Most people believe that Ember is the wizard daughter of Lord Arundel, a half-mad man who is infamous for his slaughter of shapeshifters.
Only Ember’s former lover and her mother know what she really is—the same kind of shapeshifter that Lord Arundel likes to hunt. She’s been keeping her secret all her life, but somehow Lord Arundel’s assistant, Fletch, suspects what she really is. Ember may be the last of her kind, and Fletch will stop at nothing to capture her—even if she is the daughter of a lord of the Council.
Running is her only option, and it seems she has a turn of luck when she discovers others like herself. But she soon realizes that wherever she goes and whoever she meets, danger will follow, and at too high of a price. It is up to her to save the few remaining shapeshifters—but she refuses to use her powers to hurt others. How can she defeat Fletch and Lord Arundel without becoming the same monsters that they are?
Silverglen is E. A. Burnett’s debut novel. It's a teen epic fantasy about a young woman who must leave home when her shapeshifting abilities are discovered.
Her father - Lord Arundel is known for his hate for shape-shifters. As a powerful wizard able to devise intricate spells, he's not the one to play with. Especially that torture is one of his preferred pastimes. Lord Arundel's minion - Fletch is even worse, a cunning, gross man driven by low instincts and petty wickedness.
Ember flees her home and discovers other shapeshifters. She'll have to gain their trust and overcome many obstacles before she's fully accepted. Lord Arundel doesn't putter, though, Danger is close and it's up to Ember to save those close to her heart.
Fortunately, She's a skilled heroine - a shapeshifter able to perform magic and read spells of other wizards has a pretty unique set of preternatural skills. They come in handy in many situations.
Ember is easy to like. She's brave, fierce and caring. She's not willing to use her powers to hurt others (although at times it would be reasonable). It's nice to see her learn new things and discover herself. While she's probably not the most complex heroine ever, I was pleased to explore the world through her perspective.
Secondary characters were fun and well defined. Shape-shifters are such a colourful band with all exotic and shocking behaviours (like mating in the middle of the camp). One of them, Kitt, gets much more attention than the rest. In the beginning, Kitt doesn't trust Ember. It changes, obviously, but their growing bond didn't feel forced or rushed.
The author’s prose is, for the most part, excellent. There’s very little awkward sentences or ill-constructed descriptions in the book. Actually, I would go as far as to say Burnett's prose has a great flow to it. It never stumbles around. It's pleasant to read and follow.
The characters and the events are well-described, and the pacing of the novel is, mostly, brisk. Shortly after starting in, you get to the meat of the story. There are parts were pacing becomes slower, and I'm not sure if some parts of the book weren't too long.
My main issues concern villains who feel somewhat two-dimensional. Additionally, as it's teen fantasy, some of the personal dramas of characters weren't convincing to me. I appreciate the resolutions, but I can't say I was thrilled and immersed all the time.
In the end, it's good standalone YA book with fitting bitter-sweet ending. I appreciate E.A. Burnett's rich imagination and nicely developed world. I would recommend the book for younger readers looking for an original* epic fantasy book.
* As I don't read that much YA / teen fantasy I may be wrong here. On the other hand, I read a lot (100-150 books per year), and I think Burnett's take on shapeshifters is exciting and definitely not recycled.
