I’ve been wanting to read a book in this series since it debuted and I was not disappointed! Great low key mystery perfect for kids ready to try longer stories and early chapter books. I have loved the Branches line since it debuted and this series is a terrific addition. Smart characters, reporting skills, and a great story.

I did not like this book because I do not like fires. I also do not like this book because I did not the part when Hilde went across caution tape. I enjoyed this book because I liked the part when Hilde found out that some hot owl-shaped lights and three nests in a gutter made the fire.

{My thoughts} – Hilde and her sister Izzy pick up right where they’d left off in the previous book. They’d heard fire sirens and decided to follow them. The fire was an antique store that was well known in their area. The building was a loss and they were trying to figure out what started the fire.

The girls did some investigating and took many pictures. However, it wasn’t until they were looking at older pictures of the store, that they were able to figure out just what had caused the fire.

A lot of stuff takes place in case of an emergency such as a fire like is described within the pages of this book. I enjoyed reading this book and the lessons in which it teaches children. It shows children that you can make a difference while being safe at the same time. It also shows children that good investigating will lead you to the right answer and that it isn’t safe to assume you know what happened.

I think this is a great book and series for any child that is a fan of mystery. It’s also a great book and series for any child that likes to write stories about things going on in their lives.

Reminiscent of Encyclopedia Brown series of my childhood, but more friendly. My son and I read this together and he loved it. He was totally engrossed in the format which is partially illustrated and shows various media formats: newspaper article, photography, website, etc. It's great for introducing multi-media in print as well as mystery stories. We collected clues, learned about journalism, and really enjoyed this one as a read-together.

Like most of the Branches line, this is written in a straightforward manner with attractive illustrations. Readers try to solve a mystery and in the end see how a newspaper article is formatted.

When Nina's Antique Store is destroyed by fire, and Mrs. Brown thinks her candles are to blame for the incident, it's up to Hilde to use her reporting skills to find the real clues to solve this mystery, and absolve Mrs. Brown of her quilt.
