Bestselling thriller author Natalie Cooper has a crippling case of writer’s block. With her deadline looming, she finds the only way she can write is by ditching her laptop and reverting back to pen and paper. But the story which flows from the pen is not just another work of fiction.
Unbeknown to her, a gang of powerful and deadly criminals will stop at nothing to prevent the book being written.
Will Natalie manage to finish the story and expose the truth before it’s too late? Or could the only final chapter she faces be her own?
Natalie Cooper is an author who suddenly finds herself with an author's worst nightmare .. writer's block.
Her loving husband suggests doing something different to get those juices flowing again. She goes back to pen and paper and sits herself down on the sofa. Of course, she does what most of us do ... she falls asleep.
When she wakes, she finds that she has written a chapter. But this is not a work of fiction. And when police show up asking her about her characters, she finds that these are real people.
Natalie comes to believe that the story is actually being written by a murder victim and he wants the world to know what happened to him and why.
And now there are people who will stop at nothing to keep that story from being published ... before the final chapter is written.
This is not your usual ghost story ... no strange moans and sounds of chains. No sightings of ghosts or goblins. Not being a huge fan of ghost stories, I appreciate these things.
The story premise is a good one. The characters are solid .. well, sort of. There is suspense and a bit of drama. There are fires and car 'accidents' and break ins. Kept me turning page after page.
This is a novella ... under 150 pages.
Many thanks to the author who shared the digital copy of this most interesting story. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
I am a big fan of this authors novels so as soon as I saw she had another book out I had to read it.
Ghost Writer is a novella and I read it in one sitting. I loved the whole story line of a writer who is struggling to meet her dead line as she can't think of anything to write. Following her husbands advice of reverting back to writing with pen and paper seems to work. Only problem is that Natalie can't remember writing it.
This was such a fun packed read. For a short story this book packs a lot of punches and had me literally on the edge of my seat. If you haven't yet read the authors books then highly recommend trying this one as I am sure it will have you racing off to read the rest of her work.
Never heard of the author, she seems like a prolific serial writer. This was a freebie meant to pass some time in a semi entertaining fashion and that it did, about 70 minutes of it. It read like it didn't take that much longer to write either. There was a professional slickness to it, like an easily dispatched quickie about an author who puts out 14 books in 3 years probably using the same methods and achieving the same quality, average. It's a wham bam thank you m'am action thriller, perfectly mindless sort of read. There isn't enough there to warrant a proper comprehensive review. Entertaining enough, though, just barely.
I don't usually read ghost stories, but on seeing this book's beautiful cover and reading the intriguing blurb I thought it was so original that I lost no time in downloading a copy.
Forget ghost stories where ethereal forms pass through walls and closed doors scaring the crap out of some poor chap or where creepy dolls come to life at night with blazing eyes. The 'ghost' in this book makes its presence known in a very creative, unusual way.
Natalie Cooper is a bestselling author who is currently suffering from writer's block. Whatever she does, nothing seems to spark her imagination back to life. Until one day after dozing off over her open notebook, she's amazed to find she has actually written something. It's the first chapter of a new book and a good one at that, but there's a problem... Natalie doesn't remember writing a word. Strange!
This happens more than once and little by little quite a disturbing story, whose main character is a journalist named Ryan, starts to take shape in her notebook. Natalie is gobsmacked and intrigued to see how the story will develop. But soon strange things start to happen to Natalie and her husband. It's as though someone is trying to scare them off. Somehow, unknowingly she has upset some dangerous individuals. But who? And why? Could this possibly have anything to do with the story she's writing? But why would anyone be irked by a fiction book? Who is really writing the book?
I don't wish to say any more as this is a short story and I don't want to spoil it to anyone. I'll just say that Natalie and her husband go to hell and back before THE END in both Natalie's and this book is reached.
Being a fast-paced, suspenseful novella, I read this book fairly quickly, and I thought it was brilliant. I wanted to know how it will all end. What would happen to Natalie and her husband and what message was the Ghost Writer trying to convey. Who was behind all the mishaps happening to them? And more importantly who was the Ghost Writer?
The author's writing is fluid and crisp making this an even more delightful read. All characters are true to life and the dialogue realistic. I loved the whole idea behind the book. The ending left me a bit sad maybe, but on the whole I really enjoyed reading this clever novella and I find no problem in recommending it. Well done!
Natalie is a successful author who is stuck on her new book. After struggling with it for some time, she finds a chapter she has written , apparently in her sleep. On a talk show later, she tells a bit of the story and then the police show up at her door. Her story is really happening. Suspenseful and full of twists, I REALLY enjoyed it.
