This one will make you pay attention...guaranteed...

I know I’ve often said that no two people read the same story but in this case T. C. Orton has taken that to a whole new level. Iudicium is an interactive story so throughout the course of the story the reader has choices to make, choices which will impact what ultimately happens to Fayt, who is the hero of this story.

Now, I could tell you a bit about what happens but truth is if you read the book your story could end up having little to possibly no resemblance to the one I read. However, everyone does start out with the same beginning so you will start out on a ship heading for a prison island and from there things can change drastically.

I was intrigued to read this book, while I’ve heard of interactive books before I’ve never had the chance to experience one and this one sounded good. It’s fantasy and I like fantasy so opportunity knocked and I ripped that door open.

When you read the instructions at the beginning of the book it says to keep careful track of your choices…pay heed to this. I thought I was doing this and part way through realized no, I wasn’t even close so I went back and started again. This time I not only tracked my choice but the chapter I was on and the details of every choice I know it sounds like a lot but truthfully it kept me on track with the story and it was just so worth doing. The choices made by the reader aren’t excessive but I found that they were enough to keep me really engaged in the story and what was happening. Would I want to do this for every story I read probably not but as an exception and a chance to do something interesting, fun and a little different I really enjoyed it and had a fun time.

‘Iudicium’ is the first book that I’ve read by this author and I really enjoyed his writing style. The world building and character descriptions were well done as was the character development. You will encounter some words that are of the authors creation but if you’ve ever read fantasy than you’ll know that’s pretty much a trademark of the genre. For example Fayt is what is known as a ‘skuld’ and while google will tell you that ‘skuld’ is a word the definition given by google is not the definition that is given in this story. For the purposes of ‘Iudicium’ a skuld is a person of mixed race heritage specifically human and eastern elf (or light elf). I know sometimes this can be disconcerting and even annoying if it’s to extensively done but I didn’t find that was the case at all. In this case the author did this enough to help re-enforce the overtone of fantasy but not nearly enough to have the reader…being me in this instance, frustrated because I didn’t know what half of what I was reading meant. The other thing that I really liked was the fact that while the book is approximately 200 pages long because the readers choices can exclude certain parts of the book it’s not an overly long story which I think would have caused me to become a bit frustrated especially since as I said I’ve never read a story that’s interactive.

Be warned there’s definitely sexual content here and some of it’s definitely non-con. How much sex is in the story is going to depend on the choices you make for Fayt as do many of the other events that happen up to and including the ending for the book which could be anything from an HEA or HFN to a FML (F*ck My Life) after all Fayt’s in your hands.

So if you like fantasy and you’re looking for something a little different grab a copy of ‘Iudicium’ get hold of a pen and some paper and see if you can help Fayt survive his adventure and find his HEA. I have to confess the ending I got for him wasn’t totally an HEA but it definitely wasn’t the worse ending that he could have gotten. So, if you want to have a little different reading experience, let me know what happens to Fayt when you get done, I’d love to hear.

I’ve been a voracious reader almost my entire life from about the first grade on, yet in all that time I never read a ‘choose your own adventure’ type book. When I first heard about Iudicium, I wasn’t quite sure it would be for me simply because I’d never read a story set up like that before. I’m sure you’re all guessing what happened after I read it, right? If you guessed that I was immediately going back to re-read so I could make different choices the second time around to see where it would lead me, you’d be absolutely correct.

Immediately from the first page I was sucked in to the story. It’s one of those books where you’re on alert the whole time you’re reading because you don’t want to miss anything since it might affect what path you choose when a decision point comes up. I actually took pictures with my phone of the decision points, then used my photo app to write my decision on the picture to keep track…I also took a picture before I started of the directions just in case, and I actually did refer back to it a couple of times for the conditional branches where I had to choose a particular path based on a decision I made earlier in the book. Needless to say, this all kept me quite attentive throughout the entire story.

The story itself is actually not long overall, I was able to get through my adventure in a few hours. The decision-making part had me on edge because I really, really wanted to get the happy ending and worried I’d make a choice that would wind up with Fayt being miserable or dead in the end. I’m happy to report that I did get the happy ending, but I’m still going to go back and try and make it to all the different endings just for fun.

The story is unique and is loaded with tension not just for our main character Fayt, but for readers as well. Much of the story is dark, and there are some scenes that involved non-consensual sexual interactions that could be a trigger for some readers. Fayt does what he must to survive and try to escape the horrible prison he’s been remanded to, and it was a bit nerve-racking to think I would be responsible for his future.

