`Triveni` a confluence of three rivers, these poems are unique in their style. No one has ever tried this form. Guljar is the first to do so. The first two lines of each of his poem meet each other giving complete meaning to the poem, but the third line? It secretly meets this confluence, underground; away from our sight. All these poems mark the prominent silence in Guljar`s poetry. This silence has immense power. It is expressed very strongly. His poetry has very few words, but each has tons of meanings. Each one is very subtle. It sometimes is agitated with the parting of the near and dear, it sometimes regret the controversies in the society. Keeping in touch with it is the eternal truth and the understanding.

ग़ुलज़ार नाम से प्रसिद्ध सम्पूर्ण सिंह कालरा (जन्म-१८ अगस्त १९३६)[1] हिन्दी फिल्मों के एक प्रसिद्ध गीतकार हैं। इसके अतिरिक्त वे एक कवि, पटकथा लेखक, फ़िल्म निर्देशक तथा नाटककार हैं। उनकी रचनाए मुख्यतः हिन्दी, उर्दू तथा पंजाबी में हैं, परन्तु ब्रज भाषा, खङी बोली, मारवाड़ी और हरियाणवी में भी इन्होने रचनाये की। गुलजार को वर्ष २००२ में सहित्य अकादमी पुरस्कार और वर्ष २००४ में भारत सरकार द्वारा दिया जाने वाला तीसरे सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान पद्म भूषण से भी सम्मानित किया जा चुका है। वर्ष २००९ में डैनी बॉयल निर्देशित फिल्म स्लम्डाग मिलियनेयर में उनके द्वारा लिखे गीत जय हो के लिये उन्हे सर्वश्रेष्ठ गीत का ऑस्कर पुरस्कार पुरस्कार मिल चुका है। इसी गीत के लिये उन्हे ग्रैमी पुरस्कार से भी सम्मानित किया जा चुका है।

गुलज़ार का जन्म भारत के झेलम जिला पंजाब के दीना गाँव में, जो अब पाकिस्तान में है, १८ अगस्त १९३६ को हुआ था। गुलज़ार अपने पिता की दूसरी पत्नी की इकलौती संतान हैं। उनकी माँ उन्हें बचपन में ही छोङ कर चल बसीं। माँ के आँचल की छाँव और पिता का दुलार भी नहीं मिला। वह नौ भाई-बहन में चौथे नंबर पर थे। बंट्वारे के बाद उनका परिवार अमृतसर (पंजाब, भारत) आकर बस गया, वहीं गुलज़ार साहब मुंबई चले गये। वर्ली के एक गेरेज में वे बतौर मेकेनिक काम करने लगे और खाली समय में कवितायें लिखने लगे। फ़िल्म इंडस्ट्री में उन्होंने बिमल राय, हृषिकेश मुख़र्जी और हेमंत कुमार के सहायक के तौर पर काम शुरू किया। बिमल राय की फ़िल्म बंदनी के लिए गुलज़ार ने अपना पहला गीत लिखा। गुलज़ार त्रिवेणी छ्न्द के सृजक हैं।

Sampooran Singh Kalra (Punjabi: ਸਮਪੂਰਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਕਾਲਰਾ, Hindi: संपूरण सिंह कालरा, Urdu: سمپورن سنگھ کالرا) known popularly by his pen name Gulzar (Punjabi: ਗੁਲਜ਼ਾਰ, Hindi: गुलज़ार, Urdu: گُلزار ), is an Indian poet, lyricist and director. He primarily writes in Hindi-Urdu and has also written in Punjabi and several dialects of Hindi such as Braj Bhasha, Khariboli, Haryanvi and Marwari.

Gulzar was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2004 for his contribution to the arts and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002. He has won a number of National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards. In 2009, he won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Jai Ho" in the film Slumdog Millionaire (2008). On 31 January 2010, the same song won him a Grammy Award in the category of Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.

Gulzar's poetry is partly published in three compilations: Pukhraj, Raat Pashminey Ki and Pandrah Paanch Pachattar. His short stories are published in Raavi-paar (also known as Dustkhat in Pakistan) and Dhuan).

এই বইটার উপর চন্দ্র ও সূর্যের স্পষ্ট প্রভাব আছে.. লেখাগুলো তাই সঙ্গত কারণেই সন্ধান দেবে বৃহষ্পতি গ্রহের।

গুলজারের গল্প পড়ে মুগ্ধ হয়েছিলাম, কবিতা পড়েও হলাম। অতএব মুগ্ধতায়, মুগ্ধতায় কাটাকাটি।

Our own desi Gulzar sab's attempt to try his hand on the unique art of Japanese poetry :- "Haiku".
Didn't liked it much but didn't hate it either. Only if I had some first hand experience in Haiku then it would have been interesting to compare the context, ideas and subjects. Reading Haiku in English doesn't do justice to the original Japanese flavour.

Triveni is like couplet with 3 instead of the traditional 2 lines, where the first two lines are connected by a subject or have some semblance of commonalty and suddenly the third line which is the last line of the poem presents before you a hidden context. Its not much like reading between the lines , its more like reading a new line. Triveni reminded me of "Gestalt school of Psychology" which paraphrases "The whole is greater and often different then the sum of its part".

Think of a picture of eyes and another picture of a water drop. Now merge these two pictures and you get an entirely new perspective depicting tears and thus despair or pain.

Won't recommend until you are a big fan of his work. He strayed a lot in this random collection of poems and some of them seem forced or unimaginative.

