The end of the main series: Under threat of destruction or servitude to the Empire, facing the fleets of the Ragnar, Finth, and Thack Delos, and the larger force of the Thandol, Mirikami prepares the Federation for all-out war. The Planetary Union, allied with the Federation, receives a squadron of new technology Federation Scouts, equipped with gravity controlled weapons. They conduct a preemptive strike on a Thandol base. The Emperor blames it on the Federation, unaware of the PU’s existence, and orders simultaneous attacks. Mirikami sends teams of Federation Scouts to the Security forces, to subvert them. They carry diplomat-soldiers, with tough messages. The messages are not well received, and the Kobani must improvise, in their typically hostile manner. Unexpectedly, a mystery silver alien, The Silha, demands a meeting with Mirikami and the Olt’kitapi. It seems there are restrictions for species once they achieve advanced gravity control. The Kobani are told of limits they must obey, or else. To a god-like elevated species, survival of primitives is not their concern, so long as they don’t use gravity technology in forbidden ways. After Security force fleets attack Federation and PU worlds, Mirikami leads a combined fleet against the Thandol Capitol world. He uses a new tactic that bypasses the weapons limits of The Silha. Vastly outnumbered, he faces the Thandol fleet with a great defense.
I was born in 1942, so I'm an autumn rather than a spring chicken. I live outside of Tampa, Florida with my fabulous wife Anita, and one son in college, Montana. I have three older boys, Mark, Gary, and Anthony, all of whom have married and presented us with terrific grandchildren.
My education gravitated to science, starting out as a physics major and my depression era folks told me I'd never make a living as a theoretical physicist (probably right, and Cosmology wasn't a career field then), so I moved to Electronics Engineering. I devoted (was drafted into) service for the US Army, and caring not a whit for my electronics background, they offered this draftee a job as an Air Traffic Controller. Cool new career field. Retired, I now work as a consultant for the FAA, supporting software I helped create.
I decided to try my hand at writing what I loved to read, Science Fiction. The Koban Series has established my unusually successful entry into SciFi as an indie author. 11 books at last count, and at least two more in my mind.
Two in a row: another excellent wrapping up of an excellent series (see my review just previous to this of the Bobiverse series). There are a few SF series that I consider my favorites and the Koban series is one of them and one that I will recommend when asked for suggestions for great reads.
In this final book in the series, the Kobani/Federation do the lion's share of the fighting to discourage and protect against attacks from the Thandol and their three subservient enforcer races. Greatly outnumbered, but in possession of superior tech, they must devise a divide-and-deter strategy to prevent the Thandol empire from going on the offensive against the Federation and the Planetary Union. Good fights, humor, good guys, bad guys, and clever plot twists made this a fun and rewarding read.
Thank you Mr. Bennett for an excellent series. I'll look forward to other books in the Kobaniverse and anything else you may write!
Book number 7 completes the Koban Saga, at least for now. I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey from the first book until this one . My take from these books is that no matter how much humanity may improve and no matter what our intentions are, there's always someone something willing to challenge our sense of well-being. Khan Nomingseng, of "Star Trek" was partially right that technology along doesn't produce a better human. As th Kobani showed, it takes both, and even that sometimes isn't enough. As Capt. Kirk said after his encounter with the Organians, "The game was rigged from the beginning, we just didn't no it." I look forward to some more stand alone Koban novels. Nuff said!!!!
There's few things worse than getting what you wanted. I wanted another amazing, thrilling book, but it is unfortunately the end. I absolutely adores this series and everything was wrapped up in a satisfying ending. I look forward to more standalone books... And perhaps another book after 18,000 years have passed :)
The entire Koban series was/is great. I went back and reread the books in preparation for When Empires Collide. It was great. The characters are well done - in fact, they're fabulous. This may be the best "other world" series of back I've read! I look forward to more of Mr. Bennett's books. Koban has placed a high bar Mr. Bennett!
Sad to see the series end but also looking forward to future stand alone novels in the Koban universe. I starts this series looking for something different and definitely found it.
This wasn't the most exciting book of the series, but it wasn't too bad either.
This seems to end the main series, though the author seemed to be saying there'd be minor additions later on. Also has a new series coming out semi-soon.
a well done finish to the Koban series. Although it leaves room for more stories about the Koban and other species, it was a satisfying conclusion to the series.
A good end to the series that leaves a taste for more. The action makes sense and it isn't super accelerated like with so many authors those days that want to fit an impossible timeline in one book. Recommended
This is a great conclusion to the series. To any possible critics who think the series may have ended a little early, I think it makes sense. War sometimes takes a long time, but it sometimes ends abruptly due to certain advances in technology or strategy.
The author does a good job in creating alien species and their culture, as well as describing new technology and developments. Further, the author brings us a whole new level of imagination greater than or equal to than the likes of Stargate. The different levels of technology different species have, as well as evolution and extinction, create an interesting dialogue about the possibilities of space travel and alien species we might encounter in our future.
I loved this series! Just went back and re-read the last 3 books over the last 5 days. It was an enjoyable marathon of listening to the Audible versions. The narrator is awesome. I'm going to miss the Kobani and their adventures.
Hufff... finally finished it. First I have to say that I have loved this series of books since the first one, it has been fun watching the Kobani and humanity face such a dangerous foe, grow and innovate to managed to vanquish them. Now a sad personal incovinience for me is the over explanation in the dialogue, this has not started in only this book really, but I took so long because it was a struggle to pass through such a lengthy discussion in explaining things. And it wasn't even a back and for thing it was a single person with an extremely large need to talk. One had to wonder a few times if they just love hearing themselves talk. Besides I feel like the Kobani have disregarded to mutch caution in regard to intelligence, they find an extrange need to showcase and explain how strong, fast and resilient they are to new enemy from wich they barely know something and have no idea what they could do with such an info. It has already proved deadly in one of the short novella to the sons of Dillon and Thad, in wich one is almost killed because the normal humans figured how to ambush them using the mindtap to their advantage. Outside of those two thing this book was as good as the others for me.
While I greatly enjoyed this entire series I had many, many instances of errors and mistakes that were not caught in the editing process. Therefore I wasn't able to sink into the story and really enjoy it. However I would still recommend this entire series to others. Just with the warning that the editing isn't as good in this book as it was in earlier books.