I love this author's work, I was so excited to see that she'd released a new story that i bought it and started reading it ASAP.
What a fabulous read it was too. Bestselling author Natalie develops writer's block, not what you need to suffer from when there is an important deadline looming. She tries everything to discover her writing mojo again but nothing works. Exhausted she falls asleep with her notebook and pen in her hand. When she wakes up she finds a complete chapter has been written, has someone played a joke on her while she slept or is there something far more sinister afoot?
You'll just have to read it and see. Best novella I've read by a long shot.
This novella is a gripping and entertaining read that you won't want to put down. I read it in more or less one sitting as I needed to know what was going on!
Best selling author Natalie has a deadline to meet...and a bad case of writer's block. She can't find inspiration anywhere and ends up falling asleep with her notebook and pen in hand. When she wakes, there's a whole chapter written in her notebook and she has no recollection of writing it. Little does she know this is the beginning of a frightening adventure for her and her husband!
I totally recommend this novella for anyone who likes a fast paced thriller with a touch of supernatural thrown in! Five shiny stars for Netta Newbound!
A top read novella, and just what I needed for today's rainy, stay-at-home kind of day. I zoomed through it in one sitting, loving the idea of a story within a story. Don't discount shorter stories; the characters were interesting and it was a pacy, thrilling read.
Ghost writer by Netta Newbound. Natalie Cooper is a thriller writer. She is writing her new book. But nothing comes. She even tries changing her office to see if that helps. But nothing. So she gets her notepad and pen and sits down in her armchair. Soon she is asleep. When she wakes there is chapter 1 written in her notepad. How did this happen? This was a fantastic read with brilliant characters. What a twister of a read. Very cleverly written. This is a must read and I would highly recommend this book. Definitely worth more than 5*.
I enjoyed this book tremendously. A totally different read in which the author in the book is suffering from writers block but someone on the spirit side uses her to tell his story. I love this author's work which never fails to transport me into a different world.
wow what a brilliant read....I was recommended to read this book and I'm so glad I was ....It's really good. It's the first book I've read by Netta Newbound and not my last. Very well written and it pulled me very quickly ..... I recommend this book great read xx
Great little novella, read it in one go and really enjoyed it. Netta Newbound is fast becoming one of my favourite authors, looking forward to the next one.
An entertaining read from start till end. I could figure out the twist but it doesn't take much from the story's thrill quotient. I enjoyed it. You can read my complete view on the book by clicking on the following link: Ghost Writer
A short and easy read. The story isn't really complex, but there were a few scenes where I tensed my muscles and hoped people I liked were okay. Newbound's writing style worked well enough to attach decently to characters who only show a short time. For a change we get a helpful cop too who actually adds to the story. It's not something that hasn't been done before, but the story was still an enjoyable and easy read since the characters worked well and the writing was fine
When Natalie a writer with a deadline to reach hits a blindspot in her writing, she finds herself caught up in a darker story., but this story is about to lead Natalie and her husband Steve down a dangerous path. When things start to happen they choose to flee to Scotland to find a safe haven..but someone is following in their wake., its not just this couple in danger.Realising they have no choice but to return home..things become even darker for them as events take a sinister turn.As the story progresses the past crashes into the present..Everything starts to fall into place..Having read most of this authors works I had no idea what to expect from this novella .From the moment I picked this book up I knew I wouldn't be able to put it down..This little novella is dark, twisty and superb .Absolutely Spellbinding. An Amazing writer
“Ghost Writer” as a profession unfairly has a negative impression attached to it through no fault of the writer. Instead, a large segment of the population considers the person who hires the ghostwriter to be a cheat. In the case of non-fiction, the employer is considered lazy as in the case of a former President of the US publishing accounts of wartime experiences to an audience that largely believed the author was the President. In the case of fiction, the employer may be viewed as a clever business person but one claiming an unfair reputation as a writer. This is not the case with Natalie, our writer protagonist in Ghost Writer by Netta Newbound.
Natalie was facing writer's block. As a successful writer of fourteen published novels, she had expectations of continued productivity. She was on a roll. She also felt an obligation to her editor, something her husband did not agree with. Steve felt the editor worked for Nat; struggling writers will love this point. To get past the writer’s block, Nat used many tools in the writer toolbox. Vary the time of writing, move a desk around to get a window view, use a different medium for writing (pen and pencil vs. electronic means), and the ultimately, just take a short break. Nothing Natalie tried worked but there was a surprising unintentional input. After taking a nap, she woke up to a completed handwritten chapter of a potential book. The ghostwriter had appeared, unpaid and unsolicited.
