The First Witch #2

The Witch's Consort

Rate this book
The second and final book in the sexy The First Witch series with an HEA ending.

My name is Freyja. I will soon cease to exist unless I acquire a cure from the fey in the twilight realm. The fey empress will kill me if she learns that I'm an abomination--a Nephilim. And I'm not just the spawn of any angel, but the monstrous angel king she beheaded.

The smoking-hot, formidable Dragonian prince, my abductor, knows nothing about my curse, or that I am his fated mate--The First Witch--he is desperately searching for. As we draw close to the fey territory, a horde of my father's former sentinels captures me. They plan to harvest my magic and drain me to resurrect the Dark Lord of All Angels--my evil grandfather.

The prince comes for me and saves me from the horrific fate, yet he still has to choose either the First Witch or me as the wolf girl. Though his passion for me burns hotter than flame, a Dragonian never strays from a decided course. He believes if he picks me, he'll lose his future mate and the great kingdom she's meant to bring him. He doesn't know the witch and the wolf girl are one and the same. If he chooses the witch instead of me--hot, fresh, eager and right in front of him--he'll lose both.

1 My mate! My female! My future queen!★'s

“I want you. Don't you know my heart beats only for you? Lightning struck me at the first sight of you.”

This is not Young Adult (for mature readers only)

*Listening Length: 6 hours and 31 minutes*

I hadn't planned on reading the second addition to The First Witch but of freaking course, it just had to end on a cliffhanger 😭 so I forced myself to read it and I dreaded every last second of it!!! UGH... These two books are just so horrible. I finished this a couple of months ago and I'm just now getting around to writing a review. I guess you can say, I'm tired of writing negative reviews already this year. It has really put me in a reading slump. Therefore this will be short and to the point.

The writing is mediocre, the world building nonexistent, and the characters were flat, boring, predictable, and uninteresting. Especially the main female character Freyja, I couldn't stand her sultry, manipulative ways. She was annoying, whiney, self-absorbed, jealous, and immature. All around one of the worst protagonist I have ever not had the pleasure of reading. All the sex scenes between Freyja and Ares is ridiculously awkward, and unbelievable. Really all the sexual innuendo's are distasteful and unnecessary.

The only things I didn't necessarily hate was the wolf pack, Merlin, Lucas the shifter, and Ventus and the other three guardians Ignis, Glacies, and Mettalum. The Guardians are alligator-like creatures with enormous wings of talons and tails that could impale a man with one strike and are covered in scales (aka Dragons).

Really everything in this duology leaves nothing to be desired and there's no reason these should have been separated into two short ass books. A big waste of my time and this will be the last book I read by Meg Xuemei X.

*I read the audiobook version and although I didn't like the book that doesn't mean Victoria Mei (the Narrator) didn't do a fantastic job with what she had to work with...because she did.

Read at your own risk of boredom and extream eye rolling.

Well...
I'm not sure what to say, I guess I just really hated this book. This series actually. I'm not one to usually write bad reviews but here it goes...
First the good stuff:
I liked Ares
I liked The Guardians
They were the best characters
The plot/story is actually quite good, and I enjoyed the world building
The thing that ruined this story for me is the main character.
Warning to you .. there are spoilers.
Freyja She is the most manipulative main character I've ever had to endure! I'm really not sure why I read both these books in the first place.
First of all, I am very confused about how a "mate" is supposed to feel. We see Ares with this adoration to his supposed mate, and he hates himself, because he is falling for another woman. He is in agony every second he is around Freyja because he wants to be faithful to someone he doesn't even know yet. Freyja knows he is her mate and she is jealous that he won’t choose her, yet he is pining for her. The thing is, is that Freyja KNOWS!!!! She even says something along the lines of "I'll never hurt my mate" ummm hello! Aren't you doing just that by making him HATE himself and putting him through this agony?!?
Not only does she continue to put him through such torment, she keeps saying to us throughout the entire story "When he choose me over her I'll tell him." Well when he professes his love over and over again and even says "f*ck the witch" and "I've never been so sure in my life" she continues to hold a grudge and tries to convince him to go to his witch. Then she says "I wouldn't be with a man who would choose another woman over me because of his ambitions" AFTER THE FACT THAT HE LET ALL HIS AMBITIONS GO!
When she finally stops acting stupid the book gets interesting. She was just so mean and Ares just let her get away with it.
I only completed this book because it was so short, and I wanted to see where the story would lead to and if she would get what was coming to her, but no she didn't. She got her happy ending even though she didn't deserve it.

