Award-winning author Jillian Hunter weaves another enthralling tale in which the path down the aisle is paved with startling twists of fate . . . and temptation.
Lord Heath Boscastle's attraction for Julia Hepworth begins with a bang. She shoots him at a hunting party--accidentally, of course. Though the shot grazes his shoulder, her beauty pierces his heart. Sparks fly soon after when they find themselves dangerously close to a compromising position. Too inexperienced to understand such overwhelming emotions, Heath and Julia part ways.
Now, years later, Heath is a high-ranking intelligence officer, asked to protect his commander's fiancée, Julia, while he chases down an elusive spy. Heath quickly regrets his promise when he meets Julia again--and their mutual desire still burns hotter than ever. Of course he will protect her.
There is danger in the air. And Heath would never think of betraying his friend, until he learns that Julia herself has been betrayed. Suddenly seduction Boscastle style is the name of the game. Yet Julia has a trick or two up her own sleeve--and is determined to be a player, and not a mere pawn, in his wicked game.
Jillian Hunter is the bestselling author of over twenty historical romances. She lives with her husband, three daughters, a pug and a poodle in Southern California. She loves anyone who can make her laugh, which means she is in love with Mike Myers and Tyler Perry.
No pudo evitarlo.”
This was another enjoyable, funny, light hearted read by Jillian Hunter. Heath and Julia begin the book with an accidental shooting. Heath's injury bring them together and they are almost compromised. Heath then leaves to go to war and Julia marries another man and lives in India for three years.
The book picks up upon Julia's return to England, where she becomes betrothed to Heath's friend and commander. Heath is asked to guard and protect Julia while her fiance goes to France to chase down a nemesis.
I thought this book would really bother me, with Heath put in a position of protecting Julia, where I was assuming he would betray his commander and friend (Julia's betrothed) because, well, he is the hero of the book. However, I thought it was pretty well done, giving you some scenes where you knew the marriage was not going to work out. Still, just not my favorite set up there.
The book was a little repetitive. Nothing that really drew me in and made me not want to stop reading it. The character development was a bit better than book 2, but I think book 2 was steamier. But still some quite funny scenes. I enjoy Hunter's humor. The next book is The Wicked Games of a Gentleman, Drake Boscastle's story. I actually read this one last summer but didn't write a review and can't remember much about it so I'm going to reread :)
Again, a fun story. I have really become quite attached to the Boscastles and all their drama and hijinks and commitment to loyalty (and driving each other crazy). This story had quite the meet cute and then their reconnect just takes off from there. They are two strong characters who complement each other well. Now, I was concerned with the fiancee part, but Hunter set it up that it wasn't really a huge secret or problem (at least for me). Overall a good mystery and fun romance, though some of their reflections on the past and dithering over the future did get a little bit repetitive.
This was a pretty good historical romance, a story of reunited lovers, with plenty of steamy romance. However, I never felt that zing, that sense of connection with the characters and that compulsion to keep reading. I felt like it was fine to pick this book up when I had a free moment, and to put it down when I had more important things to do.
I'm not a big fan of lovers reunited stories, but I liked that Heath and Julia are older and wiser, and have lived their lives, and know very well that what they have together is very good and it's worth committing to this time around.
There were some fun moments, especially with the salacious sketch of Heath that falls into the wrong hands. I really liked when Heath realized that he wasn't going to let Julia get away from him this time, no matter what. I love a hero in pursuit! I wasn't that into the whole "Boscastle Antics" aspect of the story. It reminds me unfavorably of how there is a tendency to wink and nod at a family in a series, and to draw readership for the later stories by reminding the reader of how crazy the family is. Of course, I love series books. No question. I just think that the author's job is to make a storyline so compelling that we can't help but race for the next book. I'm not that intrigued with the other Boscastle rogues at this point. I'll keep reading because I like this author a lot. But it's not an urgency for me right now.
This is a solid B read for me. A nice past-time with plenty of sexual tension between Julia and Heath that I'm sure many readers will really enjoy.
Me gustó mucho.
This book was pretty good. I liked the characters. There was just too much time spend on internal thoughts, REPETITIVE internal thoughts, eg., regrets about what had happened in the past, desire for the other in the present, concern about not being able to have the relationship work out. I got so tired of hearing these same thoughts described again and again and again and....
Heath has been my favorite in the first two books, so I hope this one is the best yet. Unfortunately not. In fact, my least favorite. The actual "plot" (what little there is of it) m-i-g-h-t fill 5 pages. The rest basically is sex. Heath deserved better.
