What is the fascination with ghosts? Maybe it is because people want to know the answer to the big question, "Is there life after death?" Maybe it is because some people have longings to see loved ones with whom they feel their lives were cut short, or they didn't get a chance to say goodbye. Maybe their friends or loved ones died before they could make amends for something that caused them to no longer be on good terms. People love things they cannot explain, and the existence of ghosts can neither be proven nor disproved regardless of the time and money spent trying. A lot of people believe because they so desperately want to believe that their loved ones are waiting around to take care of them or even waiting on them to die so they can accompany them to the great beyond. Cemeteries are places where people go to communicate with the dead. This is probably the reason that so many cemeteries are "haunted." Haunted cemeteries can be found all across the United States. Some of these cemeteries have interesting histories that explain how and why they are haunted. Some are just eerie, and some are downright terrifying. There are even some stories that are kind of sweet. This book covers five hundred cemeteries. That is an average of ten per state, but in truth some sates, like Delaware and Hawaii, are haunted, just not in the cemeteries. California has 26 haunted cemeteries covered in this book, but the relatively small state of Massachusetts has 23 haunted cemeteries. There are 359 photographs throughout the book. Some are of particular headstones related to the story, and some are of the cemetery itself. There are also 139 links to youtube and vimeo videos, and many links created by paranormal investigators. Perhaps you would like to check out some haunted cemeteries yourself. If so, an alphabetical list sorted by the cemetery's name with the GPS coordinates listed next to it can be found at the end of the book. Some of the coordinates are not exact because some of the really old cemeteries are hard to locate. You will probably need the help of locals to actually find them. Some are even off limits without prior permission since they are on private property. There is even one that has a complete ban on visitors because the soil is contaminated with arsenic and dioxins. I hope you enjoy this book. Maybe it will help you find a haunted cemetery near you.
The Phantom Phonebook: A Directory of Vague Cemetery Haunts Across America
Haunted Cemeteries Across America is a decent resource if you're traveling across the U.S. and want to check out haunted cemeteries. The best part of the book is the index with location coordinates, which is very helpful for finding the cemeteries. However, the stories are quite vague, and a quick internet search could provide most of the same information for each state. It's unfortunate that it's not available in print, as it would be a useful reference to have on the road. I was surprised to see that Cincinnati's Spring Grove Cemetery wasn’t included—it's easily, though perhaps unknowingly, one of the top 3 haunted cemeteries in the U.S.
I usually don't read about cemeteries around the country unless they are very famous but this was very good. If I get the chance to travel, I would like to visit a few of these.
