Four years ago, Hunter Black went on active duty with the Marines. What he did for his country changed him. Seeing his buddies, men he'd fought alongside setting up their lives and settling down, he took a risk and returned home.
Piper Hill struggled to continue when Hunter had cut her out of his life with no explanation. Every time she sent him letters to tell him, they were returned to sender. Raising her son Sam alone, Piper moved on with her life, loving being a mother, but missing the other half of her.
War changes a man. His dreams, his reality, his existence. A majority of our military come home scarred inside and struggle to return to the civilian world. Learning from their friends in Piersville, Hunter and his friends establish an MC - Valiant. Using their training and military contacts, they assist the government with tackling the ongoing issues of human, drug and arms trafficking along North and South America. Those responsible are like the mythical Hydra; cut off one head and two replace it. War comes with a price – loss of life, PTSD, a changed body, a changed mind. Is valor enough to help them fight this battle?
I’m a British author who grew up all over the world. My parents were diplomats, so we were posted to all of the corners of the earth and it was a blast. Some wouldn’t seem so awesome if you heard about them, but my parents always made it a fun experience and it molded my brother and I into who we are today.
I live in Wiltshire in the west country of the UK. At random times of the day, I’ll hear a moo from the fields around me, or get a whiff of that…uhhh…’country air’, and I love it! I might not have grown up in the UK, but I’m a British girl to the bone (regardless of the suspicious whiffs coming in from the fields).
I’m a single mother with a son who is nearing his teenage phase. Maybe he’s reached it early? Who knows. But he’s awesome and has a personality and sense of humor that I can only attribute to my family. We’re slightly bonkers, we have a wicked sense of humor and we find the positives in every situation. I’m so proud to be his mum and to watch him grow and mature.
Writing was something that I’d always done. I had a teacher in the third grade who always set us the task of writing a story and making it into a book every weekend. After I left school, I kept this up and wrote as often as I could or just plotted out books. This evolved into me taking the plunge and publishing my first book in 2016 and I’ve been typing ever since.
I’m proud to be an Indie Author, and I absolutely love writing out my crazy Providence characters and the more complex ones in my other series’. It doesn’t matter if it’s romantic comedy or something with more suspense – so long as it has a HEA I’ll do it!
I’ve got so many more planned, so the best is yet to come.
This started out very strong. It was an action/romance which totally works for me.
Throughout the book, there was a point that I felt like I was reading two different stories.
Initially, it was so emotional and touching. I felt for the Hunter and Piper. Even little Sam was tugging at my heart strings. I love a surprise baby story as long as the mom tried to inform the dad- which she did. In the back of my mind, I kept thinking that she was also close with his parents, why didn't she try to contact them after they moved away, but that wouldn't have given us the drama. I was glad that she was forgiving, yet didn't let him completely off the hook immediately. After hearing about his ordeals, I felt for him and his state of mind. There was loads of facts and info on PTSD given.
Then, the action started. While it kept my interest, you had to practically take notes at all of the characters thrown at you. You had Hunter's guys, the the MC and even a cast of characters that I had a feeling maybe already had their own stories. While I know that it was introduction to at least one new series, it was a lot to take in. There was even a couple instances of points of view from secondary characters. Once I got a handle on all the names, it fell into place more.
I did appreciate that the hero and heroine were celibate during the separation. I also liked that the secondary characters were not manwhores and there were a couple blossoming romances in the works. (exception was the story of one of the secondary characters and his whoring ways that caused his wife to commit suicide- if he gets a story, not sure if I'll go there). I hope that it remains that way in future books.
-no cheating or ow/om drama -action packed - some fight scenes -NO EPILOGUE- I was so disappointed that we for no look into the future for this couple.
"Compass" is the story of Piper and Hunter, and is a second chance love story. When Hunter returns back to his first love after years of active duty and suffering from PSTD, he never expects the love of his life Piper would be waiting with him.. and a son Sam. How they reconcile and make sweet love, take down a kidnapping and child trafficking cartel, save a kidnapped heroine and reconnect with an estranged son forms the story. I really liked the cover hottie and the name/image of compass throughout the book. It was a sweet HQN-y love story, with action and occasional angst. Enjoyed it. Safe 3.5/5
Hunter Black and Piper Hill were the couple that everyone thought would never be separated, but when Hunter joined the Marines it changed him and he gave Piper up with no explanation. Hunter didn't know why Piper tried to get a hold of him relentlessly but he always believed she would move on, finding out she has a son, his son is a game changer. He needs to deal with his PTSD and the one thing he knows for sure is that he wants to help raise his son and the love for Piper has never wavered, he wants her back. However danger lurks and he has to get the help of his friends who are helping build their MC.
