The Marker Chronicles

Rate this book
The first three books in the horror series featuring the adventures of a defrocked priest turned exorcist.

Meet Jimmy Holiday. He's a former priest with no shame...and a way with demons.

Sorrow's Point--Jimmy sets out to help a friend with a sick daughter, but she seems to have more than a mere illness. And Jimmy is forced to do something he swore he'd never do...

Sorrow's Edge--Jimmy would like to get his stressful, new life in order, but a strange phone call, a mysterious flask, and demonic possession quickly change his priorities...

Sorrow's Turn--Jimmy's off to the Vatican's exorcism school but soon he must teach a lesson to a reanimated corpse...

If you like Darcy Coates, Jack Ketchum, Robert R. McCammon, Willow Rose, and Joe Hill, you'll love this ghostly dark fantasy filled with enough occult and supernatural to scratch that horror itch!

Praise for the Series

"DeVor delivers a terrifying story of demonic possession and the valiant fight to save the child that will have you turning on all the lights in your house and jumping at the slightest sound."--Sci-Fi & Scary on Sorrow's Point

"[Devor's] imagination seems boundless. Sure, there's horror, demons, ghosts, and a myriad of other spooky goings-on. But I've noticed that she likes to mess with her characters. A lot. And the reader is better for it."--Steven Ramirez, author of The Girl in the Mirror on Sorrow's Edge

Review based on the first book as, while I liked it I'm not in a rush to finish the other two in the series just yet. It was good and there are elements I really want to know more about, like being a 'marker' (in Book 1 a crazy old man calls him this but by the end we still didn't have the meaning). Jimmy seems to be able to see the 'colour' of spells which I find quite interesting. I  liked his battle with being a Catholic versus believing his girlfriends witch side. I also liked his battle with doing an exorcism now he's no longer a priest and the way in which they resolved that.

The story is good and pretty creepy however far too much of it for me was a copy of the Exorcist. The book even references it when talking about exorcisms. It felt like a modern day version (using technology to record evidence). The ending seemed to happen so fast I felt like it was a blink and miss it event. Too much build up and then over so fast.

So while I enjoyed it enough to finish the series of three I didn't enjoy it enough to prioritise them over other books to read.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Real Rating 2.5

Sorrow's point:
Great read. I was slightly irritated with how Jimmy handled his anger and frustration towards Will and Tor but overall it was great! Would have given it 5 stars if not for the ending. I wasn't really satisfied with the "climax" of the story. I feel like it was much too easy and ended much too quickly

Sorrow's edge:
This book was a real disappointment to me. I was looking forward to all the creepiness and chills I got from the first book but unfortunately it was just not present in this one. There was nothing creepy at all and I just felt it was really disjointed. There were a lot more questions at the end of this one than the last. This one left me more confused than I would have liked. There was really no climax and the ending was very abrupt. Overall nothing I liked from the first novel was in this one.

Sorrow's turn:

This was such a disappointing read. I was expecting the creepiness and the mystery from the first book. Sadly I did not get any of that. This was boring. Frankly I kept having to put the book down and do other stuff because I found myself rolling my eyes the majority of the story.

The creepiness of the first book that I loved so much was nowhere to be seen in this one. The relationship and interaction between Jimmy and Tabby was plain annoying. They always got mad at each other or nearly got into arguments over the dumbest things. The plot was nearly nonexistent. Frankly it was the same exact thing over and over again. Leading up to a climax that wasn't even really a climax. So many things remained unexplained and annoyingly convenient. The only action was the last like 5 pages of the book. I'm not even exaggerating. The entire book was just Jimmy worrying. And then Tabby worrying. And then Jimmy worrying some more about Lucy. And then two sentences of action and then THE END. There was no plot. There was no character development. There was no creepiness. There was nothing in this book that is keeping me from coming back to the story.

The most annoying part of the entire thing was the constant reference to "his asshole clenching up". Really? I'm all for crass I really am. I don't mind swearing. But the insistent use of Jimmy's asshole clenching or closing or whatever was so unnecessary and annoying. Had it not been for my love of the first book, I would have DNFed this within an instant.