You know.. for just realizing that I rate the first book just like this one.. I can't even be mad. I did this to myself really.

The Witch's Consort was a book that I dove into for a challenge. I kind of feel like a broken record lately saying I'm just reading books for challenges.. but I really am sometimes. While going the honest route, this duology was just not for me. Yes, they went by pretty quickly either by KU or audiobook but I just wasn't invested in anyone or anything.

The romance was there and I was really hoping the whole dragon prince would sway me.. but it didn't. Ugh, I love dragon shifter books too and now I'm all kinds of disappointed while writing this review. Double ugh.

In the end, it was an okay book but I just didn't care how this was going to end.

Meg Xuemei X – The Witch’s Consort

Great book!

I loved the first book and was too excited to read the second and final book in the The First Witch series. It wasn’t like any paranormal / YA fantasy book I’ve read before. I’m sure it’s not even a YA because of the intimate scenes, but no complaints here as I’ve enjoyed them myself, lol.

So this just picked up where the first book left off, with Freyja surrounded by angels who are going to bring her to the Dark Lord. Thankfully, there were no more (or maybe just less) moments where Ares is hell-bent on finding his mate. He’s now aware of the tension between the two (like hello, there were a lot of hot moments where it could get really fun and enjoyable between the two but he’s just too stubborn to let it happen) and he’s more showy when it comes to his feelings. Of course there was a part where he went berserk, but the rest of the book he remained hot and sweet.

“Don’t do this to me again,” he said in a shaky voice. “Two days ago, I had to watch the enemy’s blade cut into your skin. Today I watched you burn and could do nothing about it. I’d never felt so helpless and powerless.”

Freyja’s reasoning is something I don’t know if I enjoy or I find annoying. She was jealous of, well, herself, and Ares doesn’t even have a clue. But I like it when she finally admitted that she’s no damsel in distress (I even read that part twice, lol) and I love her interaction with Ventus and the rest of them. And that moment where she can see the imprint of what happened in the past while she and Ares were having an intimate, uhm, talk? Usually I find that weird, watching the people doing it just inches beside you doing the deed, but here I agree that it was pretty hot.

There’s action, there’s cutesy romance, and there are those hot sweaty moments. Even the secondary or supporting characters were interesting to read. This book made me want to read the other books made my Meg Xuemei X, especially what happened before Freyja was born. I loved the books and will keep on reading and recommending it to everyone.

I was wild.
I was free.
I was fire and ice, and my Dragonian was the savage who made my blood flow in a rush.

Love Transforms Lust

Freyja and Ares continue their approach-avoidance conflicting relationship. I love observing the action as Ares tries to have it all, Freyja and the First Witch and how as their relationship matures, he refines his choice. Freyja lusts for Ares as he does for her, but she wants to be loved for herself not for what others perceive she as the First Witch can do for Ares. For me, the delectability of the yin yang of their relationship is the most enjoyable part of the story. The action and universe building are frosting on the cake. It was delightful watching the yin yang of their relationship harmonize into the qi of their future. I am sorry to see Freyja and Ares ride off into the future without me, but I'll be jumping right into the Wickedest Witch.

This book wasn't as good as the first one. It was still well-written, action-packed, and I still mostly enjoyed it, but I feel like so much was left unsaid at the end. What happened with the turmoil within the king and between Ares and his brothers? That was just pushed aside? I also felt like the timing was off. Yes, I know lust rode both of them hard throughout the first book and well into this book, but with an army of Angels hell bent on capturing you, I think maybe a little nookie should be put on hold. I also can't see either of them, the survivalist in her and the military tactician in Ares, going somewhere that's secluded and essentially trapping themselves - no way out.

I hope I'm mistaken and there is a third book coming, because the ending to this book has left me with a raised eyebrow and it mentioned that readers should look forward to the book of the wicked witch next.

I'm so glad Freyja and Ares finally came to their senses. Loved when Freyja got her wings. It was so cute how Ventus had a crush on Belinda.

