About the author

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

I read this book in English. I have the hard-copy version but you can also access it in Gramedia Digital.

I had read Sherlock Holmes since I was eleven years old. My dad bought me Indonesian version from Penerbit Narasi. Several years later, I want to read it in English version and I decided to buy this version because it is quite cheap compared to buying it online.

This book contains six short stories
1. The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes: The Boscombe Valley Mystery
2. The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes: The Copper Beeches
3. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes: The Final Problem
4. The Field Bazaar
5. The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton
6. The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire

For me, to re-read it in ten years after, it is quite nostalgic. Eventhough I can predict the solution, I still enjoy how Watson and Holmes naration.

If you want to start reading classic novel, I would suggest you to read Sherlock Holmes. It is accessible from Project Gutenberg, too.

My fave is the Sussex Vampire, with it's simple and heart-breaking conclusion. And Augustus Milverton, with it's hilarious and satisfying conclusion.
The Final Problem almost makes me cry... God, Moriarty is awful!

In short, this book makes me want to read more of the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. Someday.

Membaca serial English Classic dalam Bahasa Inggris memang tantangan tersediri. Kosakata yang tidak semuanya umum digunakan, menstimulasi otak untuk menebak, mengira, atau mengaitkan pada konteks atau keseluruhan cerita untuk mendapatkan pemahaman tentang cerita yang utuh. Perbendaharaan kosakata dan idiom pun diharapkan bertambah, meskipun tentu saja melupakan sepertinya lebih mudah daripada mengingat dalam urusan "hafalan".

Kisah tentang Sherlock Holmes yang ditulis oleh Sir Arthur Conan Doyle berlatar kehidupan di era 1880 hingga 1914 (era Victorian atau Edwardian. Cerita pertama Sherlock Holmes adalah A Study in Scarlet yang diterbitkan tahun 1887. GPU telah menerbitkan cukup banyak kisah Sherlock Holmes dalam Bahasa Indonesia dan ada dua buku yang termasuk dalam seri English Classic yang berbahasa Inggris.

Dalam Short Stories Bagian 1 ini, karakter Sherlock Holmes selalu didampingi oleh Dr. John H. Watson yang merupakan teman sekaligus tokoh yang menceritakan kembali petualangan-petualangan Holmes. Mereka berdua bermarkas di 221B Baker Street, London.

Dari buku ini akhirnya diketahui bahwa kisah dari Sherlock Holmes ini di satu titik "comes to and end". Sebuah akhir yang dikisahkan dengan getir oleh Watson, Sang Sahabat, yang mendampingi tokoh Holmes hingga akhir perjalanannya.

Meskipun dibaca oleh seseorang yang bukan penggemar serial detektif garis keras, cerita-cerita pendek Sherlock Holmes ini cukup membentu mengasah logika pembaca, meskipun tetap saja dugaan awal kita tidak selalu terbukti benar alias "kecele". Di beberapa cerita juga ada "plot twist" yang membawa kita ke akhir yang mengejutkan.

Jadi di buku ini ada enam cerita pendek yang menurutku menarik banget sih dan buat aku ending dari setiap kasusnya ga ketebak. Kita beneran dibawa buat mikir dengan dikasih clue-clue yang mengarah ke penyelesaian kasus dan mikirnya pakai logika banget sih. Aku baru baca satu bukunya Agatha Christie dan ini juga buku pertama Sherlock Holmes yang aku baca dan kayaknya aku lebih suka ceritanya Sherlock Holmes deh:)

Buat yang tertarik baca Sherlock Holmes tapi masih ragu mending coba baca cerita pendeknya dulu. Selamat membaca!

I liked some of the stories, but I think I'd rather read them chronologically rather than these short stories all mixed up. So, 3.5 out of 5 stars for the book.

This is my first sherlock holmes's book that I ever read and it gave me new perspectives about whole sherlock holmes stories that I ever seen. I never knew that it will be not that hard to understand, witty with the solution of every cases, and I would love to read another book of the original sherlock holmes stories.