Ryan Coultard was the small-time journalist protagonist in Chapter One of the ghostly input. Natalie transcribed the handwritten input onto her iPad making minor editorial revisions. As expected, the appearance of such material became a central discussion point between Nat and Steve. Natalie appeared on a national chat show and confirmed she was writing a new novel based on character Ryan Coultard. She was quite surprised to receive a visit from police in her home wanting to question her about the disappearance of Ryan, a person Nat was sure existed only in her head and evidenced only by the appearance of almost three completed chapters after naps. Nat and Steve discussed this at length, once during a drive that did not go well. Just after the car crash but before the police arrived and while Nat was feeling woozy, Ryan addressed her and urged her to publish the book as soon as possible. Reality and Dream State are colliding.
It seems the crash was not an accident. Neither was a firebombing of her home. Or the kidnapping of her brother. The novella races on through a series of events to figure out what is going on. Can there be a rationalization of a story that involves otherworldly intervention in the real world? The reader can decide as various factions: the police, the bad guys, Nat and Steve, interact in a race to publish a novel that might hurt important people. How would the sourcing be verified?
This is an interesting short read, a novella, which can provide a good “downtime” quick read. Those facing writer’s block will like it. Fantasy fans will enjoy it. The writing is fast-paced. I think characters are as well developed as possible in such a short presentation. And there is a surprise ending. Watch for this. There is a point when you might think you have reached the conclusion of the novel. Read a bit further.
This was a very enjoyable paranormal mystery novella. The main character, Natalie Cooper, is an author with a large following of her mystery novels. However, the pending publication of the 15th novel she's written in the past years, she finds herself in unfamiliar territory -- she has writer's block. No matter what she tries, the words don't come and the pages stay blank. Finally, her husband suggests she set down in front of the TV in the living room with a pad and pencil and just relax, watch some TV, and see if that doesn't get her creative juices flowing. Of course, what happens is what happens to most all of us when we are overtired and feeling depressed -- she falls asleep. When her husband checks on her later, he asks if things are better. She tells him no, she didn't write a thing, but there in front of her, he finds a notebook with several pages in her handwriting. She has no memory of writing them. As she reads over the notes, it's a good story. Still, the next day, the writer's block is still in place. Once again she tries the TV in the living room approach and once again, she falls asleep, just to awake to another chapter written. This goes on for a while, until her agent books her on a popular morning talk show. When asked about her newest work-in-progress, she talks about the new story, complete with names of characters.
From here, things begin to get strange. The police want to talk to her about the disappearance of a real life person whose story is oddly similar to the story she is writing. Even worse, she is warned by someone to stop her research into the matter, and when she doesn't, things take a violent turn.
How is she getting this story, which so many people believe to be a true story, among them people who would stop at nothing to be sure she doesn't finish the book.
This was so many things - a proper ghost story, a proper mystery, a thriller, and a quick and fun read. The characterizations were fully fleshed out. The plotting and pacing flowed easily. The editing was good, but there were a couple of "oops" in the proofing department, and, as this is just a short novella, that cost the book a star. At 117 on my Kindle: "The back door banged and I heard, Steve kick his shoes off and stomp into the kitchen." There was no need for the comma after the word 'heard.' That should have jumped out at any proofreader. The other was at location 1267: He nodded. "All bar the final chapter." Unless someone can prove to me that "bar" means "but" in UK slang, that is another proofing error that should have jumped off the page. I'm the world's worst proofreader, so if I see them, any paid proofreader should have seen them.
But, those things don't bother most readers, and I understand that. Go download the book and read it. You'll like it.
Natalie wanted to tell a scary story, but Ryan had a scary story to tell.
Ghost Writer is a thrilling tale of murder, mystery, and betrayal. Would you tell anyone if your blank notepad was filled out in your own handwriting while you slept?
What I liked: Solid relatable main characters. I felt driven to keep reading to know what else would appear on Natalie's pages. I love the concept, being taken over by a muse instead of simply inspired. The writing is smooth and clear, pulling me into the pages. I had an inkling toward the twist at the end and didn't feel let down when it came to fruition.
What I Didn't Like: The secondary characters were more or less cliche, but they didn't need to be more developed to allow the plot to move along. So it's a minor dislike in the greater scheme.
I gave Ghost Writer a solid five stars for a thrilling, albeit short-ish, story and wish her all the best in her continuing writing career. I look forward to reading more of her works.