Hot and enjoyable read, with substantial adult content and many steamy scenes that overlap with the adventurous plot.
On the run from Angel army, Freyja, Ares and their companions are headed to Twilight realm to get a cure for Freyja´s curse that is now catching up with her prematurely. The hot´n´ cold relationship between the Dragonian prince and the First Witch explodes when Ares finally gives up the pursuit for his fated mate and chooses Freyja as his queen. But everything is far from over, since the witch´s powers are highly desired by her grandfather, the curse is screwing her up, the darkness lurking in the shadows causes trouble when least expected and the complicated mating bond with the bossy prince causes her headaches. But as truth slowly resurfaces, light and darkness should be reconciled and embraced as equals to save lives and compromises should be made to settle down in peace.
I loved the first book and looked forward to this final installment, and I wasn´t disappointed. Although I was sometimes slightly overwhelmed by the steamy scenes, since I do not usually read books with such amount of hotness, I enjoyed it very much, though maybe sometimes it is hard to comprehed the numbing impact of mating frenzy on cold thinking and logic. Freyja and Ares are both impressive characters, attractive and temperament, with their own strengths and flaws, and I enjoyed their interactions a lot. I also very much valued the world building, the blending of PNR, dystopia, sci-fi and fantasy. The imaginative descriptions were helping a lot to dive into the story as well. I only hope that some of the open ends, like the fate of Ares´ brothers and the former king of Atlantis, will be clarified in the story of the Wickedest Witch, which I am utterly looking forward to read.

Destiny at long last

The quest is ongoing and our heroine just wants to get to the Fey. Our hero has other ideas though and once he commits he won't stop until she is his. These two are in the mating dance but to stubborn to see it and to hard headed to surrender to it.

The wait is over as the final book completing Freyja and Ares’ story is here. The author takes the reader on a roller coaster ride of ups and downs and throws in Freyja’s grandfather, a highly wicked individual, to heighten the drama.
Freyja is still trying to stay alive and outrun the angel army with Ares by her side. She is looking for the cure for her curse and that takes her to the Twilight realm. During this time the tension between Freyja and Ares comes to a head. Ares decides to forgo his quest for the First Witch and everything she could give him and chooses Freyja as his queen. Can Freyja trust that Ares wants her for herself and has truly given up on his pursuit of the First Witch? Can Freyja learn to control her newly found powers or will she succumb to her grandfather?
I loved this series from the first book. The story is singed with excitement and vivid descriptions that allow the reader to dive deeply into this fantastical world. I hope that there is more to come with this storyline as some of the plot elements were left open and I would like to see what happens with regards to Atlantis and Ares’ brothers who are fighting for its control. I highly recommend reading this book!
I volunteered to read an arc for a review.

Oh yeah!

Was the plot in the sequence expected? Hmmm..yes and no :-)
Why yes? Because I was expecting that novel pace will be quick, witty and great like in first part. And of course, happy end was expected.
Why not? Why - was clear, but much clearer in second part. Where and how – that was unexpected and great. How all ended was also unexpected (it was happy, but...).
Freyja and Ares were great like in first part. Need to say that Ares totally charmed me and has proved all that needed to Freyja. Freyja was a bit to stubborn for my taste, but who am I to judge?

It is hard to writte some more and not to have spoilers, so I will just say that,I felt that some things were left unsaid; so maybe we can expect sequel in the series?
Definitly looking forward if something new is coming..and if not, both books were great, action-pact, great written and I would recomendem to readers of this gender.

I have fallen in love with Meg Xuemei X's books so far. This one is no different. I loved the writing style how well it was written. I loved the characters and how well they interacted with each other. There is drama, mystery, romance, and even some suspense in this story. It is fabulous to the point you can't put it down until you reach the end of the story. This is a must read after you read the first one. You have to find out how it ends. You won't believe how the story plays out and then you are sad because it ended. I loved Freyja spunk, strength, attitude, and funny personality. Ares is so great being blind but he is also strong and protective that makes you sigh and which you had one of him. LOL Great Series to read.

What a ending

Kindle unlimited purchase

Ares and Freyja’s story continues in this fast paced tale of love and secrets... As with book one you will love the characters and want them to have that happy ending... Every question that is brought up in book one is answered in this last book in the series... Enjoyed the sneak peek of the new series coming out called the wicked witch.. looking forward to reading it.. I recommend this series to 18 and over as the sexual content is out in left field...

I tore through this novel (good thing it's digital not paper) in a day and greatly enjoyed the second half of Frejas and Ares story. Lots of action, romance and intimate scenes. The only complaint I have is the ending has a few loose threads with Ares half brothers and the Dark Angel. Overall, an excellent read. * I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.

Yet again.. extremely cheesy. Pretty flat characters. I skim read a lot of this book. I even skipped whole chapters to try to finish this faster cause all the characters are horrible.

