Jude Gilliam was born September 20, 1947 in Fairdale, Kentucky. She has a large extended family and is the elder sister of four brothers. She attended Murray State University and received a degree in Art. In 1967, Jude married and took her husband's surname of White, but four years later they divorced. For years, she worked as 5th-grade teacher.

She began writing in 1976, and published her first book, The Enchanted Land (1977) under the name Jude Deveraux. Following the publication of her first novel, she resigned her teaching position. Now, she is the author of 31 New York Times bestsellers.

Jude won readers' hearts with the epic Velvet series, which revolves around the lives of the Montgomery family's irresistible men. Jude's early books are set largely in 15th- and 16th-century England; in them her fierce, impassioned protagonists find themselves in the midst of blood feuds and wars. Her heroines are equally scrappy -- medieval Scarlett O'Haras who often have a low regard for the men who eventually win them over. They're fighters, certainly, but they're also beauties who are preoccupied with survival and family preservation.

Jude has also stepped outside her milieu, with mixed results. Her James River trilogy (River Lady, Lost Lady, and Counterfeit Lady) is set mostly in post-Revolution America; the popular, softer-edged Twin of Fire/Twin of Ice moves to 19th-century Colorado and introduces another hunky-man clan, the Taggerts.

Deveraux manages to evoke a strong and convincing atmosphere for each of her books, but her dialogue and characters are as familiar as a modern-day soap opera's. "Historicals seem to be all I'm capable of," Jude once said in an interview, referring to a now out-of-print attempt at contemporary fiction, 1982's Casa Grande. "I don't want to write family sagas or occult books, and I have no intention of again trying to ruin the contemporary market." Still, Jude did later attempt modern-day romances, such as the lighthearted High Tide (her first murder caper), the contemporary female friendship story The Summerhouse, and the time-traveling Knight in Shining Armor. In fact, with 2002's The Mulberry Tree, Deveraux seems to be getting more comfortable setting stories in the present, which is a good thing, since the fans she won with her historical books are eager to follow her into the future.

Jude married Claude White, who she later divorced in 1993. Around the same time she met Mohammed Montassir with whom she had a son, Sam Alexander Montassir, in 1997. On Oct. 6th, 2005, Sam died at the age of eight in a motorcycle accident.

Jude has lived in several countries and all over the United States. She currently lives in Charlotte, North Carolina and has an additional home in the medieval city of Badolato, Italy.

Lost Lady is the second boko in the Lady Trilogy, but the first book to read of this trilogy. There was no rhyme or reason that I picked this book up, I just wanted to read more of this author and this seemed like a good fit for me. The heroine of the story is very naive and innocent in the beginning. She has pretty much been imprisoned because of her fortune. Her uncle has been behind it because he will stop at nothing to gain access to the money she will have. But when she overhears her fiancee and her uncle talking about her and none of it is complimentary, she confronts them, and they force her out of the house with nothing but her nightgown on. She ends up in the docks and stumbles across Travis. He takes control and sees her fed, clothed and seduces her until he realizes that she is a virgin and not some dockside whore he picked up. Travis and Regan are at odds except for the desire they have for each other. They cross the sea all the way to Virginia and end up falling in love despite what keeps them apart at times. This is a story that reminded me of those older romances that won my heart. It has some characters that are very amusing and I loved the bantering, the shoe throwing and the hint of danger these two face. We see Regan grow from a naive girl into a confident woman who fights her own battles and for love. Its not your typical romance, a bit predictable but engaging and heartwarming at times. I just need to read the other two books because his young brother is a hoot, and his closest friend is a rascal.

One of those books that i regret reading solely based on ratings...
The second half was unbearably annoying....just flipped through the entire second half...

-the author was simply in a hurry to finish the book...
the pregnant heroine (f#@* i forgot her name :* goes to show the kind of impact she made on me...) the baby is born in one paragraph...i mean Really????WTF??? ...
- 3 yrs pass by quickly and meanwhile the hero is busy being a companion to Margo "the witch who caused the separation" on one of her shopping expeditions
- and then the author goes all out by dedicating 20 pages for the most annoying grovelling cum proposal of 700+ roses...
- and then to add to the useless plot was the eccentric drama at the end with the sudden appearance of wesley, kidnapping, fire, accidental and unintentional deaths of the two villains...

Overall i am thoroughly annoyed to the core and hence decided to vent out my frustration by writing a review...

I thoroughly enjoyed this one! I find Jude Deveraux to be a bit hit and miss, but when she hits, the nails it.

I'm not sure what drew me to Reagan, the heroine. At the beginning of the book she was helpless and naive. Forced out of her uncle's house after learning that the man she loved only wanted her for her money and refusing to marry him, she finds herself on the docks, where in the real world she would have been gang raped. Luckily, this is the world of romantic fantasy, where she runs straight into the arms of the strong and attractive hero.