Silverglen is E. A. Burnett’s debut novel. It is a fantasy story that involves shapeshifters, magic (good and evil), witchcraft, mystery and adventure. It tells the story of Ember and her quest to find the truth of many things pertaining to her life. As she follows her quest she discovers more and more about whom she is and what she is. Ember has lived her life having to keep a dangerous secret hidden from her father – Lord Arundel. If he discovers her secret she is not convinced that his love for her will be enough to save her from his cruelty. Ember is not only in possession of the ability to perform magic and ‘see’ or read the spells / magic of other wizards she is also a shapeshifter. Lord Arundel (her father) is well known for the murderous slant he takes on shapeshifters. He is a powerful wizard who devises intricate spells to enhance weapons designed to prevent shapeshifters using their powers. Once trapped he tortures and slaughters them most cruelly. She and her mother have been hiding her secret for years but it seems that her father’s assistant Fletch has begun to suspect what she really is and he is out to uncover her deception no matter what happens or who she is. In turn Ember has begun to suspect that neither she or her mother are who she thinks they are and it is more than likely Arundel is not her true biological father. Before Ember can discover the truth she is forced to shapeshift and flees to save her own life. She has heard rumours that that there are more beings like her and she makes it her quest to find them hoping that she’ll find answers to what or who she is. Her guilt about her father’s actions make her want to take the responsibility to save them all, but because of who she is she knows danger will follow her and the price of her own and their freedom may be too high for her or them to pay. Can she find the answers she desires? Will she be able to defeat her father without it costing her or others their lives? This is a well written and believable fantasy tale with skilfully developed multi-dimensional characters. As Ember follows her quest she is on a journey of self-discovery: much like any other normal teenage girl she discovers what her strengths and weaknesses are. Along the way she also acknowledges her anxieties and struggles to overcome them to be true to her-self. Silverglen pulled me in right from the very start as I realised Ember was in great danger. As the story develops (sometimes at a steady pace and sometimes at a fast pace) you discover more and more about Ember and her life. E A Burnett has created an amazing fantasy world and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
Silverglen by EA Burnett takes you to a magic world where wizards and shifters will hold you captivated. EA has written a story that is full of wonder, suspense, sorrow and fear. Her writing and your imagination lend for a powerful fantasy world of characters that you feel all the emotions and turmoil they go through. You find yourself wanting to join the fight and see justice for those who are different to what the perceived normal should be.
Ember was born into a world where wizards live and shifters only exist. Being who she is, is not an option. Keeping her secret is the only option if she wants to live. No one knows her secret except for her mother. She is after all the daughter of a powerful man, a wizard Lord Arundel, head of the council, man who has a hatred of shifters that goes beyond normal. His equally mad assistant, Fletch is a man driven to such horrors that you can only imagine. But does this man know Ember’s secret? Does he know just what she is? Does he know just what her mother has done? When Ember’s secret is discovered she is forced to flee the only home she has ever know. She has always held out hope, that one day she could meet more of her kind. When Ember discovers that Fletch is on her trail she must decide which is the lesser of the two evils, Fletch or her father. Ember decides she must save those like herself and refuses to let the threat harm everyone she has come to love but in doing so she risks her identity, her life and her family. Will the lies soon be discovered? Will Ember finally have the freedom she desires? Will Ember risk all and everything she has learned for the sake of others? Will Ember be brought down by the evil that follows her?
If you like fantasy, wizards and shifters then this is a book for you.
Silverglen by E.A. Burnett a silver-lining four-star read. This is my first read by this author and I usually really enjoy the genre as its young adult/fantasy story that takes you in a different world and takes you on a journey that you don’t ever want to get off. I got that from this story so far, but it did miss a little something, but for the life of me I couldn’t put my finger on it. I enjoyed the story as a whole and thought the writing was great, the characters development was supreme, but I had to put it down and pick it up twice, and I didn’t know why. Maybe it’s just me and the mood I was in while reading it, I don’t know if I was because I read an amazing review from someone I usually have all the same thoughts on books about she raved about this book so I had such high expectations I expected to love it, and in some ways I did the characters were so well done Ember was someone who had a real story to tell and I wanted to hear her story, but I drifted with the other things going on. I would have loved to give this five-stars as the writing almost demands it, I may have to do a re-read soon and then maybe come back and update. Please don’t let the four stars put you off, If you like the genre give the book a go. I am going to keep an eye on the author as I will read more from her.
Silverglen by A.E. Burnett is a paranormal, fantasy story that will engage your senses. This is my first story by this author and I enjoyed her creative details of the animals and environment. I also enjoyed her writing style that kept me engaged until the end. Her story will pull you in from the first word and keep the story flowing until the last word. These characters just pop off the page and the detail of their strengths is remarkable. Find out what happens when this shapeshifter is the only one of her kind, but could it be she really isn't alone?
Lord Arundel is a half crazed man who is famous for his slaughter of shapeshifters. Unfortunately for Ember, it is thought that she is his daughter. She is special, only her ex and her mother know what she truly is. She has been able to keep her secret all these years until now. Has Lord Arudel's assistant found her out? She is one of her kind and the assistant will stop at nothing to capture her and it doesn't matter who her father is. So she does the one thing she feels is her only option, she runs. The flip side of running is that she runs into others that are just like her. Danger seems to follow her where she goes or whoever she meets. She is the only hope these shapeshifters have. But does it come a what price, danger that is beyond anything. She refuses to use her powers to hurt others. Will she defeat Lord Arundel and his assistant without becoming a monster just like them?