The male love interest borders on abusive & the female main character is freaking dumb as hell.

I think the over all idea behind this series (and all the books Meg has written set in this world) is extremely interesting. I think that's why I finished this series.

I enjoyed the book but...

So I'm going to start with stay I read both of these books in one shot so of I screw up what went where that's why.

Let's start with the opening of this novel. The first half breaks off mid scene, but instead of picking up at the same spot this one has needless back story then rephrases the scene slightly different than it began in the previous novel which was irritating.

Next the book needs editing, there are sentences where the same word is repeated bit on different tenses, like the author realized she wrote it in the wrong tense, wrote in the right one and forgot to delete the wrong one.

Additionally the mix of science fiction and fantasy was a little jarring, they're riding dragons and fighting space ships? The mythology of those different worlds meeting needed to be woven together a little better, possibly the main characters could fornicate a little less to make more room for world building. I'm not saying the sex scenes aren't well written, but the further I got in the book the more I found myself skimming them to get to the next section of plot. When they're one on top of another they become dry and tedious instead of hot and spicy.

Finally the resolution was a mix of an anticlimactic, ie the meeting with the empress, and unfinished. There's this build of Freya being wild, the palace being a guided cage, etc and none of that is really resolved. To just leave it doesn't really fit with the character Xuemei has created in Freya. The ideas were intriguing, the characters were interesting and the plot has potential, unfortunately it has more sex scenes than follow through on the plot.

This one missed

I just didn't care for this one at all. First was an issue I thought was unique to the Empress of Mysth storyline. I now fear this is this authors norm and I don't like it. We spent 90% of the story with the H/h in conflict and dragging things way out past their use by date. It really dragged and got monotonous. She spent the book jealous of herself. She also spent it lying at every turn. She was aggressive and stubborn to the point it became an unattractive fault. As a romantic formula, a plot point should not drag out more than half the book. Their should have been some real honesty and a start to building the relationship between them by the half way point and the last quarter should have been them working together to overcome obstacles. Her formula is drag things out so far it's unpleasant and unbelievable, they come together and then the book ends. We don't get to see any of what things are like for them where they end up. It's anticlimactic. A good chapter long prologue in these stories would also help some, but that dragging a single ridiculous plot out so long really needs work. Now my biggest hate in this story was what the Oracle revealed at the end. Wow, talk about the most depressing drivel ever. It took something important away from the story. Something that is necessary for slavery good romance, mystery, dystopian, thriller story... HOPE. We gonna t an HEA that was in no way an HEA. I can't say not to read it, as it is part of this universe and is probably will be a necessary part of the story, but as much as I hate to say it, don't be surprised if you are disappointed by it. I was, terribly.

Promising storyline with very poor execution

I usually try to be positive with ratings, but giving this a 2 is already a stretch for me. I'm not really sure why I read this book. Although the storyline was promising and some of the characters such as Ares and the Dragonians were good, the main lead female was ridiculous.
90% if this book is her being jealous of herself and hurting the person who is meant to be her mate, yes they mate but then the book seems to become more about the sex scenes then the actual plot and characters. Theres no real depth or development for the characters and the ending is so rushed that it seems forced.
I finished it because it was in the romance package, but I don't intend to read anything else from this author as I truly detested the main character.

Meh

This was just poorly written. I don’t know why I continued on. Then the book abruptly ended without meeting the father in law and discussing the homecoming. So much dragging on and back and forth. The characters had such little depth.... this isn’t my first meg x book that I’ve read but it’ll be my last. She needs way more work and growth on her writing style and character development. Thank god this was free

I enjoyed this story because I wanted to know the conclusion of Freya and Ares...but Freya was hardcore annoying. I understand the not trusting people to an extent, but lord have mercy. I honestly think things should have progressed further along that line in the first book, and the second book should have taken on a different plot line. Either way, it was enjoyable enough to make me look past the main character's flaws and keep me wanting to know how it would end up!

I preferred the concept of this story to the execution. This is a book in need of a proof reader, the amount of missing or wrong words completely detracts from the story to the extent that I walked away three quarters of the way through. The stars are for the concept and the world building.

Not to bad. Ares personality did a complete 180 but not really in a good way. He was just never a very likable character. Freyja accepts herself and it ends in a HEA.

Interesting story fell flat

The first book, I liked it enough to continue on. It was unique in some aspects and I wondered what would happen.

But this book made me hate both of the main characters. And poor Lucas (the shifter boy) got stringed along to be some half ass love triangle sacrifice.