This was a great beginning to a new series. I felt for Piper, she had been burnt with Hunter but she also tried to understand his side as well. Had several intriguing characters, can't wait to read more in this series.
No cheating/have a tissue ready/beautiful ending/realistic/insightful/psychological work of art
I struggled with making my review because I felt so emotional after reading it. I love this author. She was the reason I gave other genres a chance. This book is so different to the Forever series but it doesn't make it worse; the book is my favourite to date. I was shocked at how serious it was and how deep it was. Mary went into ptsd deeply and the emotions she pulled from me----I cried hard on the train to work. Then on my break. Then on the way home. Then in bed when I read the book again.
Hunter served for his country but the ptsd stopped him coming home to piper. In that time she tries to let him know she was pregnant but he never read the letters. What I love is that hunter didn't have to prove himself with his todger while they were apart. He never looked at another woman. I also like that they worked through their relationship together, no instant forgiveness and unrealistic BS. The scenes with his son were tear jerkers but I loved them. What I loved and have the utmost respect for Mary for was her working through the ptsd process. You can't cure it, but you can work with it. I never knew that. It is so smartly done and then the end----I need Bo's book.
I love the author is putting real life into the book. The recollection it starts with I actually saw clear as day and I could smell the smoke. I loved this book badly and will sit in the garden reading it again this afternoon. Mary never ceases to amaze me with her growth/writing/brain/plots/extra details. She gets it each time
This is the first book I have read by this author and I can't wait for the next book in this series to come out. This book is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. To read a little bit about what our service men and women go through to keep us free is so sad. I was glad that in this book the H had a strong family that loved him even though he messed up. Also the other characters in this book have each others back in a fierce way. It was so good!!!
this was an interest read. it delves highly into ptsd and shows how the events that shaped a group of wounded warriors could help to continue to bind them into an mc brotherhood as a force working to rid the world of some of the worst humanity has to offer. it essentially is a 2nd chance romance but deals with the dark, dangerous and evil around us. i really liked all the characters. the writing style is quite good and the story sets up further books in the series.
*WARNING* intended for mature audiences Oh my gosh! Why would you end the book there?!?! I hope to the good lord above that the next one is out! Valiant seems to be a "broken men" club. These men suffer from all sorts of military PTSDs. They just need to find their reason to live again. This book TALKS about kidnapping, human trafficking, and rape, BUT it's mostly in the past tense and is not described. The characters are misunderstood, I think. The story is awesome! I can't wait to read the next one. I really don't like the cliffhanger ending though.
I live this book so much. I've read other books by this author, but none with the MC vibe. The way she builds up the characters is amazing and you very soon become immersed and invested in their lives. While this was more of a serious topic, the humour was still present and made the book flow.
Lost and found, that is what military souls are lost and found . This book is a dream i wish for all our military. The support of their remaining buddies male and female. The understanding of family and a job they understand. Love this book. Read them all.
Enjoyed the romance aspects of the story, and how the main characters learned to deal with challenging factors and situations whilst learning to trust each other and becoming a family
Something to keep in mind before going into this book is that there are a number of triggers such as PTSD and anxiety.
Safe, only with each other even during separation. This was a more serious then what I've previously read from this author. It was quite good. Even though I just couldn't agree with the H's actions in the past I like the story of the family unit once the reunited and am looking forward to more
This book had some good and promising parts, where the story could really take off and thrive it just didn't. I skipped past some parts and enjoyed other parts. Which makes this a 2-3 star book for me.
Interesting start to a new series. Piper and Hunter have been separated for 4 years while he was in the Marines. He comes home to find he has a son that he would have known about if he had read her letters.
