In the biography of Sidney Lanier there is little radically new to be learned though the author has located a number of previously unpublished letters and neglected sources of information. The emphasis is primarily one of interpreting what is known, of looking freshly at long-accepted opinions. This study is particularly strong in its detailed critical examination of the less well-known works of Lanier.