The "climax" of this story was possibly the worst I've ever read. It was sudden. There was no lead up. From the premise, I had expected the story to revolve around the possession. Instead, the possession lasted less than a chapter and ended before it really even started. The only reason why I am not giving this 1 star is because of the short lived possession. It was reminiscent of the first book. Otherwise I would have given this the least amount of stars possible.

Overall, not happy with how this series is turning out. The first book was great, this series had no much potential. Unfortunately, it falls short in so many ways. I'm a fan of horror and everything creepy. If you are looking for something creepy and fun to read, I would look elsewhere.

Sorrow’s Point—“Once a priest, always a priest” is a universal truth. In Jimmy Holiday’s case, it’s especially important, because a friend is pleading with him to help his young daughter, Lucy, who may be exhibiting signs of being possessed. If you enjoy supernatural stories of the demonic variety, you will love this book.

Sorrow’s Edge—The thing I love most about Danielle DeVor’s work is that she never takes the easy road. Her imagination seems boundless. Sure, there’s horror, demons, ghosts, and a myriad of other spooky goings-on. But I’ve noticed that she likes to mess with her characters. A lot. And the reader is better for it. There’s a lot you can love about Sorrow’s Edge.

Sorrow’s Turn—I read the first two books in this series, and this one is my favorite. Mainly, I love the way the author has developed the relationship between Jimmy Holiday and his old-now-new girlfriend, Tabby who, as it happens is also his exorcism buddy. Yeah, you read that right. Sorrow’s Turn is a very entertaining read.

This is a MUST have trilogy set. Learn who Jimmy is in book one and keep on going! You will be rooting for Jimmy and his horrible luck in each each without a doubt....

While you can read The Marker Chronicles books as a stand alone technically, you might as well start from the beginning in this set. My goodness Jimmy does have the worse luck for being a exorcist. Nothing seems to go right at all for him and of course The Order is always watching him and screwing him over sometimes lol.

My thoughts from book 3....Jimmy and Lucy (You'll have to read it to figure out who she is) get dragged off for some "classes" in the Vatican. Well once again Jimmy's luck is amazing even international. Absolutely nothing goes right as normal. Jimmy is a fun defrocked priest to know. Well it's probably not fun for him.... Jimmy gets all sorts of mishaps in this one. I did enjoy the pop culture references particularly the Silent Hill one as well.

His new case sure is something else for sure! Have to love a person who's dead...well kinda....A nice interesting twist for sure for his bag of tricks. I look forward to reading the next adventure poor Jimmy has. Highly recommend to those who like a little bit of horror and some fun with it. For sure worth the read and the characters in this book really made it feel complete.

Jared, I mean Jimmy is awesome in this set. I cannot wait to snag the hardbacks for my personal collection. They simply look beautiful.

I have read the first book in this series and liked it because of its eerie and spooky ambiance. I can’t resist a good horror story and the first one was an excellent horror book. When the 3-book set became available, I jumped on the chance to review the next two in the series. First off, I want to say that the books are very well-written. I feel like I’m there when I read the books, and I really connected with the characters because of that. I never lost interest in the books and didn’t feel bored. The characters really make these books, and I love the little adventures they go on. I find the character of Lucy fascinating, and I hope to see more of her in the future. Now for the slight negatives. I really got tired of Jimmy and Tabby’s mini fights in the second two books. A couple of times I couldn’t even figure out why they were angry. And, I wish we had more action and more about the Order and exorcisms; books two and three didn’t quite have the eerie feel of the first one. Other than that, I really enjoyed these books. They were a great read. Recommend! Thanks to NetGalley and City Owl Press for the e-copy of the book which I voluntarily reviewed.

The plot wasn't scary as it took on a more Humorous take on exorcism. There were terrifying incidents in the book but they were mostly overshadowed by the daily moments in their life. The pacing was alright since there were times that it was slow which gave the reader enough time to understand the information given to them and fast paced moments that stopped the boredom that would creep in at times.

The characters were distinct and some stood out for me like Doc and Lucy. Jimmy is a fun guy to be around who always tried to do his best and keep up the morale in their small family. Despite this, he had an annoying habit of bringing himself down or maybe thinking that he is an asshole. His love interest which is a witch or something was the smarts of the group and helped protect them with her magic. The only thing I didn’t like about her was her it’s all your fault attitude toward Jimmy.

I received an ARC from the publisher from Netgalley. I thank them for sending this wonderful book to me.
