These worksheets are offered as a supplement to the book Essential Tactics: Building a Foundation for Chess Skills (2017), which is available as an eBook. These 25 worksheets contain the same 150 exercises. Chess teachers who recognize the instructive value of these exercises may now make these worksheets available to their students. Purchasing Essential Tactics: The Worksheets gives you these exercises in reproducible form and permission to make copies.
I originally created these worksheets in 2012 and have used them with more than one hundred students. They have proven their worth in cultivating fundamental tactical understanding for beginning chess players. In the wake of this success, I created the book Essential Tactics to offer these exercises and the lessons they facilitate to a broader audience. The eBook Essential Tactics contains the solutions to these exercises, as well as suggestions for additional lessons that follow after the student finds the tactical solution. Many of these exercises are layered by design. Finding the tactic is the first step. Can the student finish the game when there is a decisive advantage? If the tactic leads only to equality, as is the case in a small number of exercises, can the student maintain equality against strong opposition?
