Lurlene McDaniel (born c. 1948) is an author who has written over 50 young adult books. She is well known for writing about characters struggling with chronic and terminal illnesses, such as cancer, diabetes, and organ failure.
Ms. McDaniel is an author I grew up with in my teenage years, exploring the devastating effect of childhood diseases such as leukemia. Though emotional, I have always enjoyed how she made me feel like these characters could be a fellow classmate, or a friend. At the same time, I was educated in not only the feelings these adolescents went through during such a hard period in their life, but also the knowledge I gained regarding the different diseases. Over the years I fell in love with the characters and their struggles to feel normal in a world of sudden change. This particular book is one that answers the question in the One Last Wish series of who JWC is. This story is the only one in the series that have never read as a child, and happened upon it recently in Bookworm's teacher sale. After reading it, I felt complete now that all the stories were tied together for me, and it has sparked my interest in re-reading each One Last Wish book over again.
This novel presented serious issues. It is a sentimental read that seems dramatic and meant for girl readers. I believe that it shows readers how to overcome challenges. The protagonist is a girl who is diagnosed with AIDS. She is shocked and must come to grips with the situation. She meets a boy who she falls in love with, and he helps her die well, basically. This is not one that I would suggest to many readers. The sentimentality bothered me, and yet I read it quickly because it pulled at my heart--though, I am embarrassed that I fell for this stereotypical romance.
This was the first time I read Lurlene McDaniel's books. I would love to read more of her books. They bring her characters to life. I felt myself feeling all different kinds of emotions & having a lot of health problems myself, I can relate to some of the characters. The books & characters offer encouragement also. I didn't feel like I was alone going through different things such as physical pain, uncertainties, emotional pain, etc. I'd love to read more of her books as well as recommending her books to others.
As might be expected from a McDaniel book, the plot was shallow and had little to no substance. One Last Wish is about a group of teenage girls who all have some kind of major sickness: diabetes, heart failure, etc. One of them has a successful heart transplant and inspires the others, but her friend dies at the age of seventeen. The dialogue is shallow and fake. And the only kind of person this story might appeal to are those looking for cheap soap opera drama.

This is one of the first set of Lurlene McDaniel. Most of these stories are about young teenagers who are faced with a life altering illness that could kill them and must live out there lives while they still can or try to fight to survive. All of these stories were very tragic and reminded me of the fault in our stars.
Sarah has lukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant. She finds out she was adopted and hates her "parents" for it. She gets a letter that came from the Last Wish Foudation and it says the person who sent it has the initials JWC. It contained 100,000 dollars to spend how ever she wants.
The One Last Wish Novels are amazing . I think I was obsessed with them for the longest time. They are beautifully told and each story is as inspirational as the next. I think I've cried on a lot of them too xD
This book has three different stories about kids who are dying. A letter come to each of them granting one last wish just not about their health. This book allows students to see how even with health issues they can still live an eventful life.
Lurlene never fails to make me cry with her amazing writing. Each and every book I've read by her has given me some new insight to life. She is by far my favorite author. These 3 books were fantastic!
It was amazing! It made me cry at some parts. It has amazing romance stories. Kind of reminds me of The Fault In Our Stars. If you like that book, you will enjoy this book for sure!
