Sayar Min Luu is known for his comedy and I have to say he don't disappoint. The books follows the narrator which I believe to be Sayar Min Luu himself, recount about a peculiar friend he has, and all the episodes that the friend seemingly shared with him.

Sein Kyaung is a kid who was born into a poor family in the rural parts of Myanmar, whose dad happened to be a revolutionary in his own right foreseeing that without giving his kids a modern education there was no hope for the family. So they sold all the farmland they had in the country and moved to the city of Rangoon to start a new life as a family of milk merchants. Sein Kyaung's life was arduous from the very beginning, something akin to William Stoner's childhood from his famous novel stoner. Although he had the opportunity to go to a state school in the city, whenever he was home he had to help out the family business. These include feeding and milking cows, transporting the milk to various teashops around Rangoon, competing with the local, predominantly Indian milk merchants. For him the school was a refuge of sorts, a place where he can forget about the hard labor of a Rangoon milk merchant, at least for a time.

His life started there, but would blossom into something more. He was a natural businessman and a great talker even as child. The whole book chronologically follows his life, episodes of him using these natural gifts to survive and thrive in the harsh, competitive Burmese city that never sleeps. It's always satisfying to see him improving as a businessman, outsmarting his competitors, making bigger deals as he gains age and wisdom. A tinge of comedy is always sprinkled in these episodes, making it a light-hearted read masking a few poignant life lessons that Sayar Min Luu wants to express through the character of Sein Kyaung.

The only reason I'm giving it a 3 star is because of a chapter that didn't sit right with me. Near the end of the book, Sein Kyaung goes through a character arc where he starts to forget his roots and begin to treat condescendingly to his friends and peers. I thought this narrative was interesting and I wanted to see it done justice. Sadly it was undone in the next chapter, with a couple of throw away lines from Sein Kyaung expressing his repentance for his mistakes. This to me felt like Deus Ex Machina. A character development that happened offscreen could be done better by a writer at the caliber of Sayar Min Luu yet the book was rushed to a comedic ending which left a bad taste in my mouth. It was a great book nonetheless, just not as great as ငှက်ကလေး.

ဤစာအုပ်ကလေးကတော့ မဆိုးဘူးဟုဆိုနိုင်သည်၊ သို့သော် အပျော်ဖတ်ပဲကောင်း၏။ အရေးအသား အဖွဲ့အနွဲ့အရရော ဇတ်လမ်းအရရော သိပ်စွဲမက်စရာမတွေ့မိ။ သို့သော် မင်းလူ၏ ထူးခြားချက်တခုမှာ သူ့စာအုပ်များ၏ အပိတ်၊ ဇတ်အသိမ်းတွင် အလွန်ပိရိပြီး တော်လွန်းခြင်းဖြစ်၏။ ဖတ်ပြီးသွားချိန်တွင် တချက်ပြုံးသွားစေ၊ တခုခံစား‌သွားစေနိုင်သည့်ဟာမျိုးကို တိတိပပပေးလေသည်။
