Karina Lang has enough on her mind dealing with college applications, her mother’s ailing health, and busting her butt after school at the café she works at. Forget about boys. Who has the time? The last thing she needs in her busy schedule is to be mugged by a band of thugs.
Her destiny is more important than she could ever imagine.
Out of the shadows, a mysterious stranger emerges—her rescuer. Coincidence? Not for him. Devyn St. Cyr reveals a startling truth about Karina, and she must befriend him to gain the answers she needs. However, uncovering the secret of her heritage threatens more than just her worldview, but also her life. Regardless of her feelings for the dreamy, steamy Devyn, Karina finds herself on unsure footing with him and a hot target for every ambitious otherworldly creature.
Falling in love won’t keep her alive.
As she struggles with her rare gift, Devyn supports her, protects her, and challenges her. But in order for Karina to survive, she must do what no other Kitsune in a century has accomplished: acquire nine tails.

Ive not read a book before that's about a Kitsune. It was quite interesting in itself. Well written, characters are defined and their roles are layed out perfectly to allow us (the readers) to understand who she truly is. We get to know a bit about the bond or reliance that Karina has on the handsome Devyn St. Cyr. looking forward to reading more.
First of... you might love this book - but I dont like books that are only 131 pages long. I only read the description and with kindle unlimited you don't think twice about getting a book. I enjoyed the book for most parts, but for me 131 pages is way too short. In normal books the introduction just started and here it felt the same.. after reading I was like " Wait what? That's it?" The book definitely got me interested, but the author wants to make 9 books out of this series and only 4 are currently available. The main characters are interesting, the guys are hot and I really want to get to know more about the back story.. I might come back when all books are published, but it's really annoying to get a new book every time after only 130 pages - we will see.
This is a very interesting book , it isn't your usual shifter book . We are talking Japanese anime here . I was really blown away with this book . Karina's life changes one night behind the coffee shop she works at . When two things come after her and want her soul . Enter Devyn St Cyr .wielding swords with snakes attached as he sends the two back to the other world . Well that is when Karina's life changes she shifts and finds out that she is a kitsune and with the help of Devyn who is sworn to protect her . She is thrown into a battle that she doesn't know if she actually wants and a crown she doesn't want to wear . Will she be able to collect the 9 tails and save both worlds from crumbling down around her. This was an interesting book . The characters were well written . Karina at first struck me as really naïve . She needed to grow up just a little . She also seemed like a people pleaser she did everything for everyone else but nothing for herself . But as you read the book you really see her grow up and become a great heroine . Devyn is sexy and really kind of bossy sometimes . He knows his way around with swords and can kill almost anything . He is good for Karina and knows how to reign in her kitsune . They are good together When I started reading this book , I will admit I thought it was a normal every day shifter book . I had to look up what a kitsune is . But when I got into the book I couldn't put it down . There were just a couple of spots where the author could of done a little bit better editing . A couple of missed words and words that didn't sound right . There is also a big cliff hanger at the end . I did really enjoy this book and loved the characters and the back stories . I can't wait till I dive into book two and see where Devyn and Karina end up going . If you want a different type of shifter and some Japanese legend check it out . You won't be disappointed .
New author for me and I typically do not read YA. I have before and they never grabbed me a lot of the time. Not many can write YA successfully without making the characters sound like 5th graders. So, I avoid it. However, I decided to give this a try. I was very impressed. Its a page turner and kept my attention. The world building and characters and story were very well done. We follow Karina on her journey when she discovers she's a wee bit different. She refuses to believe such things even when they stare her in the face. She slowly starts to accept things and you cant forget about her "guardian" Devyn who was born to protect her.
I liked Karina very much. She's definitely not TSTL and has some common sense even if she doenst know much about what she is. She's smart and resourceful. Devyn is quite the character and you cant help but like his arrogant ways and smirks. They have major chemistry but its not really touched on a lot which isnt a big deal but of course you kinda root for them to do something with their relationship at some point. Admit feelings anyways. This is the first book. Now, I have to be honest and say I am not sure I'll continue the series. I'm not a huge fan of series like this that go on and on into the next book. I'd like to read them one after the other because they end on cliffhangers so to speak and its not my favorite thing. Please dont let that stop anyone else from reading these. Once the series is finished I will definitely read them but right now I'll put it on the back burner.
I was on Amazon scrolling paranormal books and adding to my wish list when I stumbled upon J.L Weil. This series intrigued me as it centred on a story of a Kitsune, which is not typically depicted in ya novels.
