The Silver Fox

Rate this book
Her greatest secret might save his life.

Dr. Kriloff’s blond companion was a slender female fashion refugee so horrible looking that pity was Audubon’s first reaction. She huddled in Kriloff’s shadow, a notepad clutched in her pale hands, her eyes fastened firmly on the carpeted floor. Her hair was thick, straight, and raggedly chopped off at the shoulder. It was parted with all the straightness of a lightning bolt and hung in front of her glasses on one side, hiding one eye like a limp, half-shut curtain.

The glasses were large, with ugly, black frames and green-tinted lenses easily a quarter-inch thick. She wore a dingy, gray dress suit that belonged on a woman four sizes larger and several inches taller, though this woman was taller than average. Between the jacket’s wide lapels, he could see a sliver of a round-necked, white blouse of some coarse material

She never moved and never looked up. Her skirt puffed out around her skinny calves as if she were standing over an air grate. And her shoes were matronly, black pumps with wide heels and straps across the insteps. The woman could go hiking in those shoes.

“Who is she?” Audubon put a hand on his hostess’s arm and brought them to a stop a dozen feet from the Kriloff group. “The blonde.”

“His secretary.” The hostess covered her mouth and whispered sideways, “Isn’t she awful looking? That gray bag makes her into a skinny-legged pigeon. Why in the world would Dr. Kriloff allow a member of his entourage to make such a terrible impression? People can barely keep from gawking at her. Thank goodness she doesn’t speak English. At least she won’t be hurt if she overhears a critical remark.”

“Introduce me to her.”

"The Silver Fox and the Red-Hot Dove" is the story of Elena and T.S. Audubon.

Another great story by DS, and honestly, I am very hooked!

Our hero is T.S. Audubon, the owner of Audubon multi-million dollar company, and ally to government operations. During one of his parties with the Russians, his gaze clashes with the extremely shy and "ugly" secretary of the conniving Kriloff, and he demands to be introduced to her.
Whisking her away to dance, he is intrigued by her false demeanor yet sharp glances, and as she is pulled away by her boss, he realizes he wants to know more. As she escapes from Kriloff's clutches, Audubon chases her, and ultimately flies her away to his isolated sanctuary.
But many secrets are yet to be discovered. Why do flowers bloom and all ailments disappear when Elena comes near? Why is Audubon so secretive about his past? Is he really going to betray her?
With our heroine vying for her much craved freedom, and two governments on her trail, a happy ending is not expected by anyone.
However, as time passes Elena and Audubon end up finding love in each other. But with everything going against them, can trust really be a part of it?

Another great read in this series with lots of thrilling mystery, a fast paced plot, gut-wrenching angst, swooning romance with paranormal elements and what a sweet HEA. I love the selflessness of the characters, and the ability to love and sacrifice in them.

I'm also glad we got to know more about Elgiva and Douglas (and their epilogue!).

The dove found happy ending with her fox :)

Deborah never disappoints me. Her pencil or her hands, which press the keys with perfect speed, are simply divine. In short, her stories are magnificent. I give the book all five beautiful stars because of the emotions I've experienced. I experienced with the characters and joy, and grief, and fear, and shame, and embarrassment, and excitement, and love, and passion, and pain, finally and happiness. The plot of the story is far from simple, let's just say magical. The main characters both liked, especially the sincerity of their feelings. Their empathy for each other is something. With enjoyment, read their relationship development. Smith is one of the rare authors who writes relationship development in no trivial way, but uses interesting ways. There isn't a single boring word in the book I will say. I also liked the way they call each other and their symbolism. After all, agree silver fox and red dove symbolizes a beautiful, but at the same time strange couple. My imagination is something overheated rn ... I do not want to read another book, just want to restart this gold ... PS: Why didn't we learn Audubon's name at the end after all. His last name, however, pretty .

Taking some time during COVID-19 "safer at home" to reread some old saved books from years ago before I decide if they're leaving the house.
