I have a serious love/hate relationship with this story. One of my favorite things about everything I've ever read from this author is how real it is. Society seems to be obsessed with getting happy endings through entertainment since we don't always get them in real life and I love that that's not always the case with Seth King's writing. This one fell right in line with that expectation. It's the first time I've read any of his works that weren't centered around a M/M relationship and I was a little nervous. I'm never sure what to expect when I jump into a book with female central characters that are written by men. Sometimes, the characters are ridiculously underdeveloped or just completely unrealistic because (surprise, surprise) the male author doesn't have life experience to tell them what it's like to be a woman. In this case, though, that wasn't an issue. I loved both Grace and Rowena as characters. I enjoyed their relationship with each other. What I really loved, though, was the way that they pushed each other to grow in ways that we as readers might not even notice until later in the book. This one is beautiful and bittersweet. It gave me some serious Nicholas Sparks feels, but that's never really a bad thing. I totally recommend it.

This author's prose, despite the highly emotional and heart-wrenching nature of his topics, is as sweet as summer in this beautiful story of love that persisted despite absence and loss. I'm always stunned by the flow of language and the beauty in the complete descriptions painted with words by Mr. King. He will top any list of favorite authors that I would compile. His stories, a gift undeserved yet always appreciated!
This is the story of forbidden love that grows between two women over time and shared adventures in the unfavorable setting of North Carolina in the late 40's. Rowena is enthralled by her new neighbor, her beauty and her passion for life. She appears to be everything that Rowena is not. Grace is a "strawberry blonde apparition" with perfect everything. Her clothes, her hair, everything about her is elegant and somehow she falls in love with Rowena. Grace would very much like to wear pants but that doesn't fit her husband's high society expectations and the bruises on her arms are there as proof. When Grace's husband discovers the relationship she is whisked away, never to return. The story continues and the ending is highly emotional yet real.

Grace is a story of hidden, forbidden love. It's pure undying love. Seth King has a talent for brings words to life, you could feel the I've between Rowena and Grace like it's a tangible thing, not just words on a page.
This novella tells the tale of two people who can't love each other, because love-that universal feeling that everyone can feel-is forbidden for them. But that does not stop it from growing. It does not prevent the two women from reaching.
Seth King sets the stage perfectly for these characters. He gives them life and hope in a time where that wasn't possible. It's touching, it's inspiring, it's something only he can do.
If you are looking to see what real true love should look like, look no further than the pages of this book.

A sad story of two women who had to keep their love hidden.
When it ended one kept it hidden for the rest of her life the other got strength from that love and spent the rest of her life fighting so others could show their love
A sad but beautiful and moving story everything I have come to expect from Seth King.