The story focuses on teenager Karina, who has an ill mother, so she works and studies hard in order to build herself a good future. She is attacked by some supernatural beings and shape shifts into a fox for the first time. As it’s happening, she doesn’t really know what’s going on, though is saved by a sword yielding boy Devyn. He reveals what she is, though she doesn’t really believe it and tells her where her ancestry is from - which is another world/realm. It is his duty to protect her at all costs. Karina is continuously attacked as these beings want her power and Devyn starts training her to control her shifting. She has to earn her nine tails to be powerful as a Kitsune and go to this other world in order to save it due to a struggle of power.
I didn’t realise it was a short novel series until I looked properly at the details of this book. I enjoyed the pace, liked the world that was created and thought it was a good introductory piece to set up the whole nine tails series. Sure, it could have been a longer tale, but that’s what the other books in this series are for. I am interested to see if more Kitsune mythology is revealed in upcoming books.

I have read other books by J.L. Weil and have loved them so I figured I would give this book a try. Man am I happy I decided to give this series a try. I was questioning whether I would like the book based on the description. Usually when I read paranormal romance books, they have to do with witches, werewolves, vampires, fey, etc. When I say the fox part, I questioned how good this could be. In the end, I decided a fa was close enough to werewolves (not really but it convinced me to read the book).
Once I started reading the book, I couldn't put it down and before I knew it, I was finished and left wanting more. This is a quick and easy read as it is only 150 pages, but it is quite the teaser for the rest of the series to come.
Karina - Still unsure about herself as she thought she had her whole life planned out ... well for the next couple of years. Anyways, that has now been completely turned upside down.
Devyn - The sexy mysterious man. I am intrigued to see how this will turn out since they both seem to have chemistry and are drawn together.
J.L. Weil, I love this book and I am already hooked on the series! When will book 2 be out?!?

I’ve been a avid reader of JL Weil for Years but have only got around to starting the Nine Tails Series and I definitely wasn’t disappointed with book 1, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Karina finds out that she’s a Kitsune when she’s attacked and in comes Devyn her Shaman to protect her as that’s what he was born to do. They seem to forge a kind of love hate relationship right from the start as he makes her feel weird due to their mystical connection and they seem to like bickering with each other, or Karina just likes to question everything but who wouldn’t when you randomly shift into your fox form. I thought it was cool that Deyvn has some kicka*se swords as well as Wrath and Fury the snakes that are linked to him and his swords so they help send each creature that’s after Karina’s powers and therefore trying to k*ll her essence back to Otherworld. I’m really looking forward to reading the next book in the series so I can see how Karina quest to obtain more tails so she can save Second World using her full Kitsune powers goes, Devyn will be there helping her along the way as well as keeping her safe. I’d recommend this book, series and author to everyone.
First Shift by J.L. Well is an amazingly well written enticing book. I could not put it down and have already down loaded the second book in the series Storm Shift. This is the story of a young teenager fox shifter experiencing her first shift and how her world turns upside down because of it. Karina had no idea of the supernatural world until she shifted and two creepy dudes tried to steal her soul. As Devyn comes to her aid she finds out she knows nothing about who and what she is and her mother as well. Character development and in depth story line are what make this book work. You know these characters and their motivations based on the back story. Imagine finding out that you are responsible for another world's survival when you biggest problem was making it through high school graduation. This is a quick read and you will totally enjoy it.
Karina's sole focus is on getting good grades so she can get out of town . . . until she's attacked by a group of otherworldly beings, turns into a kitsune (fox), and is saved by Devyn. Devyn tells Karina that he's there to protect her, and he needs her to save their world. She just has to do what no kitsune has done in over a century - grow nine tails. I guess college is off the table.
I found this story good, the pace fast, the romance nearly swoon-worthy. But as much as I wanted to love it, it just didn't hit it for me. The story drops on a cliffhanger, which is expected, since this series is being done episodically.
But a great read, with a great premise, and interesting characters. There's so much more to learn. You'll just have to wait for all 9 books to come out to learn it all. :)
This does end in a cliffhanger, it is the first installment in a series and will continue in the other books.
This was a great story. Karina is almost done with high school when she gets attacked outside of her job. She shifts for the first time and is saved by Devyn. Devyn tells her who she is and what she is capable of. Together they have some things to work out, and now there are people after her and she's no longer your average teenager worrying about everyday stuff.
I enjoyed this book and will definitely continue with the series to see how it progresses. I finished very quickly, couldn't put it down.