It was a good regency, no doubts about it. But then, Heath deserved better; more sparkles, more friction, more effort in overcoming all the obstacles that led to his wedding night. At least his love, Julia, passed my test.
Enjoyable, if slow paced, addition to the series 3 stars
Lord Heath Boscastle has never forgotten Julia Hepworth - possibly because the first time they met, she shot him in the shoulder! While tending his wounds, the pair enjoy a very nearly compromising afternoon. Too young to understand the overwhelming passions, the pair part.
Years later Heath, now a decorated war hero, is asked to protect Julia by his former army commander - who is now her fiancé - while a dangerous French spy is captured. Heath soon regrets his decision as the passion that engulfed the pair so many years ago is burning brighter than ever before. And when Julia's fiancé's indiscretions come to light, Heath decides it's time to finish what they started all those years ago.
I did enjoy this book but there were a few problems with it that stopped me from giving it more than 3 stars.
Both Heath and Julia are excellently well-rounded characters that play well off each other and never fall into the trap of having ridiculous misunderstandings or random attacks of stupidity. There is little in the way of sensuality until near the end of the book when it comes out in full force as if to make up for the beginning of the book. That's not really a complaint though!
My main problem with the book was that despite the hint of danger and action, it really never materialised and as a result, the book felt quite slow paced. The French spy was mentioned quite a lot and we are supposed to believe that it is a terrible danger yet I personally felt the conclusion of this part of the story terribly anticlimactic.
Regardless of this, the story is still engaging and you want to keep turning the pages to find out what happens to Heath and Julia. It's also always fun to see the large cast of Boscastle siblings popping up throughout the book. While not being her best book, this is still a fairly enjoyable and entertaining read. 3 stars.
heath my favorite of the brothers thus far is the discreet bocastle and intrepid spy an almost was remains with him and the almost for six years, which i do understand. the conversations revealing the miscommunications are poignant and the desires have never been forgotten or resolved. until now. the issues that were unresolved were brentwood removing the bracelet at the opera for the villain, that bocastle did not make the connection instantly was irritating. also just too much erotica, sex stamped on page after page like photocopying. what saved it was that heath, the discreet rogue had never found another woman like julia. julia had never forgotten heath and never imagined they would meet again. so this saved the story. would have enjoyed less sex and more confrontation with Russell who turned out to quite the blackguard, and the villain was hardly present. i dislike books that end in sex scenes. an epilogue would have been satisfying, or at least a small chapter following the wedding knight. was disappointed and found the first two titles more entertaining, especially as Heath was my favorite. am content they both found content.
Read 2019. Romantic. Little erotica. Historical. New author for 2019. As I am writing the review I have read books 1, 2, 3, & 4 and all have been fast reads. Great books.
Read in Order: YES, you need to read in order. Since all of the characters continue in all of the books since it is about the Boscastle family and all the ins and outs of their lives.
Not my favorite Boscastle book but sill nice. I enjoyed the scenes and actually enjoyed the villain. I wish there had been more of a confrontation with Russell but whatever.
Honestly this book reads like the ridiculous ramblings of a teenager. The plot is stupid, the characters aren’t developed and the dialogue is idiotic. Pass.
Kindle Purchase - Good fun, especially the caricature, and a feisty, mature and experienced Heroine, who shoots the Hero when they first meet. Again the dominant male trope did jar a bit.
Hunter crafts an engaging tale of longing and seduction with “The Wedding Night of an English Rogue.” Heath Boscastle, a dedicated officer in the English Army, is given the daunting task of protecting the “wicked” Lady Whitby. He’s harbored deep feelings for her since the moment they met – six years ago. Heath’s story of reuniting with a past love is one that will touch the reader’s heart and keep them turning the page.
The novel begins with Heath, a handsome rogue of a Boscastle, talking to his superior officer, Colonel Russell Althorne. Althorne is going to France to chase down a notorious, spy, Auclair, and asks Heath if he’ll act as his fiancée’s protector until he returns. Heath is stunned to find out the woman is Lady Julia Hepworth Whitby, a lady whom he met six years ago, and who he had a romantic encounter with. Heath tries to refuse, thinking Julia has hardened her heart to him, but Russell insists. Reluctantly, Heath agrees.
The sparks fly between Heath and Julia as soon as they are reacquainted. Both recall their previous liaison six years ago and how their passion brought them to the brink of lovemaking, but they pulled back before it could go further. Both harbored thoughts of finding each other again.
