Hidden in the bottom of a roadside ditch as a baby, Evangel is only steps away from her viciously murdered parents. An old hermit finds her there a day later and takes her to his home in the heart of a sylvan wilderness. She is raised in a hermitage built by Matthew where he learns she is touched by a rare spiritual power. 17 years later a series of miracles occur that rock the very nature of her reality. Befriended by outlaws and a king’s champion, she is also betrayed by a woman of the cloth during a bard of the realm’s performance. That night, in a dream, Evangel envisions her future soul mate, Pall Warren, on a battlefield of death, and casts a prayer of protection around him. Thus begins a remarkable journey to save herself and those who believe in her. A hauntingly beautiful and startling tale of wonder.
Keith lives in Swansea, Massachusetts. He has an abiding love and passion for the visual, literary and performing arts. At an early age he started playing the classical guitar and studying privately with Maestro Joseph Raposo, Sr. (Boston Conservatory of Music) until he was 17. He started writing poetry in high school. Reading, music, storytelling and movies became singular passions for him, all of which set him on a lifelong path of exploration in creativity. In the spring of 2014, he began thinking in earnest about what life would be like in the future. Given the fact that civilization would be intact, what would people 500 years from now be like? How would technology change them? What effect would mankind’s aggressive personality traits and competitive, warlike spirit have on the ever spiraling rush toward scientific mastery over the universe? How much would the practice of scientism affect, even replace, religion as we know it today?
Starting on May 23rd until October 9th of that year, he sat down at his computer on a daily basis and began writing a science fiction/fantasy/thriller about the quest for human immortality that plays itself out in the 26th century. This website helps introduce readers to this chronicle and it represents Keith’s ongoing journey in writing about it.
Set in a world reminiscent of middle ages, this ambitious, deeply intricate speculative fiction thriller series, the first trilogy of a nine-book series by Carreiro brings together an unlikely band of heroes on a quest to unravel evil breaking out in their land.
In the first installment of the trilogy, Pall Warren, the member of an elite unit whose vanguard was sent against a coalition of raiders invading the country, wakes up after a head wound and realizes he is the sole survivor after the bloody combat. Unable to recall anything about his past, he forms an uneasy bond with an enigmatic bowman, John Savage, and the two set on a journey to unravel the evil breaking out around them.
The second installment sees 17-year-old Evangel, the future soulmate of Pall, coming to terms with her new identity after a series of miracles rock the very nature of her reality.
The third installment takes Pall to the port city of Seascale. With the realm of West Fundlund coming under attack by the renegade priest Kosem Mungadai, a thaumaturge of the 13th level in the occult arts, Pall finds himself in the middle of a bloody war with evil unleashing chaos everywhere.
Carreiro’s prose is crisp, narrative fluid, and he devotes special attention to sketching his characters, showing how they are affected by the events unfolding around them. Pall is driven by twin imperatives—his need to unravel his past and learn who he is in reality and his quest to discover the truth behind war and evil taking over the land. John Savage, the man shrouded in mystery, remains wholly intriguing. Evangel shines throughout.
Pall’s backstory is revealed through flashbacks, and it’s through Pall and Evengel’s stories that Carreiro brings insight and understanding to ways that regular people respond to the unfolding of evil. Though bloody wars rupture at regular intervals, Carreiro’s tale is steeped more firmly in the intrigues of individual struggles, interpersonal clashes, and power politics.
Packing in an epic’s worth of backstory and emotions, this impressive series argues that even the most brutal monster battles are less harrowing than the clash between hope and cynicism and faith and disbelief within a person’s soul and how courage, strength of arms, and the blessings of love can not only endure but also overcome the corrupting power of destructive forces.
This trilogy will ignite readers’ fervor for the next trilogy in the series.
I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own. This book far exceeded my expectations, I loved the premise when I read it. The characters are so well developed. It is extremely believable. I love both Matthew and Evangel. Their spiritual growth and strength are what you want to read about in a book like this. At one point, Evangel sees a wolf give birth. The mother and all but three of the pups die. She takes the pups home where she and Matthew raise them. It was at this point as the story began to unfold I was reminded of C.S. Lewis' "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe". The wolves had a role I had not foreseen which made this so endearing. I really don't want to say too much. I had not read the first book in this series. I did purchase it because I loved this one so much and I wanted to find out what came before. This one reads as a stand-alone book, so if you have not read the first one you will be pulled in from the very first page. I had not heard of this author before. I will definitely recommend this book to others
Part I of the Penitent was truly amazing!! Part II is even better! New characters are introduced, and the plot thickens...I am looking forward to a Part III...Part II keeps you suspended...Excellent book!

From an early age, Evangel's life has never been the same. Saved from an uncertain fate by a hermit, she's grown up to embrace the powers lurking deep inside her. Though she's kept most of what she can do a secret, she knows it won't be long until someone becomes aware of what makes her so unique. Try as she might, she struggles to make sense of what she sees and does. When an unexpected vision shows her a future she knows will come to fruition, she vows to do everything to save the man who holds the keys to her own heart.
A wonderful addition to the Immortality Wars series, The Penitent: Part II catapults us into the circumstances surrounding Evangel's existence. This is a girl who's had to contend with so much from an early age. She lost her parents, though by the grace of God, she was saved by the loving hermit, Matthew. Since then, he's done his best to be the parent she's never had.
Evangel struggles to assert herself throughout everything she sees and does. Her view of the world is an innocent one. At times, it's a little naive. She's come to believe there's goodness in everyone no matter what it is they made do within the lives they lead. That way of thinking is shattered, however, when she witnesses an attempt made on Matthew's life. Despite the fact that she's dealing with so much, she refuses to see the world in black and white. Most especially when it comes to holding the lives of those she loves in the palm of her hand.
I love the fact that A. Keith integrates a few events from book one into book two. We get to see more of Pall's plight as he struggles to survive. The fact that Evangel and Pall's lives are so closely intertwined makes the bond they share between them more palpable and definitely much stronger. These are two people who believe in what they do. They'll do anything to make sure every objectives they undertake are fulfilled, no matter the cost.
Evangel and Pall may have a lot on their plates, but I've a feeling they'll continue to do what's right. The Most High has chosen them to do their bidding by any means necessary. There's more than meets the eye for them, a fact the two of them have come to acknowledge every step of the way. They've been given a second chance, one they refuse to do away with so easily. How things will play out for them and those they come across is hard to say. Nevertheless, I can't wait to see what happens next in book three.
The Penitent: Part II follows Evangel Blessingvale/Greatworth and the revelation of the Risen One.
Evangel is saved as a child by Matthew Greatworth, the hermit she calls grandfather. Now seventeen, she is touched by a rare spiritual power when their home is attacked by the Dread Rovers and Matthew is tortured. Evangel is faced with opposition from the Priory when news of her miraculous meeting with The Risen One spreads, as the religion has long been outlawed in the country--on pain of death.
The Christian themes are presented much more clearly in this part, with the obvious Risen One as the Christ figure. Part 2 moves forward more fluidly too--there are fewer flashbacks as Carreiro focuses on the current events of miraculous salvation, changed lives and spreading of the good news.
There isn't much interlinkage between Part 1 and 2--you can almost read them as standalone stories--as the only mention of anything from Part 1 comes in the last two chapters when Evangel has a vision of Pall Warren.
There's a coming Part 3 which should round out the story, but I'm not quite sure what's the status of that.
Note: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