These characters are, hmmm, I am not sure how to describe them. They are great and they are so creative. Talking animals, shifting into different things are fascinating. Ember is a determined girl and I really enjoyed her character. She is just so determined to not use her powers for bad that I give her credit for this. Are they safe or will Lord Arudel get to them first? I enjoy shapeshifters stories as they are so fascinating and this one is no difference. I enjoyed how the heroine is a female shapeshifter and not the normal alpha male shapeshifter I am use to seeing. She knows what she wants and how to get it. She is smart and doesn't seem to be afraid of much. After first, you would think that running was just an easy way out but it turns out good. When she finds others just like her, is a great support to her. This story has a few twists and turns that will leave you sitting on the edge of your seat but it will keep you reading, you will need to find out what happens next. Read this story and find out what happens with Ember, will she survive or is she in danger.
This is my first story by E.A. Burnett and I know that I will be reading more of her books as they come out. E.A lives in Ohio with her husband and their black Labrador. When she isn't writing she likes to garden, sing and enjoy her husband's cooking. This is a fast paced page turner that you will not want to miss. This story will take you on a fantasy journey of shapeshifters and talking animals. You never know what you might find in this book. I highly recommend this story as I know you will want to see what happens to Ember like I did.
Silverglen by E.A. Burnett was a thrilling ride full of mystery, lush detail and heart pounding action. From the first chapter until the last I could not put this 5 star book down. You are not eased into this story, from the first words you are tossed into an adventure already in progress. This’s hard method to pull off, and if not done right, will confuse the readers. This was not the case for Silverglen. It’s opening will hook you, it will spark your curiosity, and it will make you turn the pages to find out more. There have been few openings that has captured me so, or that have had so many hidden meanings. For Silverglan the opening wasn’t just the start, it was the first and final threads that built this story, and forged its plot. It also for me, set the stage for our heroine Ember.
Normally It takes me a good bit into a story before I finally warm up to the MC, but not with Ember. She burrowed her way into my heart from the first moments my eyes read about her. She is strong, brave and she grew throughout the story. Her overall growth was exponential. There was a fire in her, a drive to understand what she was and willingness to learn. In order for her to survive, she had to change her point of view on beliefs that she healed so dear, that it almost shattered her. She started out a girl, but by the end of this book was a strong, beautiful, empowering woman.
Quote - “Ember raised her chin. "Do to me what you will. I was protecting myself and my friend.””
Ember wasn’t the only character that showed growth. Kitt was probably the one I wasn’t too sure about. He was a hot mess. Quick tempered and blinded by rage. He distrusted Ember from the first moment of their unconventional meeting until, well, that I will not say because it will surly spoil the fun. What I will say is that, through meeting her, teaching her, it felt to me like he let go. I slowly started to feel connected to him, and as the story move forward, and the two started to bond, I could see how much Ember needed him, just as much as Kitt needed her.
Silverglen is a must read, it’s an addicting, beautiful ride. I highly recommend this stand-alone. The plot was perfectly covered and all answers were given. The ending is a tad bitter sweet, but it fit. It reflected the real-world reality of actions and consequences. They still have a long way to go, they will still have to fight, but, they have a life line. It’s a light to their darkness, and a hope that one day, it will be as they have always dreamed.
The story of Silverglen by E.A. Burnett is a young adult/fantasy book. This is the story of Ember. She is believed to be the wizard daughter of Lord Arundel who is a man that takes pleasure in the slaughter of shapeshifters. What Lord Arundel doesn’t know is that Ember is herself a shape-shifter. She can’t let anyone find out her secret. For now, only her former lover and mother know the truth. However, it seems that Lord Arundel’s assistant Fletch has his suspicions on what Ember really is. Forced to flee she soon finds herself in the company of other shapeshifters and in constant danger. Ember soon realizes that the danger surrounding her will not stop and that she must find a way to defeat Fletch and Lord Arundel. Read this book to find out if Ember defeats Fletch and Lord Arundel and is also able to keep the remaining shapeshifters safe.
