Regency Rogues #0.5

Relentless Lord

Rate this book
*This is a re-release of a previously published book by the same title.

Miles Whitely is a shameless flirt with a wicked reputation for debauching innocents. Devilishly handsome, he charms his way through life finding amusement in nearly everything while leaving a trail of ruined young women behind him.

Hannah Walpole was sent to England for a traditional debut; something she wasn’t going to get while traveling with her parents across the African continent. She realizes quickly enough that it is a wasted effort. She simply does not fit in with English high society.

Miles admires Hannah’s adventurous spirit and cool composure, and when the young lady declares she cannot be seduced, Miles eagerly accepts her unwitting challenge. But Hannah has no intention of becoming another victim of his striking gaze or honeyed flattery.

Does Lord Whitely have something more than seduction in mind, or is he truly the cad everyone says he is?

My love of romance began one summer when I was thirteen and complained of boredom. I ended up with one of my mother's Barbara Cartland books and an obsessive interest that expanded from there. My affinity for writing began with sappy pre-teen poems and led to a Bachelor's degree with an emphasis on Creative Writing from the University of Minnesota--Twin Cities.

I love pizza, wine, and dark brooding heroes! With a husband, three kids, and two dogs at home, it can be difficult to find the time (and the motivation!) to write. But somehow the words keep showing up on the page. I am endlessly grateful to the many wonderful readers who enjoy my books and ask for more!

This novella piqued my interest in Amy Sandas as a romance writer, and I am interested in reading some of her other work, but it definitely wasn’t the best novella I’ve read this summer. Overall, it was a light, fun, and enjoyable quick read that – despite some shortcomings – put a smile on my face.

Setting. Lancashire, England, 1815. Story takes place over ~1 week at a country estate party.

Premise. Miss Hannah Walpole (20) was sent to England by her adventurous, traveling parents in order to be introduced to society, gain some English polish, and find a husband. She would like nothing better than to rejoin her parents on the African continent though, as she feels stifled by the ton and that she doesn’t fit in.

Her first meeting with Lord Miles Reginald Whitely (late 20s) is scandalous to say the least and involves him putting his hand up her dress to help fix her garter. She has been warned that he is a rake and seduces innocents left and right, so when he starts to show an interest in her, she decides to put him off by telling him to look for fun elsewhere:
“You are wasting your efforts on me, Lord Whitely. I am unseduceable. […] I am more likely to convince you to marry me than you are to seduce me.”
Unfortunately (or not ;-) for Hannah, Miles sees this as a delicious challenge, and sets out to prove her wrong.

Positives. I liked Hannah’s background and found it to be an unusual and interesting change from the average HR heroine. She sticks out in society because of her life experiences and how she carries herself – she’s young, but she’s no simpering miss; she has an air of maturity and wisdom about her. I appreciated her strength and that she didn’t let other people’s actions/reactions get her down.

Although we’ve all read a million rake heroes (and don’t get me wrong, they’re usually my favs!), I loved that we’re initially setup to believe Miles is one of them … only to discover he’s actually a really good, decent guy! He genuinely likes people and is interested in them. He knows the reputation he has and doesn’t mind it: it gives him leave to harmlessly flirt and what could possibly be the downside of being known as a ladies’ man?

He discovers the answer to that question when he meets Hannah, who is so unique and truly intrigues him, but who is wary of him due to the aforementioned rep. Miles works to convince her that he’s not what she believes him to be, and that his interest in and attraction to her are genuine. It was a nice change to have a hero who was quite sweet from the beginning and who at no point has any ill intentions towards the heroine (… does that sentence sound twisted to anyone else? What is wrong with us and the romance heroes we go for?!).

Negatives. Some things about the story didn’t really make sense or fit, for example: why did Hannah’s parents send her to England? They had long ago decided to flout convention and live their lives as they wanted to, so why would they have any interest in sending their only child back to England, alone, without knowing anyone, to stay with a family member who showed them nothing but disapproval?

The first romantic scene between Hannah and Miles happened too early and pushed the lust angle too much for me. They’re a good couple and I had been enjoying their battling of wills and sparring, so I wish Sandas had held off a bit longer – or at least not let things get very far at that point and kept it brief.

The timeframe of the story was also an issue for me. The only way I can believe a romance that takes place in so little time (a week) is if the hero and heroine knew each other before; although the reader hasn’t been witness to it, the fact that they have a history and actually know each other lends much more substance and credibility to their feelings. While I found a developing relationship between Hannah and Miles very believable and thought they were a good match, it’s so unrealistic that they already love each other after so little time (yes, this is a novella and thus short, and yes, many parts of romance books are hugely unrealistic, but the love piece is essential – I have to believe that, if nothing else!!).

Excerpt.
As they walked away, Miles looked back to Hannah. Her expression of amusement slid immediately into one of weary frustration.

He dipped his head toward hers. “What is the matter?”

“I feel like I am trapped in a perpetual game where the rules keep changing.”

“Then make your own rules.”

“To what end?”

Miles smiled. “That all depends on what you want.”

Her blue eyes looked at him, so clear and vivid, as she seemed to think on his last comment. Then she shook her head. “If you will excuse me, Lord Whitely.”

