The Grid can give you everything you ever need, except a way out.
Vance Nolan has fallen on hard times. Dishonoured, jailed for tech-theft and disowned by his family, he now works as a junker in a machine graveyard.
Life couldn’t get any worse. Until it does.
Pursued for reasons he does not understand, Vance has only one to remove himself from the Grid—the worldwide network that encompasses all aspects of modern living—in an attempt to thwart those who want him dead.
As the Grid closes in around him, Vance will make a discovery about his past that will not only change everything he thought he knew about himself, but about the world around him as well.
Mark R. Healy is an author and musician from Brisbane, Australia. From an early age he loved to create, and often assembled his own illustrated books with accompanying stories - and then forced his parents to buy them.
Unfortunately this model was not scalable and Mark now seeks to promote his works to a wider audience.
Mark has also combined his storytelling prowess with music, creating a project called ‘Hibernal’ through which he interweaves original sci-fi stories with his own music to create an immersive theatrical experience for the listener. Combined with a professional voice cast and sound effects, these “audio movies” are available online through iTunes, Bandcamp and Amazon under the name ‘Hibernal’.
Fantastic Sci-Fi Romp set (i think) at the dawn of Marks robot revolution from his earlier works, Interesting characters and an intriguing William Gibson inspired idea that starts off with a man on the run to save whats in his brain (A la Johnny Mnemonic) then takes that idea and takes in in a world (not far from our own) where the net is all encompassing and corporations control the world. What then follows is a breathless chase through the dirty underbelly of the city through a drug fueled after haze chased by a seemingly unstoppable force. Part Gibson,Part Terminator, Part Matrix but forging its own path in an interesting angle, I cant wait for the next part
Grid Wraith is set in the not top distant future in a society that’s injustices and crumbling values are reminiscent of where we are heading right now. There is social comment here, albeit wrapped in a cracking page turning Si-Fi thriller. This is why the story is so compelling and why the characters resonate so much with us. I suppose this is what much great Si-Fi has always done and Mark R Healy does it very well
The lead character Vance Nolan is a hunted man for reasons he doesn’t understand. Healy as always racks up the tension and keeps his narrative flowing at. His characters in Grid Wraith are as fully rounded and believable as always and that’s what draws the reader in and keeps us hooked to the end.
This has a grittier feel and a slightly less frantic pace to his ‘Reach’ series of novels but you’re still rooting for the outsiders and forgotten people of society. It’s not quite a dystopian world but you get the impression that that’s just round the corner, which again mirrors much of what we see around us in our world today.
I highly recommend this new novel from a great new voice in Si-Fi and I’m eagerly awaiting the next one
Excellent futuristic novel with excellent characters
I don’t give 5 stars to a book unless it’s superb all around. This one makes it on all counts: well-wrought story and characters, good writing that’s nearly error free (which shows an author who cares enough to get it right). He caps the story with a very compelling cover that got my attention in the first place. (Indie authors take note: covers do matter—a lot!)
While this has some story elements we’ve seen before, Healy puts them together in a fresh way. Any sci-fi writer or reader knows how hard it is to pull that off. The author had my attention from the opening paragraphs with an interesting character and an interesting voice that made this a page turner for me. (I am a critical reader.)
As for the story itself, the author’s synopsis tells you all you need to know, so I won’t repeat it here.
I highly recommend this novel and am eagerly awaiting the next installment in the series, but in the meantime, Mark Healy has gained a new fan, and I will definitely check out his other works.
That was fantastic, as I expected from Mark Healy.
I love reading science fiction novels, so when I read the premise for Grid Wraith, obviously I was excited. What makes this book unique however, is that it's more realistic than most Sci-Fi books. The future Healy masterfully creates is believable yet exhilarating. It's rare to find a Sci-Fi book that leaves me thinking about society's future like Grid Wraith did.
His characters are flawed, in a good way, which helped me connect with them and feel their emotions throughout the novel. I instantly love a book more when I can sympathize with the characters. Overall, the book was solid and I was extremely happy to have read it. Definitely check it out, and check out some of Healy's other works like After the Winter. You won't be disappointed.
I previously read The Reach by Mark R. Healy and loved it. I really liked Mark's pace and energy. So when I started reading Grid Wraith I had high expectations. I found the book had a Kafkaesque feel in most of the way through. Vance is a rather clueless character bent on self destruction. Partway through the story we find out he's actually pretty smart, but I still found myself yelling at him to wake up and connect the dots. When the high tech gadgets come out I have to admit my interest level went up and I started enjoying the story more. Overall I liked it and would want to read the next one in the series.
I read this as an advance copy after signing up for Mark's newsletter.
I was lucky enough to discover Mark's first book at the time of release and have been snapping them up as soon as they come out.
He doesn’t write stories as so much as create worlds. I love Mark's futuristic take in this book, the near future but not totally unrealistic .
The characters are not black and white but very much shards of grey, managing to make me care about a junkie just looking for his next hit is testament to that.
Can not wait for the next book as this is a compelling story and world.
GridWraith is a fantastic book! It's once again a fast paced novel with some great themes running though it. I really appreciate the depth Healy goes to to create realistic characters who are completely believable. I love that the characters are not one dimensional standard heros. The story really drags you in too! It's probably my favourite of Healy's novels. I couldn't put this one down and read it in a couple of days. Well worth a read!
