FINALIST, 2017 Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Competition / “AN EXCELLENT BOOK…YOU WON'T WANT TO PUT IT DOWN!”
A MAN SEARCHES DESPERATELY FOR THE WOMAN HE LOVES…AND A BRUTAL LEADER CRUSHES ALL WHO OPPOSE HIM 980 A.D. The massive man Tor travels on a Viking trading ship, searching for a wife abducted by brutal slavers. His two children travel with him—kept in hiding because of the fortune in gold their dark skin would bring.
Tor’s search brings him to Iceland—where a treacherous merchant, a young widow with a secret, and a cruel headman force him towards a terrible choice. Is it possible to protect those he loves…or has he led them into disaster?
“A sound came to Tor’s ears: the falcon’s powerful cry of loneliness and defiance during the night of terrible darkness. Strength swelled in him, a tide of fearlessness far more powerful than Naldrum’s vicious attack. ‘Not this time,’ Tor heard himself mutter. ‘Not this time.’”
We all dream, don't we? We work so hard, and hope that each book reader leads to another and another, and that one day our book, our beloved project, will reach our goal.
For most of us, the goal is not a dream of fame. It is simply about doing a good enough job to earn recognition from our peers and from readers - the people we exist to serve.
For some of us, it is to simply be published. For others it is the joy of having our work read. Fo many of us - and this includes me - it is to earn enough from our writing to earn enough income to pay our bills.
I want to earn my living as a writer of novels.
Before and beyond that, I want to accomplish good, quiet stuff in my life. I want to work on peace, on the environment, art, aging well. I want to be a good mom...a really, really good mom, because it's the most important thing...and a good partner to my husband.
I believe we should question everything. I'm committed to believing in the possible. I love to think about universal constants.
I believe that that kindness requires much more strength and is far more effective than self-righteousness, and that true good triumphs over evil because it's just so darned much harder to do...and that’s what makes it stronger.
I believe that truth is harder to tell than fiction, but that good fiction, well-written, tells truths in ways we might otherwise not make time or attention for. I believe that humor and music are two of the most powerful forces of change we have. Music touches us more deeply. Humor is faster.
And in case all this sounds just too too serious, I freakin' love to dance.
Katie Aiken Ritter did it again and produced a gem! I may be a little biased about the subject of everything ‘Viking’, knowing that my roots are in people who walked right next to the characters that Katie brings to life, but anybody who loves a satisfyingly good story that is so well researched that it could be non-fiction, will love the writing by Katie Aiken Ritter. As her first novel, “Viking: The Green Land”, this one pulls you into the story from the first few sentences and then you will not want to put it down. The characters are well developed and believable, full of real blood, flesh and feelings, and I am very much looking forward to learning where they are all going. I hope we won’t have to wait too long! Kudos for the cover as well!
I enjoy history and I have wondered if blacks had found their way among the most northerners as free or slaves. I believe that this is a fictional character but was an interesting read. Wished more of this story that consist of Thor's children and his existence under his last owner.
Always wondered how traveled blacks had been through out the ages of time and more historical as well as fictional books are being published in less negative way. I enjoy reading about them.
The story is great... Compelling to say the least! But once again you leave me wanting to know more! I found this one and read it before finding Viking the Green Land... I only have it 4 stars because it ended before was ready ! Otherwise it's a 5 star story! Thank you Katie... I'm waiting for more!!
It was definitely nice to see a little bit of representation of the extensive trade and travel during the viking age illustrated by the character of Tor and his children.
