Returning home to a house full of bad memories only reinforces Dr. Jordan Kalusky’s desire to never get attached. But then the mysterious super-spy Carys Mitchell comes through the door of her ICU.
A woman of more questions than answers, Carys has long put her country ahead of her heart. She won’t make the mistake of falling in love. Last time cost her a friend. What would it cost this time? When Carys is forced into retirement, she smells a rat and starts delving into the case surrounding her injury - one that draws Jordan in, deeper and deeper.
When Carys rescues Jordan from an assassin, she realizes their lives are twined together whether she wanted them to be or not. When the temptation becomes impossible to resist, Carys has to figure out whether she can protect her heart - or whether she wants to risk opening up to Jordan for the first time.
Can they overcome the barriers between them? Or will fate break them apart and destroy their happy ending?
Coming off of reading Poker Face, which is newer than this one I realized she's following a sort of template that is turning out to be a bit predictable. Wind up with some romance, crap hits the fan, big reveal at the end. Maybe if I hadn't read them back to back I wouldn't have noticed. Shrug. Was ok. Not bad by any stretch though.
3.5 rounded to 4. This book is a slow read until about the 70% mark. At that point is gets markedly more suspenseful and that is when I started reading in earnest. The ending is rather abrupt like the author decided the book should end at this many pages. It felt really rushed to me. I loved another of Noelle's books so I'm sure I'll check out the next.
This was pretty cute, but the premise made it a little harder to get into than the other books I have read by this author. I definitely preferred her other books, but this was still enjoyable
Seriously, this was frightening. I got off the phone with her, started reading this and immediately suffered PTSD from growing up with her. It's like each year she gets worse! Jordan's mom was exactly my own, and I cringed every time Jordan remembered her. Exact same words, and manipulative tactics. According to my mom, if it isn't physical then it can't be counted as abuse. Bravo!
Other than that very disturbing trip, I quite enjoyed this book. The romance didn't feel rushed, and the scenarios were quite interesting. Some questions still remain for me, though. Also, some of the information seemed redundant. It's like two people were there for conversation, but one (or both) had no recollection of the conversation ever happening and so we revisited that information again as if brand new.
I liked the intimacy between the leads and Carys' unyielding determination to protect Jordan. The little ways she gave her reassurance were truly heartwarming. I definitely related to Jordan's struggles and enjoyed how human she was.
Edit: Also, I wanted a Scooby-Doo reveal at the end, but it felt a little rushed. You know the kind of ending where motives are revealed and they go back to tell you exactly what happened, and how they did it? Yeah, it left me wanting an explanation and full of questions.
I was really stuck between 2 and 3 stars on this book, I really wanted to like it more. I feel like the premise was interesting but there were some flaws in the plot. *Spoilers ahead* First off a woman shows up in the ER mysteriously, severely injured with no memory. So the doctors reaction is wow she is hot! Wait that's unethical! Oh well! No suspicion that this woman is in danger? If she hadn't guessed spy then I would have guessed this was an abuse situation? And then, numerous things happen like Carys has this random factory/exercise room to train (seduce) Jordan, so Jordan (a doctor, with a medical degree meaning she is educated) goes "Huh! Kay!" She is so un-phased by everything it makes you wonder is she a spy? And then they allude to her bad childhood but really don't explain much beyond it. The ending was happy but almost too neat. I have heard good things about other books by this author so I'll check those out and this one may have just not been my cup of tea.
I like the strong characters of Carys and Jordan, and the mystery of Carys bring an ex spy.
I also really like Ghost, who was potentially a traitor of their agency, but turns out to be good. Carys tries to protect Jordan, but so much keeps happening, they spend more and more time together and fall in love.
The adventure part of this book could have been better, the romance was nice. Jordan never really tells Carys how emotionally abusive her mother was, and the strange house reno that never really happens has no purpose.
It would have been better if Jordan's Dad had left something in the house for her to discover so she'd know he didn't leave them, he was an agent who was killed.
Still a good book, with betrayal, romance, and a good ending.
I loved the story, well written. I love how the stories are about finding love, but with a suspenseful aspect to them. I couldn't put this book down. I was so nervous throughout the book. It was nail biting. I truly enjoyed the spy aspect of the book. I enjoyed the descriptions of the locations and the relationships between the characters. I really enjoyed the journey that both Jordan and Carys went on in this book. I loved the added story of the past regarding both characters and how it brought them together in a interesting way. If you enjoyed this book, I recommend the other books by Noelle Winter, they are amazing stories as well.
I have read all of Ms. Winter's books, and I enjoyed this one the most. The story captured my attention and I read the book in one sitting.
I do wish that there had been less repetitive inner dialog between Jordan and her mother. Their relationship was quite dysfunctional, and I would like to have seen this relationship explored more fully.
I would have given the book five stars if it had been edited better. Typos and grammatical errors detracted from the story for me.
I do recommend the book for people who enjoy the lesbian fiction genre, especially those of you who enjoy a good suspense story.
This was an interesting reading with a lot of potential, but I expected a lot more.... what happened yo Frankie and brinna???? Did they died in the fire?? The author forgot about them. Jordan s a doctor and Carys is a spy. They met at the hospital, sparks fly and the adventure begins. The author has a vivid imagination...just need a little adjustment to make it better.
This book was very suspenseful almost from the start. I like the fact that the two main characters get together maybe a third of the way through the book. I've been reading too many books lately where they don't really get together till the very end. This is very suspenseful to the very last page. Noelle Winters is certainly a star to be!
This book had two of my favorite subjects, medicine and spying! So it was a great read for me from beginning to end. Lots of plot twists. I am afraid to say any because I get accused of giving the storyline away. But it is well worth the money!
I enjoyed this book, it was a good read that captured my imagination and kept it throughout the story. I just wished the story would have continued on.
The storyline itself was good, but there were inconsistencies a lot especially when Jordan's dad left. Mentioned at age 4, then 6 then 10. Otherwise not bad
