Spying for the Union army has taken a heavy toll on Gabriel Laniere. Though his cause is noble, the constant deception required has eaten away at his soul. And never can Gabriel risk getting close to anyone—not even God. Yet Camilla Beaumont, daughter of the Confederacy, just might be the exception. Courageously, unbeknownst to family and friends, Camilla works for the Underground Railroad. This dangerous secret rivals Gabriel's own. Perhaps Camilla could understand the sacrifices he has made in the name of duty. And the unlikely partnership they forge could be the key Gabriel seeks to a soul-shaking truth larger than any conflict—love.
A very well-done historically story (well, except treating yellow fever with quinine, which was funny, especially seeing what’s going on lately with quinolones for the current pandemic) which treated both sides with dignity (though it was clear the author is strongly Yankee in sympathy, she didn’t make all the Southerners unapologetically bad).
Having read this author’s other books under her name of Beth White, I can say this story captures a similar flavor of the Coastal South and would appeal to a similar audience.
A richly detailed historical with a fast paced adventure. There are a couple of eye-rolling moments but in all it was a very nice read where the love aspect doesn't over-shadow the plot. A very interesting turn of events rounded out this wonderful Love Inspired Historical!! I ordered this one off of Amazon and it arrived to me bruised; battered and beaten but I'm glad I kept it together long enough to finish. A keeper.
Redeeming Gabriel was a book that had espionage, romance, suspense, and Civil War history all wrapped into one. In only 280 pages, the author was able to take me on a journey to watch two people meet in the height of the civil war where they joined forces to keep more death from happening. Things weren't always pretty, and this wasn't a soft-hearted romance; but the truth of the Civil War is that it was nor romantic - it was an ugly war where brother fought against brother and the unthinkable was done among Christians.
Kudos to the author for keeping my interest from page 1 to the end of the book, and for reminding us that the "Happy Ever After" is only in fair tales.
White's work is always enriched in the deep south, particularly Mobile, Alabama, which is just across the bay from where I live. I love reading up on local history. This inspirational author never disappoints. Not only does she delve into the Civil War era of Mobile history, she digs into the nautical history of the military. I recommend this book for the hero, Gabriel, who is a Union spy posing as a minister, the colorful walk through Civil War Mobile and Baldwin County as well as the well-written conflict between the h/h.
It seems that there are few Civil War era books out there, but this one fits the bill. Twists and turns, all the issues that were part of the day had me turning pages, including the historical facts. This was the war that tore families apart--and this book doesn't back off this tender topic. I've always loved Civil War history and novels, too, so I was glad that the Love Inspired Historical line came out with one.
I enjoyed this book. Once in awhile I enjoy reading a "Christian" book, mainly because there is no blatant sex, violence or use of 4-letter words. This book takes place during the Civil War and concerns two people who meet and are drawn to each other, even though they support different political views. As far as being Christian, the author isn't "in your face" with references to God or believing. I like that. So anyway, I liked the story and will probably read more by this author.
This book was so delightful from the very beginning. I learned so much about the Civil war from a personal perspective. It was like you were the past from some you knew and met. Also the war and love did not allows go together. War would divide families and love would bring together those from opposing sides. This was a book that I will treasure always.