A brand new novella from the pen of Ms. Newbound and what an absolute treat is was. Seeing the cover, I wondered if she had ventured from her usual genre, and in a way, she has by combining crime fiction with the supernatural, but it is a refreshing change from a genre too often packed with similar characters and storylines. The plotline shows best-selling crime writer Natalie, struggling to write her latest blockbuster. Suffering from writer's block, she has to resort to writing the old fashioned way -- with a pen and paper, but is somebody else guiding the pen? This was a great read and I feel the lead character has much more mileage left in her... I hope Netta considers extending this novella series. After all, how many ghosts are hovering around, waiting to tell their story? Well done! 5* well deserved.
Author Natalie suddenly gets writers block and no matter what she tries, the words to her new book are not forthcoming. Then she hits on the idea to go back to the old fashioned way of pen and paper. Tiredness overtakes her and on waking she finds the first chapter written down, although she doesn't recall writing anything at all. Her husband, Steve, persuades her to appear in a television interview talking about the new book - and that's when the trouble start. What she hasn't realised is the story is true and the person she's writing about is very real. They find themselves running for their lives as criminals in high places try to stop the book being completed. Who can they trust? Is there anyone who can help them? Even though this is a novella, it's stuffed to the rafters with action and definitely a read I fully recommend.
I needed a short break from dense nonfiction, and I’m glad I chose the “Ghost Writer” instead of my usual cozy. This carefully plotted novella has two likable protagonists—a best-selling author and her loving, supportive house-husband. After Natalie appears on a TV talk show and mentions her current book, powerful men resort to kidnap, arson and murder to prevent publication. This book chronicles their harrowing journeys to save their lives, whilst Natalie tries to finish her book—which she’s actually writing for a dead reporter, murdered whilst investigating child sexual abuse. I guessed one of the culprits early on, but I was engrossed in reading about how this mystery was resolved. Happily all plot threads were tied off. Brava, Netta Newbound! Brava!
I actually received an ARC of this for an honest review, but purchased my own copy because I loved it so much. Although I love novels, there are times when a short story or novella is the perfect time read for me. I started this and simply couldn't quit reading until I finished it. It's always hard to review a truly good plot without giving away spoilers that you want the next reader to find for themselves.
Suspenseful with a brilliant plot and great characters. As an author myself I felt Natalie's pain on writer's block and I've often wished someone would simply take over my fingers on the keyboard and do the next chapter for me. This novella was so much fun to read.
What a wonderful story! This a story about an author named Natalie who struggles to write a story due to writer's block. In order to overcome her problem, she picks up her notepad and pen. The words start to flow and the story that comes on the paper is the one which is Natalie not aware of herself as she has no memory of writing it. Later, she realizes that the story she is writing is one which is true and she has to finish it. Many people tries to stop her in completing the story and she is in danger now. The story is full of thrill that kept me reading till the end. It was a very well written story and I would recommend to everyone.
Natalie Cooper has a crippling case of writer's block with her deadline looming. she finds the only way she can write is by ditching her laptop and reverting back to pen and paper. But will Natalie manage to finish the book?
Ghost Writer was a brilliant from page one and I loved it. This book has a phenomenal story line and this was in a genre I don't usually read but when i read the blurb and it peeked my interest and when I started reading it I was sucked in. This was the first book I've read by Netta Newbound and if you like short horror stories i would highly recommend this book as you won't be disappointed.
This was a wonderful novella. It takes a great writer to cram all the good stuff into a short book and this one had it all, including great writing. And such a wonderful plot! It's always a breath of fresh air when I read a completely original plot. This truly was a book that I needed to read in one sitting, the words and scenes flowed so quickly and easily. If you're a fan of thrillers (and don't mind a little supernatural thrown in the mix), then you absolutely NEED to read this little book. You will be happy you did.
Read this novella in two sittings and short as it is it was quite a bumpy journey for the protagonist Natalie Cooper. She is a best-selling author with writer's block, who through automatic writing or psychography connecting with a departed investigative journalist unfurls a story of abuse and murder that places her and her family in immediate danger. Perfect read for a long train journey or flight. I have enjoyed reading Netta Newbound's full length novels, but this short story certainly packs a mighty punch. A worthy five stars.
I am a fan of this author and couldn’t wait to read this novella. This is about an author called Natalie who gets writers block and goes back to the old fashioned way of trying pen and paper. She suddenly finds that she is writing a story without being aware of doing it. This leads quickly to the realisation that what she is writing is fact and some nasty things start happening to her and her husband. This story was fast paced and a lot of tense moments! I would highly recommend this book.
