The hero builds up heroine's trust by brutally withholding affection and tenderness when she feels most vulnerable, dangling an OW to make her jealous, giving her ultimatums that he will leave her, then that he will throw her out. Real, stable guy.
The heroine is a tiny brown mouse that quivers, squeaks, and runs for cover only to end up in mouse traps again and again.
Very flat, one-dimensional, uninteresting characters in an inconsistent and meandering plot. Not PW's best imho.

"Out Of Nowhere" is the story of Emma and Jake.
So continues my crappy book streak..
Lets introduce our characters.
The heroine: Emma
-Damsel in uber distress who is an orphan, wants love, ends up having an almost affair with a married man+ is getting lascivious looks from her shitty room-mate's BF after being injured in a life altering accident- runs away to her old uncle's moor only to encounter a SUPER temperamental artist, become a doormat by agreeing to pose, fall for his rude disposition and then have dramatic tantrums due to lack of communication.
The hero: Jake
Egotistical, millionaire, elusive artist who is not just judgmental, but also loves calling the disabled heroine "lame" and enjoys it because she will be dependent on him. Taunts her with OW and continually reminds her of his experienced past. Is usually lost in his work and barely pays attention to the heroine, unless there's a tent in his pants.
Doormat heroine, PMSing hero, pathetic love with issue filled HEA.
Meh and no.
Safe

Not bad but not one of PW's best either. One of her wounded waif heroines (past psychological trauma, meet current physical trauma with a side of disillusion! How d'ya do!) meets one of her uber-possessive heroes with a surly artistic temperament and falls in instalove (and he's not far behind). I love PW's "capture/captivate-the-heroine" tales but this one relies a bit too much on the hero saving the heroine from the inner darkness that has haunted and stunted her. He's not tender about it, but the treatment is pretty effective--until PW decides to add complications in the shape of his pernicious ex-wife, whose OW wiles (for spite?) derail the MCs budding love. Kind of a contrived complication.
Didn't have the impact of some of PW's better tales but her domineering artist hero was a slight change from her usual domineering tycoon heroes. The heroine never really resonated with me--she was a little too broken and passive without the usual daffy fey charm that PW's heroines usually have. All-in-all, not bad, but not memorable.

She wasn't welcome!Emma Shaw had escaped an uncomfortable situation by fleeing to Credlestone Hall, her uncle's isolated home in Dartmoor. But when she arrived late one foggy night, her uncle wasn't there. Another man was. A man named Jake Garrani.Jake, it turned out, was a friend of her uncle's and a well-known artist. He was living at the house because he needed a quiet place to work, and he didn't want Emma "hanging around," disrupting his concentration. If she stayed, she'd have to pose for him....It was the last thing the shy and emotionally battered Emma wanted to do. But she refused to be scared off by this ... this tyrant. And she refused to give in to the attraction that sprang up between them. An unwanted attraction -- no matter how exciting, how compelling, it might feel!

This was a promising scenario, tempestuous artist plus virginal, lame waif, but it was a bit overwrought. The H, Jake Garrani was slightly too heavy on the artistic temperament and cruelty and the h, Emma was a bundle of neuroses. It began on Dartmoor, detoured to boho London then headed to luxurious Florence. There was a lot to like, if you're into the cruel, possessive types but she was just a little too feeble. That said, I'm very fond of PW.

Let's start with - interesting book cover
A very sweet story.
The h was in a bad place after being hit by a car, finding out her boyfriend was a married man and her roommate's boyfriend was a lecher. To escape from all that drama she ran to her uncle's house only to find her uncle gone and the H borrowing the house.
The H is a unfriendly, temperamental artist with a sharp tongue. He makes the h cry more times than I can count. He demands that she leave and then decides that she can stay if she poses for him. Noting rude, just posing.
Their relationship is like a rollercoaster ride thanks to the H, but under his care, the h flourishes. She has fears from childhood that are impacting her as a woman. The H helps her overcome them. They are happy until a surprise OW came on scene and ruined their happiness.
I loved the H even though he was harsh and cold. He was being cruel to be kind and it helped the h come out of her shell and blossom. This was a much better read that I expected. I absolutely enjoyed it.

Emma had to leave the flat she lived in with another girl because she didn't trust the girl's boyfriend and because of her own old friend's infidelity. Unfortunately, because an accident left her lame, she couldn't go far away, and the only place she could go to was her uncle's isolated house. She didn't bargain for her uncles' absence nor him lending his house to an artist called Jake Garrani whom she completely mistrusted and feared. She had no where to go and had to depend - albeit unwillingly - on Jake's generosity. Gradually, she comes to terms with her fears and love to Jake.
The story is nothing new yet sweet, logical and smooth. Feelings and reactions are wonderfully expressed and the characters are well-developed. Love it! A recommended read.

The lead male is very domineering and the lead female is a pushover, still this book had enough angst to keep me going.

She is traumatized by witnessing a break in and rape as a child. Also: Her mother’s suicide because of that rape. Her father’s paranoia.
Then when she finally starts to explore her sexuality, the dude is married. No wonder that car ran her over.
This is the baggage the heroine brings to the relationship. Hero is a famous artist with an evil ex and a flair for melodrama and speaking in half-truths.
Thankfully the heroine is cured of her PTSD by posing for the hero. Art therapy works.
Not a bad story, but triggers abound and the handling of rape is offensive.