The other characters in the story do a great job supporting it; I was inclined to trust one character in particular which for me worked out well in the end. The only issue I had with the happy ending that I achieved was that between the decision point where I clicked to my choice and the happy ending itself no explanation of the fight to get there was given; you’re just to assume they fought, they won, and everything worked out. I would have liked to have read what happened, and also had more about Fayt and the person he ended up with before the happy ending scene occurred to show how they ended up the way they did. I know some of this is vague, but saying anything more would be way too spoiler-y, especially with this type of book.

Iudicium was a 4.5-star read for me, and if you are a fan of M/M dark fantasy stories—regardless if you’ve ever read a choose-your-own-path story—you’ll want to check this one out. As I mentioned earlier, there are some scenes that may be triggers for some readers involving non-consensual sexual acts/rape, and while what I read may not be what you get depending on your path choices, I wanted to bring it up as a caution. This story is strictly for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

If you’re on the fence about a darker, choose-your-own-path read…I highly recommend that you take the leap with this one!

This idea is so great!

It's been ages since I've read an interactive story - and back then there were no ebooks so you had to search for the next page and I always ended up spoilering myself.

But I really enjoyed 'using' this ebook and I had fun discovering every possible ending. I would have had more fun if I hadn't read it in one go, though. The endings are rather similar at times. So take your time and read the different routes like maybe a month apart or so?

I have to say, the choices were really, really terrifying at times. Like, I know that nothing bad will be happening in the real world, but I still was full of adrenaline.

So you may be wondering why I give 3.5 stars... I had some problems with Fayt enjoying being raped. And the sexy scenes were not sexy to me (not only because of the rapings, because there were consensual scenes as well. Depending on your choices).

I am not sure about the adventure I have read

It's not very satisfying even though my version has a very good potential for a HEA. Not exactly a cliff hanger, but not a full blown HEA either. Loose ends are left hanging and I hope they will be tied in in the next installment. For now I am a little disappointed in Fayt for not figuring out why he was left on the cliff to be caught and blaming the dark elf for it. Silly boy :(

I loved Choose-Your-Own-Adventure stories as a kid, and this was fun to play. From visiting the geysers to my happy ending, I experienced the perfect story with lots of ups and downs. I might revisit this book later to see what happens if I make different choices...

Contains well written non-con.

Loved this grown up choose your own adventure. Could not put it down.
T.C. Orton has, once again, so carefully crafted a fantasy world, that you can practically see the grotesque beauty and feel the horror of Fayt as he fights to be free of his prison.
I read through 4 adventures, and can't wait to go back for more.
Wholeheartedly recommend you try - will you die horrifically? will you (and Fayt), find your happily-ever-after?
Read it and find out. I'd give more stars if I could, as Orton has effectively crafted multiple stories in this one work.
I give it 5 stars. And I'm heading back in to see what adventure I can find this time.

Book & Author: Iudicium by TC Orton
Rating: 4.5 stars

Saying I was looking forward to reading this adult interactive choose your own adventure story is putting it mildly.

T.C. definitely lived up to my hopes.

The author writes stories in this in-between place. His style is in between beautiful and sweeping and grounded and raw. It’s one of the main things that draw me into his stories. He builds this world with words and descriptions that flow with ease but yet aren’t flowery and built up. I felt as though I was there in twisted halls of the caves trying to make the right decisions, hopefully, the one that would keep Fayt alive. In a place with not much good and evil lurking in every corner I truly was never sure if the path I chose was the right now. But in a world filled with choices is there really any right one?

My fear in such a complicated journey was the characterization of Fayt. Would he get lost in all the different plot choices? Would I feel like I knew who Fayt was? Or would he fall flat because so much had been given to the building of this harsh world with all its choices and intensity? The author was able to avoid all of these issues when all was said and done. Although, I wish I could’ve seen more of Zeke (from the path I chose) I wasn’t disappointed in who he was. When Fayt felt leery of trusting him, I did too, but I had a good hold on who the character was even through the other characters hesitation.

The story is not overly romantic but the sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat kind of tense with a raw and harsh story to fit the environment it was born in. The beauty of it all is I can go back and chose a different path to get a different story maybe even a different ending.

Soooo very different

This book is literally unique and one of a kind it’s more than just reading you literally get to live in it like a role playing game where you can actually decide the main characters decisions.
You are Fayt a skuld who is half human and half elf. He’s beautiful with long fiery red hair. There are about 8 choices you can make.
Fayt gets sent to a prison where it’s rough you can decide if you want to be with the warden or if you want to put your trust in a dark elf name Zeke or go crazy and go with the pirates. If you have a light your you can take your story to where it’s light and not as violent. If you make another choice some of what you read will be very dark such as abuse and rape not for the faint of hearts.
Even as you get towards the end you get to make more different choices. I just decided to read them all to know the different choices.
As someone who loves light stories as well as dark I was more interested in Fayt ending up with Zeke or Gil. Overall this book was sooooo different I mean I loved it.