Of course, the hero mistakes her for a prostitute and doesn't realize his mistake until it's too late. Oops. In his defense, she was pretty responsive. In her defense, she was completely vulnerable both physically and emotionally.

The thing about Reagan was that she never had a chance. Up to the start of the book, she had been a prisoner in her own home and knew dangerously little of the real world. Her actions might have seemed stupid, and I suppose they were, but she honestly had no idea how to survive. I Think she expected people to be basically good and kind.

Travis, on the other hand, was a demanding autocrat. Actually, he managed to do this and still be likeable. To be honest, I'm not sure what else he could have done with Reagan besides take her home with him, because he was right -- she'd be killed or worse if he let her run around on the streets. And when he took her home, he did try to give her some space to find her own place among the household. She just wasn't ready for it yet.

And so she runs away, and the two are apart for years. I usually hate this tactic, but in this book, I think it was the only thing that could have happened. Reagan needed to find herself. She couldn't truly love Travis or be happy with him until she could learn to love herself, and be happy with herself. I loved that moral.

The ending might have dragged just a bit, but basically, I really liked this one and definitely recommend.

I think I'm going to rate this book as my upper limit for tolerance of crazysauce. I was entertained, and I didn't fling the book across the room, but I did get to the bit with the elephant and then think, ok, this is probably going too far.
Learning to tightrope walk in three days, though, perfectly plausible.

A reread from last year. I was in need of a guaranteed historical romance win, so I turned this book. It was one of the first Jude books I read, and and I never got the chance to review it. Regan Weston had grown up with no freedom, though she knew no better. Her uncles tattered mansion, and her shabby clothes were considered the finest to her. Being a sheltered and naive 18 year old, she never saw through her uncles intentions. Reagan was left a size able fortune after her parents death, the problem is she can’t access it until she’s 23, or till she’s married. So her uncle plans for her to marry a nobleman Farrell, who is just as money hungry as he is. Though Regan loves the weston estate, it is clearly in shambles and her uncle is desperate for her fortune. One night Regan overhears the two of them discussing their plan and insulting Regan. She confronts them but her uncle gives her an ultimatum, agree to marry Farrell or be kicked out of the house. With nothing but her nightgown and slippers Regan runs into the night to escape them. But unfortunately Regan has never been outside the estate and knows nothing about the dangers of Liverpool at night. She’s attacked by a group of sailors when suddenly she runs into a huge figure she passes out and awakes at an inn. Her savior is Travis Stanford, a wealthy American farm owner in England for business. He immediately takes a liking to Regan and her fiery spirit. He offers to take her home but Regan refuses to tell him any details about herself. With no other choice he brings Regan along on his voyage back to America. Now in a new land, with a stranger and no one else to turn to, Regan and Travis are forced to get to know each other.
This is a very nostalgic book for me. I love the cozy colonial feel to it, with the inn and the ship. The best part of the book is the traveling aspect. Sailing to Virginia in close quarters with Travis, amazing. This having been part of the “James River” series, it will always have a special place in my heart. That being said I don’t love the miscommunication trope in this, mainly because they spend 5 years apart. I just really hate huge gaps of time without seeing each other. When Morgan leaves and starts her own hotel in another town, the cozy vibes are back and better than ever. Travis Stanford, thought not a Montgomery, is one of my favorite male leads from Jude. In order to win back her affections he delivers 700 roses throughout one day leaving handwritten notes in every one. Not only that this man brings an entire circus to town for his daughter and learns how to walk a tight rope, unreal. It’s a really sweet story that is filled with all the historical elements I love. Is it her best work? No I don’t think so, but it still will always be very dear to me.

Jude can be hit or miss for me. This one is very 80s written, a bit cheesy, set in the 1790s. Which, for me as the reader, has been my favorite time period she’s written about.
The concept of this story sounds amazing, a sweeping saga from England to America — in rugged Virginia.
But the first meeting with Travis he thinks she’s a whore. It just blurs the lines too much and makes him seem horrible. His speech pattern is also written as a stereotypical western American man right at the first meeting. But it does settle down by chapter 5, and the book becomes more of an American Saga.
The best part of the book was the ship and traveling to America. The three stars for that half.
The last half was completely melodramatic and rushed. Like she was writing at top speed to get the book over with.

I thought I was getting bored or scared with this novel because it begins in England and the girl is kidnapped and brought to America but then after getting here, she runs off for 5 years. Where does she go, how does she live, she knows how to do nothing, and then there is BRANDY!