This is an amazing story about Ember’s journey of self-discovery and also how she finds the strength to stand up to those who would kill both her and those like her. This is the first book I have read by the author and found that I love the way that she weaves her story and also the characters she has created. Fantasy books are wonderful because they introduce you to new places and the inhabitants of these places as well. The author used a lot of detail when telling her story and I got lost in a different world for a time. Ember has to deal with some very tough situations. I found myself wondering about her relationship with her mother and that it seemed so strained. Her mother has expectations of Ember and there was no discussion as to her requests being obeyed. When Ember is forced to flee and then finds other shape-shifters it is hard on her to adapt. Ember has the fear that in working to defeat those who will do her and the others harm that she will become the same monster that they are. It is a conflict that she fights with daily. Ember has forged new friendships with some of the shapeshifters and they, in turn, have taught her new skills. However, Ember has not told them everything about herself. How would the others react if the secret she has been hiding is revealed? This story had me quickly turning pages to find out what happens next. I didn’t want to put it down until I had read the final page. I was rooting for Ember to succeed.
Harry Potter meets Throne of Glass! E. A. Burnett weaves a magical and forbidden tale in Silverglen with elements from some of the most beloved YA series! Ember is a shifter -- she can shift into any animal she chooses at will. However, in a time and place where shifters are forbidden, she must keep her gift a secret as her father seeks to distinguish shifters all together. Only two people know of her secret, her mother -- who uses Ember's gift to her own advantage -- and Gregory, her best friend since childhood. As Ember gets older, she becomes more determined to find out her own history as well as a way to save other shifters behind her father's back. As Ember's desire to save the shifters grows, the desire also shows. Perhaps someone else knows her secret, one who is very loyal to her father and will not hesitate to turn her in. Ember must find a way to save her kind as well as deal with what every teenager must deal with -- parents, school, a secret crush, sibling rivalry, etc.
E.A. Burnett uses beautiful imagery which, perhaps, foreshadows the rest of her novel if not sets the tone for every scene. Burnett uses "cold iron" in the Silverglen castle showcasing the cage Ember finds herself in as she must hide who she really is. This imagery also showcases her father's personality to her kind. Burnett's language flows into her character's names as well. Upon initial introduction, the names of these characters seem so casual and normal. However, upon further reading, these names fully describe the characters personalities: "It had taken Ember some effort not to laugh aloud when she saw Devondra, perched like an angry green cat next to the hunched, saggy-faced Lord Wincel." Can't you just imagine these characters based on this descirption alone?
E.A. Burnett should join the ranks of the many high-ranked YA authors of today! Sarah J. Maas, Cassandra Clare, Suzanne Collins, and others seem to be inspiration for Burnett's debut novel and she does NOT disappoint!
Ember is the headstrong daughter of Lord Arundel whose goal it is to rid the world of shifters. But after finding a book about the shifters that should have been destroyed years ago, Ember begins to believe that he is not her real father. Her mother is not a shifter and the ability is passed down genetically. Only two people in the world know Ember is a shifter and each of them could turn on her if presented with the right circumstances. When I started reading this book the fear/anticipation of someone finding out Ember’s secret and using her in worse ways than her mother already did had me metaphorically ripping through each page. I needed to know what happened next and if my suspicions were correct. I always feel some satisfaction for figuring out a bit of plot ahead of time but the twists in this book were even more satisfying. One of the characters I particularly enjoyed was Davondra. There wasn’t as much as I would have liked about her character made me think of the women in Greek and Roman times who were shrewd and cunning both at home and politically. I get the feeling that her mother, Salena, was meant to be like that as well but if Davondra can talk her way out of pretty much anything even with her mother then she is far more calculating than I think anyone really cares to realize. She reminds me a bit of Lysandra from the Throne of Glass series. The mix of spells and shifter types of magic was extremely intriguing and I would love to see a prequel about all of the time Ember has spent at the Academy. This universe has so much potential and I hope to see more books. Even a story from Arundel or Salena’s perspective during the war to end shifters would be fascinating.
“Sometimes-pain and cruelty teach us the hardest lessons.”
I passed this book over about 10 times since it released a few months ago. I saw that it was a young adult/teen story about shapeshifters and bad parents and thought – eh, I’m good. Wow, am I so glad that I ended up downloading this marvelous story. The blurb really doesn’t do it justice, but I’m not sure that there would be another way to explain the story.
This is the type of story that I started and just KNEW I would be putting it down to do the adult like things I needed to do on a busy Saturday. When my son came home 5 hours later and saw me sitting in the same position – well I knew the day had just been devoured by this fantastic read.
