Robert Steelquist is author of a dozen works of non-fiction dealing with the natural history of the Pacific Northwest. His first work, an introduction to a book of photography by Tom and Pat Leeson (The Olympic Peninsula), was published in 1984 while a student at The Evergreen State College. Many projects followed, each widening the subject and geographic scopes of his work. Freelance writing took a hiatus during his career with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Upon retiring in 2014, he tackled The Northwest Coastal Explorer with publisher Timber Press.

In addition to writing, Robert works as a volunteer wilderness ranger for the US Forest Service, occasionally as a chef and pursues photography, cycling, backpacking and beer brewing. He lives in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains.