She turned and walked away, leaving him standing there with an ache in his chest that felt an awful lot like loss.

Decent little novella. I liked Hannah, Miles was your standard rogue hero. I honestly feel like Hannah should have gotten a bigger book just because she had such an unconventional upbringing.

Heroine: Hannah Walpole, 20. Is staying with an uncle in England to come out in society after having lived with her parents in Africa for her entire life.

Hero: Miles Reginald Whitely, age unknown. An infamous rake.

Date: 1815

How they meet: Hannah is attending a house party and gets lost looking for a private spot to adjust her garter. Miles finds her just as she is making adjustments and offers to help her.

What happens: Hannah knows of Miles by reputation and is concerned about being seen with him. She has a cousin who is also just out in society, and the cousin likes to play cruel tricks on her. Miles is happy to come to Hannah’s rescue, but has made no secret of the fact that he wants to seduce her.

Verdict: Novellas don’t provide a lot of time to develop characters and build relationships between them, and I think this story suffered from both issues. The intimacy felt rushed to me and didn’t feel consistent with what I thought I knew of the heroine’s character. I also thought that OK for a novella, but not at all memorable. One need not read this prequel to understand book 1 of the series (which is excellent).

Steam-level: steamy and explicit

This book is very short yet so adorable and very on point. This is why I like the book so much

It told the story about the fateful meeting between Hannah and Miles at the party of Miles' friends, Grimm, where Hannah is having trouble with her garter and Miles helped her to solve that problem within seconds. And of course, during that time, the spark of connection and attraction hit them both in full swing with no where else to turn

I truly enjoyed the way the story was told, the way it ended, therefore it left me wanting more from the book. I wish it was longer because I'd love to see Hannah got the justice by marrying Miles and could shove it on her family. That she's won the battle. Too bad it's so short so I don't get that satisfaction

Overall ratings: 4.3 stars, since it's too short and I would rate it higher if it's longer I think. That's because I truly like the story

For me, Hannah merited a novel-length book given her unorthodox background, but she wasn't exactly given the short shrift. What makes her different & intriguing & a great match to the past-three-novels-teritiary-character Whitely is well explained here.

I suspected the heart of Miles's character to be as described here. Nicely intimated in the trio of novels heretofore. Also gives reason to my asking a few times '...okay but *why* is anyone Grimm's friend?' lol

Charming, quick, good heat, great pond scene. Don't dwell on the details (& nothing wrong with that).

Whitely

I loved Whitely through the 1st 3 books and am glad to find a novella about Hannah. We never got to meet her as she was pregnant with her 4th child in the series, but we knew he loved her. I am so glad I discovered this author and have spent the past 5 days reading 6 of her books. Thank you bookbub for giving.me the first one free.

I love this funny and captivating story.

Engaging and unique in the world of regency writing. A thoroughly good read. I really loved the characters who were refreshingly lacking in stuffiness.
Thank you Amy.

Delightful

For such a short read it was very satisfying. I did not feel that the story was rushed. Fun couple.

Novellas are always too short for me (yes, I realize how idiotic that statement sounds) so I can never fully enjoy them but this one was sweet. A nice round-out to the series.

Perfect example of why I dislike novellas. It’s too short to enjoy the development of the characters! That said fun lil read before the series. This is a new author for me let’s see how it goes.

3.5 stars. This quick, Regency read is fun and charming – just as long as you can leave your history hat to one side. Hannah is definitely not your average debutante, being more used to the wilds of Africa than the ballroom jungles of England. Despite two years of intensive instruction from her family, she’s no closer to fitting in than when she arrived. Which is how she finds herself alone in a corridor at a country house party with a renowned rake’s hand up her skirt!

Okay, so it’s not quite as bad as it sounds, but that’s all part of the fun of this cheeky little read. Hannah is bright and independent, far from the blushing innocent that might be expected of the time. She’s used to criticism and catty behaviour, but as she doesn’t much care for anyone in the country she isn’t really bothered. I would have liked to have known more about her parents and her travels, but I suppose there wasn’t really room in a story this short.

As for Miles (who surely should have been Lord Miles, if anything, and not Lord Whitely since he’s neither the oldest son nor has a deceased father), he’s fun and flirty and has a shocking reputation that I never quite understood – either why he allowed it to continue or how it managed to come about without him being challenged to numerous duels or forced into an unwanted marriage. It’s easy to see why he becomes intrigued with Hannah, though I have to say his behaviour doesn’t always speak brilliantly of him if he really isn’t as roguish as he’s painted.

And all right, if I’m honest, there were a few things here and there that dinged my history and likelihood of accuracy hat (the title for one, the fact that the nearest village was two hours away – just how bad are these roads?, and the fact that Hannah can get soaking wet yet be dry by the time she reaches home and no one will comment on her hair, not to mention that her complexion is so perfect after a lifetime in hot places…), but the story passed by so smoothly and swiftly that I didn’t really have time to get annoyed.

If you’re looking for something quick and fun, with a hint of Regency romance, then you can’t go far wrong with this. It’s a light and easy way to spend an hour or two and I enjoyed it.

