In the war-torn, storm-swept South Atlantic, a small band of highly-trained SBS experts embark on a vital secret to sabotage Argentina s stock of deadly Exocet missiles. The dangers are the coastline is exposed and treacherous, the missile base is surrounded by vast tract s of open land, they must infiltrate and destroy without ever being detected. Some say it s impossible... but no one underestimates the SBS s lethal capacity. And one man, Andy MacEwan, an Anglo-Argentine civilian recruited to the team as guide and interpreter, has more than the success of the mission on his mind. His brother is a commander in the Argentine Navy Air Force and there is no love lost between them... Good rollicking stuff- full of tension and highly authentic technique'. TODAY
Alexander Fullerton (1924–2008) was a British author of naval and other fiction. Born in 1924 in Suffolk and brought up in France, he was a cadet during the years 1938-1941 at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth from the age of thirteen. He went to sea serving first in the battleship Queen Elizabeth in the Mediterranean, and spent the rest of the war at sea - mostly under it, in submarines.
Fullerton's first novel SURFACE! sold over 500,000 copies. Then he worked on the 9-volume Nicholas Everard series that made his reputation.
Gripping story somewhat based on a similar story I remember back in 82??? Ex Forces scran based banter related too. BZ'SS all around to the boys if most of what I heard to be true
For my money, Alexander Fullerton was one of the finest thriller writers of the 20th-century, his war service as a Royal Navy submariner giving him unique insights into military life. Sadly, hardly any of his back catalogue is still in print and none of his works are available as ebooks.
If you can hold of them, the 'SBS (Special Boat Service) trilogy', Special Deliverance, Special Deception and Special Dynamic are terrific books.
Special Deliverance follows a group of SBS operatives as they infiltrate Argentina during the Falklands War. Their object, to sabotage the Argentine airforce's supply of Exocet missiles, and do it in such a way that no-one will suspect they were ever there.
I “picked this up” (as much as one does on Kindle these days) based on the Sea King on the cover. So much for that advice. This was a great read and encouraged the reader to actually want to learn these characters, instead of brute commando A or B… readable people in a thing that happened (in a sense). This story was wonderfully balanced: those on raid and those “back home” (albeit still in theatre) were interesting throughout.
Some very good storytelling here by Fullerton and if you like a novel that gets right to the action you will enjoy this. The story alternates between on sea activities and a small SBS group inland that is engaged in a sabotage mission. The characters in this story are all credible. Looking forward to exploring the next book in this trilogy.
The Falklands war brought to life, the SBS tend to go unnoticed in general so it's nice to read of their actions and this is one that could have happened.
Having a friend who was in the Falklands I read this book with great interest. A really good story with lots of twists and turns. I would recommend it to any reader interested in the SBS or the Falklands.