The main character keeps telling her how much women he could get and how he is the man all women want - - - and she keeps coming back for more and tell lie after lie after lie. Plus towards the end, she became some unstoppable force - too overpowered compared to those around her.

Spoilers:

Also it is not a HEA but a HFN because she is immortal and he will only live for a thousand years. (She even was told how miserable she will be by the Oracle once she dies).

I almost didn't finish the book after this part:

"Such a hot, tight pussy. The best I've ever had. The only one I'll have for now on. Your pussy will always be there for me to fuck whenever I want and however I want."

He says this to her during their claiming / mating time after forcing her by bringing her close to climax to accept his proposal. How is that romantic? It's posessive and controlling - and talking about how lucky she is to have him cause he's been with other women multiple times is a flap in the face (especially during sex)

Then later - he tells her that she has to move in with him and basically be put into some freaking cage..... After she just saved everyone by herself!

This book kinda left on a cliffhanger. It felt unfinished. Okay we are going to accept some sketchy Oracle - and just because she says they will rule everything, etc. - doesn't mean that you can leave out what happens when they arrive at the castle. His father is dying and his two half brothers are trying to kill him. Plus I highly doubt people are going to accept him (or her) with open arms. The fact that author said their story was over (even though there are more stories within the same universe) makes me feel cheated. Their story could easily be a trilogy but instead we are TOLD everything is going to be okay (other than she will outlive him) instead of living it (or at least the beginnings of it). They are only officially together for the last few chapters in out of two books. Pretty lame to me especially after how she stringed him along.

This is a review for both book 1 & 2. I liked book 1 better than book 2, enough to go on to book 2 -in spite of all the hiccups. After book 2, I wish I hadn't wasted my time on either book, as it left me frustrated with the whole thing. So in the end I'm not sure how to rate the books. The flow was stop & go, some parts seemed like they took forever to get thru, while others sped along & held my attention. I was a bit confused by the wording, sometimes it was written in an old English style, sometimes it was modern including slang. Then there's the references to spaceships, ray guns and technology, genetic modification, angels & fey. Because of this, I wasn't sure of the time frame this was to be set in, is it future apocalyptic or ancient past (it can't be both!)? These inconsistencies pulled me out of the story -a lot! Then there's the world building, I thought it was minimalistic at best, I never really had a grasp on so much of the stuff going on, or it came so late in the books as to be irritating to wait so long to give the info to the reader. Also, so are the angels actual angels or are they aliens, I couldn't decide? How did the civilizations get to the point to have genetic modified beings, & why was Freyja considered the "one witch" -since I didn't see anything witchy about her in either book? As to the main characters, they were very flat, & I really didn't know them any better at the end of the story. I just didn't like either of them, I liked some of the secondary characters more than the main characters. Freyja was just to manipulative and selfish -all the way to the end. I couldn't get behind the manipulations. Ares was just too over the top, almost bipolar in his behavior, & misogynist, for my tastes. He thought he was right all the time & far superior to anyone else out there, let alone a woman he holds captive. He was so single minded over the Oracle's specification to find the one witch, it was annoying. The ending felt rushed and I didn't appreciate the HEA for the couple being taken away by the Oracle. That was just unnecessary for wrapping up the story. I really wish I could get my time back.

Is this great literature? No. Was it still an entertaining read? Yes. The storyline was interesting (and since I’ve been binging this author, I appreciated that she didn’t seem to recycle anything in this one like some others). The fmc didn’t irritate me like some of her others do, though you still get the the requisite randomly and out of nowhere overwhelming mating urges and throbbing vaginas and porn star sex scenes 🫣😆

*** The first and second book have different narrators for some reason, which is mildly annoying but would be whatever IF they didn’t pronounce the main character’s name differently. I had to go back and listen to the first book to make sure because I was like WTF?!***

I can’t even explain why I’m enjoying this author (some books are definitely waaaaay better than others) , but I’m glad I’m not done binging yet 😉

This was my first book by Meg Xuemei X. This is the second book in The First Witch duet, a Paranormal Romance. I haven't read the first book in the Series. The story is well written, entertaining and captivating. The main characters Freyja and Ares are great together, and they share a strong chemistry. The secondary characters are also interesting. The storyline is suspenseful, filled with mystery and romance. The world building is fantastic. I loved the ending. The narration was wonderful. Victoria Mei has a beautiful voice that fits perfectly with this story. I received this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
