Do you accept the life you've been handed, or do you step into the unknown, even as it leads you into the shadows? In this new anthology series from writer/artist DUSTIN WEAVER, the characters in three mind-bending stories find themselves faced with this question. In “MUSHROOM BODIES,” Greg struggles with knowing what’s real and fears becoming complacent in a world of human insects. In the first installment of “SAGITTARIUS A*,” war hero Linus Rad is on a mission to the center of the galaxy to learn the dark secrets of his dead father’s scientific experiments. In the first chapter of “AMNIA CYCLE,” Tara, a young Jet-Wing pilot, goes AWOL in the war against the Nuriel in order to help Amnia, a mysterious alien with no memory of where she came from and a desperate need to stop a terrible disaster! When Amnia disappears, it sends Tara on an adventure into the Shadow Zone. Step into the unknown. Journey into the shadows. There you’ll find PAKLIS.

Bizarre science fiction and trippy psychedelia came to mind when reading the first issue of Dustin Weaver's anthology comic, Paklis. The first story, Mushroom Bodies, is particularly bizarre, as a man seems to imagine he and everyone else are in cockroaches disguised as humans. Is that the reality or an expression of the man's anxieties and mental state? It reminded me of the movie Bug, but without the overall tension or the big payoff at the end.

The next two stories fit the science fiction mold better. Sagittarius A* is too short to pass any judgment on (just two pages), but Amnia Cycle is where this comic gets more interesting. A woman comes upon a strange life form and befriends her/it. From here the comic goes the route of adventure, some speculation, and just aimless wandering. For this last one alone I will continue to see what Weaver does. It's also a bonus that the art is nice. If you like things that don't make much sense but give the sense of something "deeper" to understand, this is for you.

Dustin Weaver's one man anthology takes on a distinctive Heavy Metal vibe. The three stories collected in this first issue are all different in tone and style, showing off some nice artistic range. The stories aren't really all that interesting, but I found myself able to get through this easily since the artwork was engaging. The first story, "Mushroom Bodies", places out like a fever dream. The story is a little difficult to grasp, but it mostly seems to revolve around a man struggling to determine if he and everyone around him are actually cockroaches or humans. The second story, "Sagittarius A", is a set up to a sci-fi story so there wasn't much to go off of. The third and final story was "Amnia Cycle" which is sci-fi romp that seems a little Moebius/Brandon Graham inspired. None of the stories impressed narratively, but Weaver's artistic range was nice to see.

Funky science fiction anthology... 3 stories of different lengths. I'm enjoying the art as well.