As Heath settles into his role as Julia’s protector, secrets start to pop out. Heath learns that Julia’s fiancé, Russell, keeps mistresses and one is pregnant with his child. Grayson, Heath’s brother, confirms it. It’s the tipping factor Heath needs to make a play for Julia himself. Mysterious things are also happening at Julia’s estate where she stays with her Aunt Hermia. Gloves are misplaced. Julia’s sapphire bracelet goes missing. Baron Brentford takes and interest in Julia that seems forced until Heath scares him away. These strange happenings unnerve Heath, and he increases his diligence in guarding Julia.
After a serious conversation between Heath and Julia were they discuss what their past encounter meant to them, Heath turns up the heat. Julia wages a war between her heart and her mind until her aunt’s gentleman friend, Odham, tells her about her cheating finace. Julia follows her heart and gives it to Heath. They consummate their passion at the Boscastle estate in the country.
When Heath and Julia return to London, odd things continue to happen. A scandalous sketch Julia made of Heath finds its way into the papers. Too late, Heath realizes Auclair has been in London all along. Auclair takes Julia hostage, and Heath races to her rescue.
This is the third of the Boscastle romance series, and I’ve enjoyed all of the stories immensely. The novel is fast paced, and dives the reader into the action from the start. Heath and Julia are interesting characters. Both of them are well developed and their back story is compelling. By the time they consummate their passion, it isn’t just sex for them – it’s love.
The supporting cast is also engaging as bits and pieces of them are reveal,ed throughout the novel. The plot is credible with no holes.
Hunter’s love scenes are passionate and tasteful. The scene where Heath and Julia consummate their passion is more than a sex scene, it’s a love scene. I especially liked an endearing scene where Heath and Julia flirt with each other after they’ve made love with furtive glances while Aunt Hermia is in the room. Heath’s seduction of Julia in the ivy cave is another powerful love scene. “The Wedding Night of an English Rogue” is a delicious romantic escape that is hard to put down.
The Wedding Night of an English Rogue is a fun read but that didn’t surprise me. How could it be anything else when the heroine shoots the hero in the first chapter?
Book three of the series is fast-paced with many twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages. Maybe it’s just me but I did expect more heat between the hero/heroine than what was served up. I didn’t feel a connection to the hero until well into the book and I think it hampered the sizzle. With that said, The Wedding Night of an English Rogue is a fun (and funny) read with a handful of scenes that left me with a grin on my face. With each book I’m enjoying this series more and more. Stay tuned! ~ Cerise, www.ireadromance.com
Julia and Heath make quite a nice couple. The mystery/thriller aspect of this book was also quite nice.
One carping note, scars do not disappear and reappear when needed. Heath's scars (from being tortured) are on his chest and would be readily visible when his shirt is off. In scene #1, when Julia asks him to take off his shirt to have a scratch cleaned, she makes no mention of the scars. In scene #2, when Heath is being treated for a head wound - and they get his shirt off, Julia comments on the scars. Plothole.
I was so excited for Heath’s story after the first 2 cooks. Julia was such a letdown. She was unrealistically wishy-washy re: her feelings, decisions, and bordering on TSTL. And for a spy, Heath is too easily distracted by his h; even during imminent danger. By the end of the book, I didn’t really care what happened to either one of them.
The author always seemed to put much less thought into this book - overused and absurd plot devices, TSTL, and in general, less focus on the subplot than it demanded. Bummer.
4.5 rounding up...This has been my favorite of the 3 Boscastle romances that I have read. The plot started off with a bang, and continued to capture my interest. Heath was just the right combination of jaded yet romantic and Julia was very endearing. The dialogue is fun and also poignant. The family dynamics are very modern, I know I'm being overly generous in my rating but I'm coming to really enjoy and look forward to what happens next with this family.
her plots are often weak but this was the worst! heres just one example--a gentleman with no connection spends the night in the house of a semi-scandalous woman--a widow infact! with no harm to her reputation? in addition to the author going on and on about how each character felt and how amazing they were, blah blah blah.
hunters characters are interesting and dynamic but she trapsn bore everyone silly. them in such stupid plots that they have nothing better to do beyond bore everyone silly.
I might not have enjoyed this book as much as I wanted to--too high of an expectation?--but I still remain a fan of JH and look forward to finding the second book in this trilogy. Or any of her other books.
This is the one that inspired me to get the rest of Hunter's stuff from the library. An interesting, pretty well characterized "one that got away" romance (not my usual sub-genre)
