The Bottom Turtle is a wonderfully insightful examination of the interconnectedness of yoga, Christianity and the human struggle. The Bottom Turtle carefully considers both perspectives, and offers a bridge to unite the two communities without sacrificing Biblical truths.
A fellow yogi and believer lent me this book. I really enjoyed the authors personal journey from having negative preconceptions of yoga to finding freedom to practice and teach without discarding his Christian faith, or the benefits of yoga. He was open to trying yoga because of his daughter’s affinity for the practice, and dug into his concerns and he learned more, exploring the connections between the Bible and yoga scriptures.
I’ve never personally felt conflicted about my faith in Christ and my practice of yoga, because it was through yoga that I first experienced the power of the Holy Spirit, felt my mind calm down enough for meditation, and it was a tool God used to bring healing from an eating disorder and its deep roots to my body, mind, heart, soul, and relationships. But I loved this book, because many people have crossed my path that do feel conflicted, and I love this as a resource!
Perhaps a bias review, but a teacher I really adore wrote this book and I feel honored to have read his journey. I appreciate his vulnerability to reflect inward and I admire his ability to love everyone.
I found Driver's perspectives on learning about and loving those different from you to be quite insightful. While I disagree with some of the theological elements related to religion on a more personal level, this book can be useful in opening up your personal box to include many more people and be ever expansive.