This is a fun book to start of a new series and my first Kitsune shifter book. J. L. Weil does an amazing job bringing you into Karina’s story. You feel as if you are experience the story yourself. Karina is a strong young woman but very unsure with the sudden turn of events in her life. Devyn is very protective and is trying to help Karina deal with everything. Their chemistry is great and I can’t wait to see what happens in future books. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to more of the story.
This is an imaginative story with a new spin on the kitsune legend of Japanese mythology. I liked the characters and the story a lot. Then why only 4 stars you ask? Well, call me unrealistic or old fashioned but I believe that teen novels don't need to encourage foul language in teen. This story should probably be considered New Adult for that reason. If my teen got a hold of this, I would be upset. As an adult, I enjoyed the story. The character of Devyn is a mystery I would love to dive deeper into and I hope the author does in the rest of the series.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
So I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy this book or not because it is about a fox shifter. Shifter stories are not exactly my go to stories. However this book was so unique and intriguing. I loved every second of it! The intensity of the romance is to die for. I just can't wait to read and learn more! Such a thrilling story!!!
This book was amazing! I sat down after breakfast and did not stop til it was done. I instantly started looking for possible release dates for book two because I cannot wait to hear what happens next! Will her friends learn the truth and if so how will it effect them? Does her dad know? Will her mom go home and get better? Will she fulfill her destiny? And what magic is needed to get lots of tails? So many questions and the plot and characters are so amazing I need more!
It's different then the books normally read about shifters but this book kept me reading, I liked it. She's a Fox not a wolf but an important one at that! Now it's time for mom to step up and tell her daughter everything. I think she should have long ago and I feel sorry she had to find out what she was from her shaman and a hot one at that! Lol can't want to read more of their stoy
Karinas life is about to change in ways she could never imagine when Devyn shows up I her life, he lets will never be the same again. This book is awesome, you are sucked into the story from the first page and you won't want to put it down. It has everything , magic, mayhem, twists and not one hotties but two. This is an awesome read and not one that you are going to want to miss.
The first in a series, these characters wasted no time hooking me in! Shaman and kitsune...what better way to get a reader wondering. This is a novella, so the groundwork was set quickly and just the right amount of details have been disbursed to get my imagination flying as to what the next book will bring. To me, that equals book success! Fair warning, resolution has not been found yet so book two is a must!
I liked it but found a mistake(?) between the first and second book. In the beginning of this first one she’s been 18 for a few months but in the beginning of the second her mother says “you’re not even eighteen yet.” That sort of thing irritates me so I hope the author sees this and fixes it. Otherwise a good book and still 5 stars even with the mistake.
I am a big fan of J.L Weil's writing style. With that said, I had a slightly difficult time getting into this book. It did not lag at all. It was action from the very beginning and while it was predictible, it was a fun read. Not to certain about japanese mythology but I'm hooked enough to give the next one in the series a try.
This is the first book I have read by this author. The young heroine didn't know her heritage and found out with a bang about her origin and the problems she encounters. This story has it all touch of romance, other worlds, fierce fighter, magical creatures. Had to keep reading to finish he book.
This a short, but fun read. Karina is attacked a few months after her 18 birthday and finds out that her mom has been keeping secrets. The biggest one earns her a hot bodyguard. Her world is changing and fast, and she has to fight to stay alive. There is no explicit adult content, but there is violence as assassins are out to kill her.
Karina is a high school student trying to get through life. College applications, after-school job, and a sick mom. Suddenly a mysterious man, Devyn St. Cyr, appears with a secret. She's not who she thinks she is. She's a Kitsune, a fox shifter from another world called Second Moon. She must try to achieve nine tails. Great first book. Loved it.
While I don't normally read Young Adult romance I absolutly enjoyed this books story line, this author knows how to bring a book to life and as you read it you can see it playing out vividly in your head, the only downside was with how the book ended but that's because I don't really like cliff hangers but will for sure be reading the rest of the series
Karina Lang was a normal senior in a small high school in Washington state getting ready for college when she is attacked behind the restaurant where she works and turns into a white foxlike creature.
Very quick read.
Fave scenes: Wrath & Fury, Kat losing her phone, the electric attack and helping Devyn fight.
I was given this book for a honest review. I Loved it !!! And I would have bought it, it was fantastic. 'Kitten' is lovely en Devyn wowwwww LOL. I want book 2 please. Thanks for letting me read it. xxx Conny
I really enjoyed reading this take on a fox shifter. The only negative for me was that there was unnecessary cursing in the book. I took away a stars for language, but overall, this is an excellent read.
I absolutely ADORED this book! If you you like books about kick-ass girls and drool-worthy guys, this is the book for you! Karina and Devyn... You'll remember them and want to read more about them.