I am new to this author and came across this book by accident when looking for another. Curious I Read the blurb and reviews and downloaded the sample. I have to say i am so glad that I did because this book was totally AWESOME!!. Hunter and Piper were high school sweethearts until he left to join the Marines which Piper supported him on. On his first mission where he had to kill he decided that Piper deserves so much more than a man who is tainted by war. So he ignored every letters she sent him and returned them back to her unopened. Little did he know that in every single letter she sent was of her telling him of her pregnancy and pictures of their baby boy which he didnt know he had until on his last mission and suffering from severe PTSD and 4 years later he and a group of men from his unit moved back to his home town to set up home and form a new MC which they named VALIANT. And when he and his men went to a bar to have a few drinks where she worked, theirs eyes met and she turned her back on him and left the bar. If you want to know more buy it now!!. These are a group of men and women each suffering in their own way by War but when the MC formed along with help from other MC's they are determine to use their particular skills to help those in need. Loved it and cant wait for Noah and Bo's book next.
Hunter makes some mistakes and because of them he misses out on time with his son he knew nothing of and Piper the woman he still loves whom he left out in the cold thinking he was protecting her because of his PTSD. Poor Hunter struggles every night and now is medically discharged from the military and he has joined and MC that is all military guys like him, some suffering from PTSD.
His night back in town he goes to his ex's family bar and wonders why upon seeing hi she runs out. Piper she was a single mother for three years to there son, she wrote letters to Hunter with them all being returned to her without being opened. She has the help of her parents and is almost doing okay until the reappearance of Hunter.
I loved that this story was not too much drama between the main characters and there was no om/ow drama. There is some drama but not between the couple. Hunter and his MC brothers are sent on a mission to stop child trafficking that was the only drama and the one at the end. Which I'm sure will continue in another book.
Oh my days!! I have read and loved the Providence Series by this author (long live the #UnicornWhisperer!) so I was super excited to see she had a new book out. Compass is Book one in the Valiant MC series and my heart was smashed by the third chapter! Hunter and Piper were childhood sweethearts, so in love and when Hunter joined the Marines to serve and protect his country, Piper vowed to be there for him. War changed him, making him believe he wasn't good enough for Piper, so he distanced himself...........four years later he finds himself back, discovering just how much he has missed. This is so much more than a second chance at love.......this is two soul mates reconnecting. My heart!......I was scooping it off the floor by chapter three whilst wiping the tears away! I cannot wait to read more from this series and this author! Go one click it now!!
This story was a good read. Trouble is I read Force Projection (Knights MC) before I read this book. At least I knew who the charactors were and had to re-read parts from the MC book. My heart goes out to all veterans who suffer PTSD and any other injuries they have to endure when they get home. U get a view of what Hunter and Piper were to each other back in High School. Piper went thru giving birth and raising Sam (their son) on her own, but she did have her parents. Piper didn't understand why he sent all her letters back when he was overseas fighting in the war. So it's up to Hunter when he see's her again and finds out he has a son to try to make her understand where his mind was at at the time. There's a lot going on in this book, with drugs, kidnapping, slave trade of small children and adult females.
Really loved this beginning of a new series. Really enjoyed Piper and Hunter. This book had a really good storyline, angst, hot sex scenes and amazing characters. We even get a glimpse of some people from her other series. I love when an author intertwines characters from other series and books it's like visiting with old friends. Cannot wait for the next installment to this series. And if you have read other books by Mary B Moore this is way off the grid of her others. You are definitely NOT getting glittering unicorns with this one. Huge fan of whatever Mary writes, so keep them coming. And whom doesn't love a sexy alpha male riding a motorcycle?? Not this gal that's for sure!! Thanks Jamie Nibarger Ellis
I really enjoyed this book , it didn’t focus too much on the Piper and Hunter’s past which I liked. Some books do that and I’m glad this one didn’t as I think it would have slowed down the pace. I'm no expert but I thought it handled the subject of PTSD well in the relationship and loved that Piper was written as a strong character.
The story focused on the present, had a lot of action / suspense and set the scene for what looks to be a great series.
This book has it all, coming from a different perspective it shines! Go alpha hero men. I loved this book and would highly recommend it. This is the first book I've read from Moore and look forward to reading more of this great story telling. Action packed. So, hold on to your seats your in for a bumpy ride.
An amazing read by Mary b Moore hunter has seen a lot and goes through a lot in this book but it's written so well and makes you realise that a lot of people in real life go through what he does. It's emotional and heartbreak but it's all so worth it. I couldn't put it down once I started.
So love reading these novel's....what an amazing author.... they bring a smile...and tiers to your eyes...as soon as you start reading you don't want to put them down until you've finished.....cant wait for all the other books to be released