I'v read this months ago & must say I totally love this book. This is going to be one of my all times favourites..I already re-read it so many times.. I could really understand by Regan was so naive & innocent. It really does happen when you donot have any exposure to the world. I LOVE TRAVIS. I donot think it was a rape. She obviously did respond to his every move. She loved whatever he did. I knew he fell for her the moment he saw her in the morning in his senes. The way he felt protective of her.The way he didn't want to leave her & go back. I loved the ship scenario. He was jealous, I liked it. The way he took care of her, then married her later.Ok I agree he didn't express but, he was the way he was. He was crude & never thought, Regan wouldn't understand his love without expressing. My heart totally went out for Reagan & even I felt like crying when she thinks Travis just left her. The way she cries to herself to sleep. It was too heart wrenching. But, when Travis comes with literally every kind of flower on the earth, that was done..It was way too too sweet & clearly indicated how much he loves her. Then later in his house, I felt when he knew that Margo treated Regan badly, he should have consoled Regan but he didn't know how to. Then, It was so so heart breaking when he runs to the wagon for Regan & asks about her with those feverish eyes. It showed his love for Regan. I really felt for Travis when he roams for months to findout Regan when he loses his money. Then, finally when they both reunite it was too too pleasing. The way he goes on his knees all defeated saying why didn't you undertand without me saying that I love you..The way he proposes & then carries her away..I can literally go on & on about each line..I will just love this book always...I loved Regan & Travis.

I say rape, he says seduction. He thought she was a prostitute and no, really didn't mean no. Then he takes her to America against her will even though she's practically a child. Disturbing book. Later when Regan grows older, the romance isn't too cringe worthy. But until then, I couldn't really enjoy this book.

This book reminded me strongly of Kathleen Woodiwiss's The Flame and the Flower. The basic plot is the same- young English girl runs away and is picked up and mistaken for a prostitute by a sexy and rich American visitor to England. Of the two books, I have to admit Devereaux wrote the superior version, since in Flame, the heroine was raped, and in Lost Lady she was overwhelmed by lust and seduced.

As much as I did enjoy this read, and as excellent as the storytelling and prose was, I could not give it five stars. I intensely disliked the heroine, Regan. She turned quickly from a frightened and fragile innocent young woman into a stupid, abusive, nasty little scullion. I would not have blamed Travis, the hero, if he had dumped the little idiot in the worst part of town and forgotten all about her. At first, I liked and sympathized with her, but she soon turned into a belligerent anus and I couldn't tolerate her. Every time she started to redeem herself and become likable again, she would behave so stupidly and ruin it all. She had no right to be so verbally abusive when she clearly enjoyed it every time she had sex with Travis. When she finally found a way to become an independent woman, she did it in such a spiteful, nasty, stupid and selfish way, I could not cheer for her success. Regan is a coward who summons her courage at the wrong time and expresses it through all the wrong behavior. She was so aggravating, I had to set the book down for a day before finishing it.

The reason this book earned four stars instead of three was the hero, Travis. He is probably the most lovable male character I have read in any romance. His only real fault is that he's a bit overbearing and bossy at times, but being a rich plantation owner who essentially made his own fortune, it's natural and understandable. In reality, Travis was kind, loving, giving and protective, not to mention a classically studly romance hero. He's everything a woman would want in a man. Travis not only rescues a woman he could quite easily had left to a cruel fate, but he lavishes her with gifts, gives her a home and does the honorable thing by marrying her. He proves through his actions that he loves her and only a complete dolt wouldn't see it. But does Regan appreciate any of it? No. Instead she betrays Travis's kindness, which leads to placing him, herself, his family and her child in mortal danger. Regan does not deserve Travis, and he almost appears stupid for clearly loving her so much.

If it were possible to change reality, Travis should have Heather from The Flame and the Flower and Regan should be given to Brandon.

A cozy historical romance...
Reagan is 17 years old and engaged to someone she thought loved her until she over hears a conversation between her boyfriend and uncle. she learns that it is a prearranged marriage so that her boyfriend and uncle can get their grubby hands on her inheritence and money left to her after the death of her parents.
She refuses to marry and his kicked out into the streets with no clothes or money, she cant get her money until she is 23. she is alone and dont know how dark and terrible the real world can be but she soon discovers just how ugly it can get when she is attacked by a groupof sailors that were out to sea for a very long time, they only want one thing from her... Travis sees what is happening and he rescues the young girl before she is brutally raped. He takes her under his wing and protects her because she refuses to tell him where she came from and who her guardian is.
over time they grow feelings for one another but they keep letting their stubborness and mule headedness get in the way.
A good cozy romance to snuggle up with

I gave this book five stars because I'd just given Deveraux's Twin of Ice four stars. Easily it's nine stars between the two, but you can't award fractional stars. For the record, maybe 4.51 stars to Lost Lady and 4.49 stars to Lost Lady.

Now, to Lost Lady. I can't believe that Deveraux did not read Woodiwiss's The Flame and the Flower (1972) which marked a real turning point for romance. The parallels are extraordinary. They both start in England. They both cross the Atlantic. Both crossings meet near-fatal storms. Both are welcomed on this side of the Atlantic into rich plantations in Virginia.