कवितासंग्रह व माझं नातं कायमच वेगळं राहिलं आहे.कधी मन कंटाळून गेलं,दिवस नीरस वाटू लागला की सहज एखादं पान उघडावं,एखादी छानशी कविता वाचावी आणि मन ताजं करावं असं काहीसं.पण;‘त्रिवेणी’ हा कवितासंग्रह हातात आला आणि मुखपृष्ठावर चमकणारी 'गुलजार' व 'शांता शेळके' ही दोन नावं नजरेत भरताच जाणवलं–या पानांत काहीतरी वेगळं रसायन दडलेलं आहे.आणि मग सुरु झाला‌ यातील कविता वाचनाचा प्रवास.

त्रिवेणी हा गुलजारांनी घडवलेला त्रिपदी छंद.जपानी साहित्यातील 'हायकू' प्रमाणेच 'त्रिवेणी'-तीन ओळींची काव्यरचना.यातील पहिल्या दोन ओळी म्हणजे गंगा-यमुनेचा संगम.जो आहे विषय विस्तार ज्यामुळे कविता पूर्ण होते.मात्र या दोन प्रवाहांखालून वाहणारी गुप्त सरस्वती अधोरेखित होते तिसर्‍या काव्यपंक्तीने-जी या संगमाला एक वेगळीच खोली व गहन अर्थ देते.तिसरी ओळ म्हणजे गुप्त सरस्वती प्रमाणे सुप्त विचारानीं समांतर वाहत जाणारी.

फाळणीच्या वेदनांनी ओथंबलेलं गुलजारांचं काव्य या त्रिपदीतून आपल्या भेटीस येतं.त्यांच्या कवितांमधील शांतता,गूढता व मिताक्षरी सौंदर्य या संग्रहातही ठळकपणे दिसतं.यातील काही काव्य अत्यंत वैयक्तिक, आत्मनिरीक्षणपर वाटतात तर काही सामाजिकस्थितीवर भाष्य करतात.प्रेम,विरह,मिलन,फाळणी,जगणं,
शोषण,नाती,इच्छा,पर्यावरण सारे विषय व्यापणाऱ्या या त्रिपदीत मनुष्य,निसर्ग व संघर्षाचा त्रिवेणी संगम आहे.

गुलजारांची कविता अनुभवाच्या समृद्धीसह भाषांतरित करायची तर अनुवादकामध्ये ते सारस्वत कौशल्य,ती साहित्य प्रतिभा असणे अनिवार्य आणि हे आव्हानात्मक काम कवयित्री शांता शेळके यांनी लिलया पेललं. शांताबाईंनी त्रिवेणीचा केलेला हा अनुवाद,मूळ कवितेच्या आत्म्याला स्पर्श करणारा व त्याला मराठीत नव्याने फुलवणारा भावपूर्ण प्रवास आहे.त्यांनी अनुवाद करताना केलेली शब्दांची निवड त्यांची हिंदी व उर्दूची समज दर्शवते.केवळ शब्दशः भाषांतर न करता,त्या कवितेची मूळ भावना शांताबाईंनी मराठीत उतरवली आहे. मूळ कवितेचा अर्थ,भावना आणि त्यातला 'खामोशी'चा धागा त्यांनी वाचकांपर्यंत इतका अचूक पोहोचवला आहे की,त्यातून होणारा आघात वाचकालाही तितक्याच तीव्रतेने जाणवतो.शांता शेळके यांनी गुलजार यांच्या कवितेला दिलेली ही शेवटची भेट मराठी साहित्यात कायमच स्मरणात राहणारी आहे.

असा हा दोन भाषांमधील व दोन प्रतिभावान मनांमधील अद्भुत संवाद 'त्रिवेणी' च्या निमित्ताने तुम्ही ही अनुभववा हेच सांगेन.

गुलजार एक हरफनमौला कलाकार हैं। जहां वो अपनी कविता और गीतों के लिए जाने जाते हैं, वहीं उन्होंने कहानी, पटकथा और फिल्म निर्देशन में भी खुद को आजमाया है। उनके भीतर का कलाकार नित नए खोज, प्रयोग तलाश करता रहता है। इसी गैर-परंपरागत काव्य खोज का नतीजा है त्रिवेणी। इसमें एक नई काव्य-ध्वनि, नया काव्य-संदर्भ, असहमति और हस्तक्षेप का एक नया कलात्मक अंदाज दिखाई देता है।

इसमें पहले दो मिसरे गंगा जमुना की तरह मिलते है और एक खयाल, एक शेर को मुकम्मल करते हैं। लेकिन एक तीसरी पंक्ति भी है, गुप्त सरस्वती, तीसरा मिसरा जो छुपा हुआ है। इसमें एक नया लहजा, नई और नाजुक बात को नए तरीके से कहने का ढब और शिल्प का नयापन है। त्रिवेणी की तीसरी लाइन हर दिल का सवाल और आवाज है।

1972-73 में जब कमलेश्वर जी सारिका के एडिटर थे, त्रिवेणियां सारिका में छपती थी और किताब का रूप इसने 2001 में लिया।

सब पे आती है, सब की बारी से,
मौत मुंसिफ है, कम-ओ-बेश नहीं

कुछ त्रिवेणी कमाल है , कुछ छू कर निकाल जाती है । पर ये किताब एक मुकम्मल सोच पैदा नहीं कर पाती । ये रेफरेंस बूक की तरह है कि एक बार पढ़ कर मार्क कर लो , कहीं जरूरत हो तो use कर लो । गुलज़ार सहाब कि लेखनी इसमे वो कमाल नहीं कर पाती जो अमूमन दिखाई देता है ।

Easy light read by Gulzar. Was expecting it to be unputdownable but it wasn't half as good. Ordinary poems with a few really good ones.

Would recommend this book for Urdu learners. It has simple, accessible language and short poems which are very conducive to those learning Nastaliq.

An amazing book with such poignant thoughts. Gulzar at his best and the form created by himsis also amazing. Loved the book. Completed in one sitting.