**2.5** I decided half because it wasn't awesome, but it wasn't bad (especially taking into account that is a choose-your-own-adventure type of book, which is hard to do).

And I have made sure to actually read 100% of the book! It's a short read, so there's no really good character development. I will say the best character development was probably with

It's very fast-paced and not much actually happens. But for an interactive m/m novella, it was fun to pass the time with :)

For those who have read this/plan to read this, my first ending was Ending 2. What was yours?

Ok, I have to say that this was definitely stepping out of my comfort zone, but oh what a fun ride! This is the first time I’ve experienced an interactive story but I think TC Orton has created something fun! The imagery in this story is fantastic and really made it an experience. I also had a great time trying to make decisions for Fayt, what it would mean for his journey. This story can go dark but it can also be sweet, it all depends on the path you choose.

While this was a first for me, I don’t think it will be my last. I really enjoyed the fantasy, the characters and the twists. I have to admit that I few times I was worried about where my decisions would take me, but in my end, I was happy! Now we’ll see if I go back and mix things up for Fayt! This was an interesting and fun read and I’m definitely looking forward to checking out more from TC Orton!

NSFW Choose Your Own Adventure For The Win!
Finished my first (of likely very, very, many) passes through Iudicium and it was BRILLIANT.
I grew up reading choose your own adventure books. I read every path, then I'd reread my favorite paths over and over so when I heard that T.C. Orton was writing a choose your own adventure I was STOKED. He did NOT disappoint. I know he SLAVED over this book and likely tore some hair out constructing it...but it was perfect. I've only read the one path so far (no spoilers, get your own copy) but it was so much fun. SO MUCH FUN.
It was brilliant. <3 So brilliant. <3

Love, love, love it! This mm fantasy novella is unlike any book you have ever read in this genre and T.C. nailed it in its execution. I don't know if he's brilliant or mad to have taken on this project with all the work involved to pull this off, but I'm so happy he decided to take this chance! Oh, and why is it different, you ask? It's interactive and you get to decide which paths Fayt will take to try and survive and hopefully, escape Iudicium, a terrifying prison filled with orcs, elves, and the like. Thankfully, I chose a somewhat HEA ending on my first try, but of course, I'm diving right back in to see what else could be in store for poor Fayt. I can't recommend this book enough!

What an interesting book and concept the writing was good. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. The characters were well developed and thought out. There was humor, an island, prison, a warden, hot springs, Elves, a mountain and so much more in this book. You make chooses throughout the book and there are multiple endings so you can read it more than once and enjoy. There is more but you will need to read the book which I can recommend. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

I loved the idea of a choose-your-own-adventure novel! It's the first one I've read and I plan on reading it several times, choosing a different path each time!
Having the power to change Fayt's destiny makes this a book for everyone's taste, if you choose carefully that is 😉
TC Orton, you outdid yourself! Bravo!

In this book the reader have the possibility of choosing Fayt's fate, his experiences, his pairing and his ending. I liked it. Never thought I would find an interactive book, many reviews tell a little about each path they've choose but I haven't chosen any, and just scanned it all. I honestly couldn't help myself, for me it would be lacking and I wouldn't enjoy the book in its fullest potential. Surprising, I've discovered later I didn't need to pass it all, I would end up in ending I liked the most anyway. No regrets though. If I hadn't read all I would soon or later.

Before this book I had the privilege of playing novel-like-games which are just like this book, interactive allowing the reader choose the ending and who the MC is going to end up with: DRAMAtical Murder and Togainu no Chi, the second one there's a setting very similar to Iudicium. I reccommend for those who liked this experience.

What an inventive way of telling a story. I found it very entertaining. It was thrilling to see the outcome of the decisions I was making while reading.

The story itself goes in the darker side. Is this consider a romance? I really don’t know. It didn’t feel romantic at all despite the ending I got. But it didn’t make me enjoy it any less. Maybe it was because I wasn’t looking a romance when I choose to read the story. I loved the dark elements of it, it was exactly what I was looking for.

The main character is nice. I didn’t find him particularly charming but I loved to see the struggles he had with the abuses he was facing. I did have a few issues with some of his reactions, and I understand is fiction, but there are times when I prefer some things to be more realistic. I still had a great time reading it and I’m so intrigued by the author who was new to me. I’ll definitely plan on keep reading more of his books.

I would recommend to consider the note on the blurb and keep record of your choices, I had the need to go back a few times to remember what my choices had been. It was so exciting. I don’t know it this would be in all the possibilities the book has, but beware it could contain non-con scenes that might not be ok with all readers.