That said, there is not even a whiff of plagiarism here. The plots and characters are entirely different, though they both cross the Atlantic. In fact, the Atlantic crossings are very different, but I'll not spoil the plot for you by commenting further on that point.

At the risk of commiting spoilers, do you like heroines who have babies? And do you like the heroes who love them? Just some of the reasons to love Lost Lady.

To tell you the truth, this was not the "usual" - Jude Deveraux type of story.
Her books were always full of angst. This one did not.
So imagine my disappointment for not encountering the kind of tingly feelings I anticipated when reading the author's books. Sigh.
In fact, I found myself getting very annoyed with the heroine. She was oh my goodness - so dim witted - to put it mildly. How could one be so intelligently challenged as her? I mean, yes, she was entitled - always living with hoards of servants at her beck and call and all that, but not knowing that the kettle was supposed to be held by the handle that she burnt her hand???
I also get it that she was a young one but ... puh-lease ... this was supposed to be a fiction story so perhaps create a smarter heroine?
She did proved herself to be a resilient one though, so I must tip my hat for her on that.
In the end, when the Hero found her, everything was literally like a "circus".
No angst! Truly!

By now you know I am a huge Jude Deveraux fan. Reading her books is like going home. She creates characters and places that you want to revisit over and over.

In Lost Lady, we meet Regan a woman who has had her entire life run by her guardian. When she flees her home determined to run her own life she never dreams she will run into an American who vows to protect her.

When Travis finds Regan on the streets of Virginia fleeing for her life he vows to protect her even if it means protecting her from herself. He never dreamed that this tiny slip of a girl would turn his life upside down. However, he is determined to protect and love her at any cost.

I love Travis and Regan because, for as much as Travis wants to protect Regan, she is just as determined to run her own life. Watching Regan grow and blossom into a self-sufficient woman was such a joy. I also love that Travis pretty much does everything in his power to woe her.

This story is full of love, laughter, and romance for all time. It is another wonderful story by Jude and I love the characters so much.

I don't really write reviews. I read this a long time ago and came across it again. I forgot how insufferable the H was! He knew she was being bullied and mistreated by servants who held the OW in high regard and his solution-She needs to figure it out for herself or she wont grow a backbone!
I get the author needed some convoluted reason for her to run away but I really don't understand how he could claim to love her, know she was absolutely miserable and be like eh she needs to figure it out.

Also, no groveling on his end and at one point I believe he had her admit he was always right! I think in the context of not helping her find her place with the servants at the plantation.

What he should have done is fired the lot of them, given them real consequences for their treatment of her. Then included her in setting up new staff. That would have given her his support and allowed her to gain confidence.

Although a little over the top, this book is enjoyable. You get to know Regan who is young and has never had a chance to do anything for herself but has always been taken care of. When she meets Travis Stanford, it is more of the same until finally, pregnant, she runs away and begins to find herself. Since more time is spent on Regan's time being taken care of by someone else and less on her abilities once she finds herself, so to speak, it was harder to like the second part of the book. A little more time and depth in that area would have made the book much better. I could have happily skipped the whole courtship scene, especially the circus, and spent more time with Regan going from poor and pregnant to learning to be a success at business.

Another awesome novel by Jude Deveraux!!!

I could hardly put this book down! The only problem with this book, was it was to short! I've read her novels before and have always enjoyed them. I would have liked to have the story continued on into how she received her inheritance and how her life changed. How many children did they have? It seems like book 2 should have been book 1. Now I'm looking forward to book 3!! Thank you for your imagination and style !!

I apologize if Ms. Deveraux sees this three star rating and gets annoyed about it. And maybe she should: I didn't finish reading it. I did not take into consideration that this book was written in 1985. That's 45 years ago and things were different then. Ms. Deveraux's has gotten better and better over the years so I suppose I should have factored this in.

At any rate, you should consider readding this if you are a Deveraux fan and MUST ready every thing she has written (I'm still working on that).

Enjoy.

Sweet love story

This was a very sweet romance. I fell in love with Travis myself.. At first I thought Regan was a little brat but throughout the story, we get to watch her grow into her own.

The only thing I didn’t like was that I felt the ending was a bit rushed.. Would have been nice to have an epilogue but maybe I’ll get one as there is another book I’m this series.

I really enjoyed this book. Lots of sexy times and romance. Very good read!

I read it, I Loved it. Read it a long time ago and I gotta confess, the inner me shed a tear. Regan and Travis were.... He was incredibly high handed, which was pointed out- severally and Her growth was just beautiful to behold. Yes, behold, cos I watched it all play out (in my head, but, you know). this was the first Devereaux book I read and it set me on a long love path with the writer.
