Not by Might, Nor by Power is the only authorized autobiographical series of Lonnie Frisbee, an evangelist, missionary, and the original "hippy preacher" of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
In Book One, The Jesus Revolution , Lonnie opens up about the brokenness that marked his early life, his experimentation with drugs and different forms of spirituality, and his radical conversion to Christianity. After beginning his groundbreaking ministry amid the craziness of the Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco, Lonnie heads south to minister alongside Chuck Smith at a small church called Calvary Chapel. A major revival occurs among the youth in Southern California, resulting in thousands of salvations around the world during this cultural phenomenon known as the Jesus People movement.
My husband and I were curious about the Jesus People movement, so this book attracted us. Lonnie Frisbee is a bit of a tragic figure, and Not by Might… is his memoir. It was interesting and informative at times, but it could also be tiresome and annoying at times. The man was called to preach, not to write. An interesting point was that the Jesus People movement was bigger than the Great Revival! The descriptions of the movement were my favorite parts.
Watched the movie Jesus revolution. Wanted to find more info about the characters in the movie. This gives some good insight and more detail that was going on during that time.
Part one of his man's testimony and life. I highly recommend one of my favorite biographies that I have ever read! Even though He is kind of a controversial man, I still recommend these books and the two that follow. I was hooked and read all three in like a week.
Challenged what I believe about the Way. Changed the way I live out the Way. Ultimately lit a fire beneath my toes and lit my hands ablaze. Lead me Jesus.
Reading the life of Lonnie Frisbee was an encounter with the Living God who chooses to manifest himself wherever and however he chooses. Although His Presence is real in traditional church communities, ancient and apostolic or more recently arrived, Jesus and the gift of His Holy Spirit is not locked inside their walls Like Francis of Assisi in the 13th century, Lonnie yielded in obedience to Jesus and so manifested the Spirit's presence in his broken human lifestyle. This is what true holiness of life is about. ...our humble existence transformed by the Power of God's presence in our life. Lonnie's autobiography reveals the reality of how God through the person of Jesus attracts a real human person to Himself and, then, sends him out in the Power of His Spirit to draw others into the circle of his loving friendship.
I loved this book. I grew up in Southern California and my sister took my brothers & I to church with her at Calvary Chapel. As a young girl of eight I immediately knew the teenagers in those services were different than the kids in our neighborhood. A few weeks ago I saw an advertisement for a new movie coming out about the JESUS movement. I called my sister up and told her a movie about Chuck Smith, a young hippie & Calvary Church was coming out. She said that would be Lonnie. So I saw the book and ordered it. Wow it's a great story a stroll down memory lane. I definitely will be ordering the next two books in the series. I also plan on sharing this book with my sister tomorrow!
This book was written by a friend of Lonnies from tapes Lonnie had done before his death telling his story. So the words are his, put in book form by Roger. I really liked this book, and from these pages, I really like Lonnie. This is the first of three books on his life. This one covers his childhood through his marriage, the Jesus Movement, divorce, and missionary journeys. Lonnie lived a flawed life, as we all do in various ways, but oh how he loved Jesus and wanted everyone else to love Him too. This is a very honest look at the life of Lonnie Frisbee, who, while telling of what he did for Jesus, also told his flaws. I look forward to reading the other two books on his life.
For people who are interested in the Calvary Chapel movement and how it all started, this is a great book to read. This is Part 1 of 3 about an evangelist called Lonnie Frisbee who was one of the main guys who kicked off the Calvary Chapel movement. This is a very honest and inspiring book about what life in God is all about and how God can move through broken people. At times it was hard to follow the timeline because he flicked back and forth at times between the past and the present time when he wrote the book (early 1990’s). But a great start to a 3 part series.
Very exciting time in history. After seeing the movie Jesus Revolution I had to read that book and this book. I love both books and will definitely read the next two books about Lonnie Frisbees life. If you want to learn about the greatest revival in America go see Jesus Revolution. I'm 70 so I lived during this era. Amazing time to be young.
This book was one of the most powerful books I've ever read. Each new chapter held something new and exciting about Lonnie's life. Reading this book made me long more for the power of God. It made me more hungry for Him. I want to know Him more. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the Jesus People Movement and more about how, God works.
Saw that Kelsey Grammer will star in a movie about Lonnie and The Jesus Revolution. Decided to read about his life first. Definitely written in his voice—fascinating portrait of him and his work AND a unique time in American history.
This book series was a super interesting version of Lonnie's life story, and I'm glad Lonnie/Roger decided to release it. It should be supplemented with other testimonies such as the 2007 documentary (http://lonniefrisbee.com/about.php) which is also available on Amazon Prime Video to rent for $2, or his former wife Connie's response (https://www.godreports.com/2023/02/co...) to the 2007 documentary, or others' testimonies such as this Ruttkay video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMpFN...). May the Lord be gracious to anyone involved when the Holy Spirit begins moving mightily again in the USA! (I'll post an identical review to the other books in this series.)
I've heard of Lonnie Frisbee for years, and a lot of that information was controversial.
So, I picked up this book--his story in his words as written by the friend who ran the tape recorder (basically).
We'll see what happens in the next book (This is book 1), but I couldn't fault much of his exegesis.
Frisbee died in 1993, a different time altogether from now, and had a huge influence on the spiritual lives of many. If you're interested in that time period, signs and wonders, Calvary Chapel, or the Vineyard Movement (plus the Shepherding Movement), you'd find this an interesting read.
When I saw the movie and then heard that some things have been smooth over to make it more accessible for audiences. I became very interested in learning more about Lonnie frisbee. I really hadn’t heard anything about him before that movie. After digging around a little I found these three books And decided to get them and hear from himself how he saw himself. It has been an interesting read so far.
And other videos and YouTube interviews about this anointed man and the impact he had on the world! God uses broken vessels with childlike faith in mighty ways and Lonnie was certainly that and sadly tossed aside as he suffered alone and died from aids but his impact will rise again- and influence another Jesus Revelation.
This is a powerful illustration of the way of the Lord and our frail human bodies. God had a plan for Lonnie and Lonnie did as much as he could for the Lord with all the weaknesses and hurts he lived with daily. Lonnie surrendered and gave his life to serve the Lord as much as possible . Thankful for this book and the great move of the Lord.
Lonnie Frisbee was probably the key figure in the story of the Jesus People movement, a revival of Christian faith that spread among young people throughout the world in the early 1970s. His personal account of his life of preaching teaching and evangelism shows how big a difference one life can make.
Lonnie's story is so moving and compelling! His story can be relatable in parts of your own walk with the Lord and are inspiring in others! Don't be surprised if you are changed by reading his story!
This was an informational yet highly entertaining account of Lonnie Frisbee's early life and ministry. I can hardly wait to start parts 2 & 3. Well written and dripping with authenticity, it had me laughing, crying, and longing for a closer walk with Jesus. Highly recommended!
I’ve been watching videos and reading articles about Lonnie. I ordered the book on Kindle read it in a few hours. It was really good to see his humility and yet the anointing of God was so strong on him. I will probably order the next one!
I so enjoyed Lonnie’s autographical book, NOT BE MIGHT NOR BY POWER: THE JESUS REVOLUTION. A remarkable story of one called to do Gods work. I am excited to read the second book in the series.
