Total Consecration Through the Mysteries of the Rosary

Rate this book

In his 18th century masterpiece, True Devotion to Mary, St. Louis de Montfort tells us that the quickest, easiest, and most efficacious path to Jesus is through the Blessed Virgin Mary. In her 1917 appearances at Fatima, Mary repeatedly urged us to pray the Rosary daily.

Since Mary is the best path to Jesus and since she herself insists on daily recitation of the Rosary, Fr. Ed Broom has developed this powerful do-it-yourself retreat that culminates in the total consecration to Jesus through Mary by focusing on the Mysteries of the Rosary and the Seven Sorrows of Mary – and all it takes is a few moments each day!

For years Fr. Ed Broom has transformed lives by leading this five-week retreat in Southern California. Now, for the very first time, that retreat is available in book form for those who cannot attend one of Father’s retreats in person. Here you’ll find the entire retreat program to bring you closer to Our Lady and to Our Lord: Scripture readings keyed to each Rosary decade, Fr. Broom’s succinct meditations on each Mystery, daily prayers, and wise but practical steps to help you gain the most from each meditation as you draw daily closer to your retreat’s culmination in the fifth week: your own Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary.

Why not spend the next five weeks with Fr. Broom meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary and the words of Scripture? Do so, and you’ll quickly come to appreciate as never before the beautiful prayer that is the Rosary as well as Jesus and Mary, whom you will soon know better and love more.

This book has completely transformed my relationship with our Blessed Mother. I can now confidently say I have a much stronger love for Mary, St. Joseph, and Jesus as individuals and even feel like I’ve been allowed to be adopted into the Holy Family. This consecration has made me more comfortable in speaking to Mary and has given me a better understanding of her role in Jesus’ life and my own spiritual life. This book has also given me countelss tools to use to continue developing a richer devotion to Our Lady.

This book contains a plethora of prompts for contemplation and allowed me to look at Mary and Jesus in a new light. It also caused me to approach familiar scenes from the Gospels in a new lens, which has changed the way I read and pray through Scripture.

Finally, as a result of reading this book, I was finally able to take a deeper dive into the mysteries of the rosary and the Seven Sorrows of Mary, which has helped me (at least attempt to) meditate on them on a deeper level. I found the sections on the sorrowful mysteries to be especially moving.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.

(Shoutout to Reeve for recommending and lending this book to me!)

Even apart from using this book as a preparation for Consecration, the meditations on each mystery of the rosary are magnificent and alone worth the price of the book. They are some of the best I've ever come across. I'm now using this book daily during my rosary.

How it's set up: Each day focuses on one mystery and offers multiple meditations on it, spanning several pages. So if you're not using this book as a consecration preparation, you can easily spend months (even a year) slowly going through it by choosing just one of the many thoughts that the author offers for your consideration. For every mystery, the author first quotes the scripture passage, after which follows several pages under the heading "Consider Thoughtfully." For example, the Visitation includes: Mary Starts Her Journey, Eucharistic Marian Processions (of which her trip to Elizabeth was the first! How cool is that!), Elizabeth's Baby Leaps for Joy, Mary's Canticle of Praise, and Mary's Three Months with Elizabeth, which is further broken into sections where you're invited to "help" Mary draw the water at the well, cook the meals, and even imagine yourself eating, praying, and conversing with Mary and Elizabeth. The author, a priest, guides you at each step, so it's perfect even for those not used to contemplation. The chapter ends with a short recap called, "Finally, walk with Mary daily" which contains powerful and practical helps for "living out" what you've just been thinking about. Obviously this is way too much to go through each day for each mystery of the rosary (unless you have several hours a day that you plan to pray!) but, like I said, you can easily pick a different portion of the chapter each day and have plenty of fresh material to last for months.

I don't personally say the Luminous Mysteries, as I prefer to stick with those that Our Lady herself gave to us through St. Dominic, but I use those meditations during my visits to the Blessed Sacrament, apart from the rosary. And the back of the book also has beautiful meditations on each of Our Lady's Seven Sorrows.

This is truly a treasure chest for those who love Our Blessed Mother and want to grow closer to her through the mysteries of the Rosary. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

St. Louis de Montfort was a great man who understood one of the great "secrets" of Catholicism - the quickest way to Jesus is through Mary. However, he didn't keep this truth to himself. He shared it with everyone in his numerous writings, particularly True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin. In this treatise, he gave people a 33-day program to consecrate themselves to Jesus through Mary. Recently, Sophia Institute Press published a book by Fr. Ed Broom called Total Consecration Through the Mysteries of the Rosary. Drawing from de Montfort for inspiration, Fr. Broom developed this do-it-yourself retreat that uses the Mysteries of the Rosary and the Seven Sorrows of Mary as the backbone for this consecration.

The book is divided into five weeks with one week devoted to each set of Rosary mysteries (Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious) and one week to the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Each week is further divided into days, which focus on individual mysteries/sorrows. Since there are only five mysteries in each set, you will find that some weeks, you are asked to pick a mystery already covered and re-visit it. Each day is laid out as follows:

1. Scripture passage to read slowly and prayerfully
2. Meditation on the particular mystery/sorrow
3. Bullet points of Consideration (For example, in the Visitation, you reflect on Mary Starting her Journey, Mary's Canticle of Praise, and Mary's Three Months with Elizabeth)
4. A daily walk/conversation with Mary to properly close the mediation and apply it to your daily life

For those who have never participated in a consecration, this one was put together beautifully. Each day is laid out succinctly. It is detailed enough, so you don't have to pull from other resources that you don't need to turn to another resource when going through this book, but simple enough that you won't feel overwhelmed on your journey. If you are familiar with the Rosary already and pray it every day, then you need this book and to perform this consecration.

This book was provided to me for free by Sophia Institute Press in exchange for an honest review.

I read this book as part of a group consecration to Mary leading up to the 100th anniversary of the October Fatima apparitions. While I particularly loved St. Louis de Montfort's Act of Total Consecration, which the book culminates in, I found Fr. Broom's style during the meditations to be somewhat difficult to relate with, and a bit too "new age/progressive" for my tastes. One does not need to have a touchy/feely relationship with the Holy Family in order to feel a personal connection for and desire to emulate them. Consequently, and though this might seem unfair, I felt as if the intended audience of this particular iteration of Marian consecration was intended for white, middle-to-upper-aged female members of suburban parishes.

That may be doing Fr. Broom a disservice, but after later purchasing and skimming the great St. Louis de Montfort's own "True Devotion to Mary", the source of the very Act around which Fr. Broom's book was built, I can't help but feel that this contemporary edition is almost completely superfluous. The only true value in this book lies perhaps in its accessibility to those individuals who may not have the vocabulary or doctrinal awareness to appreciate the considerably richer, more thorough, more scriptural, and undeniably more timeless approach of France's great Marian devotee.

This is a great book for a re-consecration. I still recommend de Montfort's for your initial consecration as he really gets into what it means and entails. This one is excellent for getting to know Mary on a more personal level. If you practice authentic Catholic meditation/mental/discovery/Lectio type prayer this book leans more that way. If you've had difficulty relating to Mary this book will help. I couldn't wait to do the next day.

Excellent Meditations

I have been consecrated to Jesus through Mary for several years now. I like to renew my consecration a few times each year, and have enjoyed finding different versions of the preparation to do it with. This was a very beautiful and contemplative journey for me this past 5 weeks. It is also extremely helpful for my meditations on the Rosary and the Seven Sorrow of Mary. I highly recommend it!

Another good book on consecration to Mary. This one, however, focuses on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary and is also a good way to learn more about and better meditate on the mysteries of the Rosary
