Fair Haven

Rate this book
A rabies-like super virus bleeds into Melody’s neighborhood, turning all those infected into ravenous aggressors. While watching society crumble beyond her threshold, Melody hides in the safety of her attic, waiting for her husband to return. Four days have passed, and it’s becoming apparent that he’s not coming home. She pushes her fear aside and propels herself out the front door, with a baseball bat in hand, ready to venture across town on a mission to save her husband - and their failing marriage.

However, after teaming up with her neighbor John, her determination is put to the test. Despite butting heads with the man next door, she develops an unsettling attraction to him, and they grow to rely on each other for strength and friendship.

Unsure if her husband is still alive, her reasons for going on are called into question and it doesn't take long before she begins to doubt her strength.

Fair Haven is a viral-outbreak horror story laced with personal struggle, romance, and a tasteful smattering of shoot’em-in-the-head action.

Fair Haven, by Red Lagoe, is an engrossing read for anyone who enjoys books about ordinary people living in apocalyptic circumstances. From the very first page, I was hooked. As a zombie junkie, I was impressed by the realism of the fight scenes, and appreciated the engaging and fast-paced storyline. Lagoe writes characters with heart, humor and realistic voices. I found myself rooting for Melody as she navigated the new reality of her world crumbling around her with tenacity and more than a little reluctant vulnerability. Fair Haven’s cast of characters will leave you with just the right amount of laughs, sighs, and screams. A fun and well-written read by a debut author. I’ll be waiting to see what she comes up with next.

“Don't let the crap that happens to you in life keep you from living. Live with a fire in your heart and a fire under your ass and fight like mad.”

Genre: Horror/Post-Apocalyptic.
Number of Pages: 228.
Perspective: Third Alternating.
Location: New England.

When humans are infected with a rabies-like virus, the world becomes a dangerous place. Melody teams up with her sexy neighbor to find her missing husband, amidst ravenous creatures.

At this surface, this may seem like another zombie book, but it is so much more than that. I definitely got The Walking Dead vibes from this because it was more about the character development and relationships than the zombies (but there is some butt-kicking action too). Lagoe said she pictured the main male lead as Joe Manganiello. Oh, yeah. I can see it. Definitely a sexy guy to fight alongside.

I loved the tension. The author and I have talked in the past about characters in toxic relationships. She did a great job realistically depicting emotional abuse. I also loved some of the girl power in this book. I love female leads who find their inner strength!

I highly recommend this book! It is a perfect read in preparation for Halloween. But it isn't just for horror lovers.

Let me first say that I am a huge zombie fan.
From Night of the Living Dead to The Walking Dead to the fast-moving rage zombies from such films as 28 Days Later and the remake of Dawn of the Dead, I am all in!
Fair Haven is obviously written by a zombie fan, for zombie fans.
This fast-moving, character driven novel is sure to please fans of the undead. Action and suspense dominate the plot, and the author skillfully employs touches of dark humor to provide the necessary levity the book needs.
Fair Haven reads like a really cool "webisode" of The Walking Dead. The characters feel real, with the action matching that same genuine feel as the characters. The book goes easy on the gore, so if you're a fan of explicit gut munching amid buckets of blood you're likely to be let down here. This wasn't an issue for me however, as I feel that zombie fiction often relies too heavily on this factor.
As a reader, I felt the editing could've been a little tighter in spots, but it didn't distract me from the reading experience. Red Lagoe is a fine writer,
and I look forward to reading more of her work.
Fair Haven is a hell of a fun read, zombie fans!

If it's got zombies I'm going to read it. This was recommended by a friend who reads similar to me, and knows the author. For a first book this one has some fun twists. It's recommended as a romance+zombie+survival story. I engaged easily with the main characters, hated the husband (I expect that was what was supposed to happen), liked the "guy-next-door" and cheered when they saved the dog. There are zombies, a different take on them, they have a shelf life. That made me laugh. In a good way. Again, pretty strong first story, and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a quick read, zombies, and a small budding romance.

Great debut novel

I highly enjoyed this zombie novel. The characters were well written with plenty of zombie action. It is rare for me to stay up all night to finish a book unless it is one of my favorite zombie authors, so that is quite a compliment. The main character had grit and a resounding strength that was effectively incorporated into the story line. I look forward to more from this author!

Great read

Once you start reading this book you won't be able to put it down! The story flows seamlessly and is easy to visualize. At times I felt as if I were the main character. This was hands down my favorite summer read. There better be another book coming out!

I loved it!

This is a great story. The characters were excellent. Some you loved and others not so much, but they were like real people. I really got into them. The story line was really well done and believable.

Great storyline. Hard to put down

This book had a great storyline and kept my interest throughout the story. It was a believable tale of people surviving while carrying the love and hate of those lose to them and for the people they meet on the way.
