Potemkin Zırhlısı’ndan Yahudi Süss’e, Zafer Yolları’ndan Üçüncü Adam’a birçok film aracılığıyla Tarih ve sinema arasındaki dirsek temaslarına işaret eden tarihçi, günümüz toplumlarını tarihsel bağlamları içerisinde anlamamıza yardımcı oluyor...

French Historian Marc Ferro's "Cinema and History" is very useful study to read and to think about the history of relations between cinema and history in 20. Century. Cinema uses history and changes history! History is one of the sources of cinema creating, but history writing and cinema writing are different ways of writing for history. Marc Ferro writes the history of cinema in the relations with history and history writing. Marc Ferro thinks different cinema films from different nations in his book for understanding different nations' cinema producing's ways to use history and history writing.

This selection of essays by contributors focuses on pre-WWII film history with a specific emphasis on Soviet and Nazi-themed cinema. This was a critical time for history, as well as film, so I could understand the tight focus. There are a few too many chapters on Eisenstein, though he is well-analysed by the final page and I would've liked the chapters to be longer, but overall this is an interesting academic work.

Marc Ferro, a French historian (specializing in Russian history), is one of the first historians who wrote about cinema in the context of history-making. Anecdotally, Ferro died in 2021 from Covid, at the age of 96.

The book contains many gems of forgotten knowledge (or just things that I, in my vast and alarming ignorance, was not aware of, for instance, Capra's task to write the propagandist US TV series ("Why We Fight") for Roosevelt during WWII + many other facts).

I was especially delighted to find out that two of the essays in this book are discussing films I like immensely, those being Reed's "The Third Man" and Lang's "M".

I highly recommend the book to any cinephile who is also interested in history.

Tai išties nepamainomas tekstas XX a. istorijos specialistams. Iš tiesų, pačioje XX a. pradžioje, bent porą dešimtmečių anksčiau nei Europoje, japonai jau eksploatavo filmą politinei propagandai (namuose, Mandžūrijoje, Korėjoje, Taivane...).