Relentless Lord by Amy Sandas
Overview by Amazon:
Hannah Walpole suspected the etiquette lessons her parents insisted upon were a wasted effort. Now, looking around at the ton at her debut, she’s sure of it. Her home is the African continent. She simply does not fit in English Society. Nothing will convince her otherwise, especially not a devilishly handsome lord with black hair, vivid green eyes and a wicked reputation for debauching innocent young women.
Lord Miles Whitely admires Hannah’s adventurous spirit and cool composure in the face of adversity. It doesn’t hurt that their first encounter provides him with the delightful opportunity to get his hands beneath her skirts.
When the lady declares she cannot be seduced, he cheerfully takes up the gauntlet she has unwittingly thrown down. But Hannah has no intention of succumbing to his striking gaze or honeyed flattery. Until a crisis leads her to suspect he’s not truly the cad everyone warned her about…
This is a fun and quick novella! I have never read anything by Amy Sandas before, but since it’s published by Samhain, I figured it was a safe bet! I enjoyed reading this book and found the characters well developed for a short story.
Hannah is from Africa. She has been sent to London to experience a season. To say that she is not having the time of her life is an understatement. The women are cold, the men lecherous and the customs odd. For a woman who has known freedom and adventure, the ballrooms of the haute ton leave a lot to be desired. Until she meets Miles.
Miles makes everything more interesting. He wants to seduce her so badly, but the joke is on him. I love this reversal of fortune when it happens in a book. He becomes the one ensnared in her web, rather than her falling for his seduction.
However, for a shorter book, there is plenty of seduction and naughty behaviour. I think I fell a bit in love with Hannah when she calls his bluff at the lake – a scene not to be missed!
An enjoyable story that features fun characters, a house party full of surprises and some steamy moments. This is the perfect book for a lazy day by the pool!

Hannah Walpole has been forced by her parents to return to England from the African continent she she can have a London Season. She does not fit in with English Society nor her own cousins. Her debuet was held back because her uncle didn't think she was ready. At a house party, she is having a wardrobe malfunction - her garter clip has twisted and is pinching the back of her knee. She attempts to find the WC, but finds Lord Miles Whitely. Hannah can't reach the offending garter clip so Miles volunteers to help. Hannah's cousins have warned her about Miles and she vows to stay away from her. Something about Hannah intrigues Miles. Could it be that she is the only lady not fanning herself in the extreme heat or isn't sweating? It is odd the things that start a romance.

I was so sad when the novella came to an end. Hannah was such strong, independent and unique character that I wish there had been more to the novel. Miles was charming and seductive. This is one of the best novellas that I have read.

I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

Miss Hannah Walpole is hopelessly different. She’s the daughter of African explorers navigating the cold waters of her first London Season, sponsored by her uncle. But after two years of proper “training” in deportment and etiquette, she’s still an original, not at all like the simpering misses of the ton. Fortunately, she has a backbone, but she suffers in silence, bullied by her jealous cousin Beatrice and Beatrice’s snobbish friends.

Hannah and Miles’ first meeting is amusing and cute. Hannah is cool and calm, even when the handsome Lord Miles Whitely helps extract her from a painful garter mishap during a ball. With no other options, she reluctantly accepts his assistance without succumbing to hysteria as most other young women.

3.5 stars. A pleasant Historical Novella that was well written. Nice story and the right amount of steam. It was a bit short, but I expected that. A good lead in to the series and I loved Rebel Marquess which I read first, but that wasn't an issue as each story is complete. I now have 3 more of this author's books to read which I am looking forward to.

Not sure about the title of Lord Whitely for the hero as he has 2 older brothers and would be referred to as Lord Miles or Honorable - depending on his father's title. (I'm nitpicking now, but I notice these things) Also the author mentions the heat. Trivia fact - 1810 to 1819 (especially 1814 to 1816) were the coldest years on record since the 1690's. Authors might like to keep this in mind when setting stories in this period. It was a mini ice age due to volcanic activity. Lots of info on Google about the weather during these years.

This was a cute short read that deals with an outcast of sorts (Hannah who grew up in the African continent) and a frivolously portrayed rake (Miles). There is more than meets the eye for both. She's unusual and interesting with a strength of character that is at odds with her age. Miles might be considered a rake but is actually a decent and sweet man. He is at peace with his reputation and actually enjoys it to a degree.

Is it short so there is a vague undertone of insta-love but the characters and situations were well-crafted that I focused mostly on the engaging dialogue between the MC's. Recommend.

The heroine, Hannah Walpole is not like the other young ladies in her debut. She didn't grow up with England has her home, instead she feels her home is in the African continent. Her parents have tried to get her in the "England tone" for her debut, but for Hannah it doesn't seem to help. The hero, Lord Miles Whitely is to me a fun hero and with Hannah giving the aptitude that she will not / cannot be seduced sets some of the tone for the hero to prove differently.

quick, cheeky, fun read. The characters are engaging, if a bit usual for a Regency Historical, but an enjoyable read, nonetheless. I found "Relentless Lord" to be a fun read, not too complex. It does have a "bad" cousin, who I would have enjoyed seeing her getting her due. A great afternoon read!
