Earth's First #4

Rise Of The Acolytes

Rate this book
Maura and her friends are back on Earth after stopping the murderous alien invaders known as the Anisari. Well at least most of her friends made it back. Still reeling from the loss of some of her team mates, all she wants is to settle down and live a normal life. But life in the aftermath of a near invasion, including the destruction of the ravenous World Engine by The First, will never be the same for all humanity. With the destruction of large parts of the World Wide Web, key military factions have left the world of shadow operations and are now jockeying for their place in the new, largely internet-less, world order. Old enemies have come out of hiding with new plans. In America, a rich businessman schemes to take over the government and steer the United States onto a new path of power and world domination. In Russia, a new menace is rising. With tech companies around the world suddenly unprotected by their firewalls, he is able to raid their knowledge banks and combine them with the remnants of alien technology to create a deadly new force: genetically engineered vampires for sale to the highest bidder.
Dragged back into action by a government that hates and fears her, Maura finds herself fighting to clear her name and that of her friends, in the wake of an ugly smear campaign that is being waged against anyone with accelerated abilities. This time, she finds herself fighting alone. The First, the massively powerful alien who made first contact with mankind, has been exiled from the planet in the wake of the destruction of the World Engine.
Can Maura and her friends clear their names, find out who is behind the attempts to stage a coup within the structure of American politics, and defeat a madman with an army of biologically enhanced monsters that rival even her power?
Find out, in this exciting new chapter of the incredibly popular Earth's First series.

Now I'm just getting annoyed. Plot pulls straight from X-Men movies and the super-super villain so smart he can outsmart, out think and out shine entire combined police and military investigators. Ever procedural police show from Castle to Law & Order has had at least one if not several. It's boring. An unstoppable villain and now unstoppable but untrusted super powered good guys.
When I got involved in these books in early June the write up for the first book stated, and still does, that this is a trilogy. I excused the incredibly old fashioned cliff hanger endings every book had. I even forgave the author the fourth book. I thought he might have some loose ends a reunion of sorts but NO! The fourth book starts off and entirely new adventure for Maura and crew and likely another trilogy. I'd check the author's web page for info but the page, advertised in his books, doesn't exist. I'd send him a polite email asking how many more books we can expect (or is he going to milk this cash cow to dust) but he doesn't seem to reply to email messages as he promised he would. I'm annoyed. This was a fun, quick and easy read (except for the rampant typos) that's now just being drawn out and milked for all it's worth. Not really sure I want to keep walking off cliff edges because we've found the trilogy that never ends. I want a resolution. I don't care if they all live happily ever after bench pressing buildings or the bad guys get the upper hand, kill everyone and take over the world. Either way, end this already, please.

Update: Just got done with the reread of this and the second time was a bit of a struggle. It's been a few years so most of it had slipped my mind. I feel much the same this time as last. I'm not so good with the augmented human Vampires. I don't think the human body can survive on just blood. Its still a human body. But, after the review above was posted I had some minimal contact with the author. Turns out this wasn't a "cash cow" as I insinuated but actually wasn't a hit but sold poorly which lead him to saying he wasn't going to continue the story leaving the massive cliffhanger hanging forever. I understand writing is a business and all but I hate not knowing.

A good continuation

After the end of book 3, the series could quite easily have been considered over. This book is a good start to a new storyline, with links to the first 3 books.

Some of the twists seemed wrong though, and I didn't like the betrayal sequence.
Also, better proof reading is still needed - it's better than it was, but there are still many errors in the text.