Shapeshifters and perceptions and politics and family and fear and following others blindly is really what this story is about. At the heart of it is that one person who is willing to make a change, to take a stand to make sure everyone is treated equal. It’s about following your heart and instinct and knowing that you are exactly where you are supposed to be at exactly this moment. I know these statements sound so far off from what the blurb says about the book, these are just my feelings about the heart of the story.
I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who likes to read epic tales. There is no foul language, no graphic sex or violence. I think it would be appropriate for middle schoolers all the way up to the retirement home. I absolutely recommend this book.
Silverglen is the debut novel by E.A Burnett. It is a fantasy that’s full of magic, mystery, action, adventure, wizards, and shapeshifters. Ms. Burnett has created a beautiful and believable world in which she set her captivating tale, and it’s here we meet her skilfully constructed characters, and set off on an enthralling journey of discovery. Ember has lived a bit of a lonely and somewhat sheltered existence, having to keep a huge secret from the world can be quite draining at time, but very necessary. If her secret were to be discover, her life would be in great peril. You see, Ember is a shapeshifter and in her world shapeshifters have been hunted out of existence by Lord Arundel, her father (or is he?). His disdain of shifters is well known and is matched by his sly and devious assistant, Fletch, who has come to suspect what Ember really is. Ember is left with no choice but to flee, with danger hot on her heels. Is Amber really the last of her kind? Will she discover new friends along the way? What discoveries does she make? This isn’t just a journey about Ember finding herself, it’s also about friendship and love. It’s also about her embracing a new confidence and growing as this journey unfolds. What does the future hold for this beautiful, brave young lady? Will she ever be free to be her true self? This is such a vibrant and richly detailed and fascinating story… It’s so well done, I can hardly believe this is a debut novel! I am intrigued by what Ms. Burnett produces next.
So, do you fancy going for a journey into a world of magic, where you will encounter horrible wizards and endangered shape shifters? Silverglen is a well written book by EA Burnett which all fantasy lovers will like.
This book centres around Ember and the secret she is trying to keep from her father, Ember is a shift shifter, a child can only be a shifter if both parents are. Embers parents are not. Not only is Ember in danger if and when he finds out but her mother will be to for having a child with another being. Ember’s father is a horrible wizard and has a deep hatred for shift shapers. Her mother worries that she is not being careful enough and may get caught by her father. If and when her father finds out her secret he probably wouldn’t think twice about killing her as he has done other shifters. When her father does find out her secret she has no choice but to leave her home and find safety away from all she knows. Ember not only has to worry about her father, but also his assistant Fleck who can be just as horrible as her father is and she really doesn’t know who would be worse if caught. When Ember finds out that flick is looking for her she knows she must get as far away as possible and find and help other shifters like her find safety. The questions are now, how close is Flick to finding her? Will Ember can save herself and others like her? And where would they be safe anyway?
This is a fantastical, magical tale about a girl named Ember. She is a shifter growing up in a world that fears and hates them. She has hidden who she really is her entire life. To the world she is known as Ember Thatchery, daughter of Lord Arundel. He is a wizard and head of the council. He also has been hunting and slaughtering shifters for the past twenty years. Only her mother knows what she is and has used her to spy on council meetings.
When Ember realizes her father’s right hand man has figured out what she is, she runs. She would rather flee and face the unknown than get caught in the hands of a sadistic madman. Running was the best decision she could have made. Not only did she meet new friends but she found herself and grew as a person. It became an adventure of not only danger and intrigue but self discovery as well.
The author did an excellent job of describing characters. I could picture them in my mind. The shifters were probably my favourite. They were complex yet so simple, all wanting the same thing; freedom. The freedom to live a normal life like everyone else. I loved the fact that they could shift I to whatever they desired. They weren’t restricted to just one animal. They were blessed with the ability to change into all of them. I really enjoyed the story.
There have been many fantasy stories about shifters, werewolves, and vampires BUT E.A. Burnett has written an awesome story in the fantasy genre for young adults. I had reservations but I was hooked with in the first paragraph. E. A. Burnett has described different characters in the story so vividly that I thought that the action was happening right in front of me on Netflix. E. A. Burnett has done what a lot of authors have tried but have not fully succeeded in the “Millennial Generation”. I challenge every parent to read this story with their child and see who enjoyed the story more.
Ember is a strong character who is keeping an important secret from her father. She is a shifter and her mother and her boyfriend. She is a daughter of a wizard who has condemned all shifters to death. Ember is worried about someone finding out about who she is and how is possible that not both parents are shifters. Ember grows up in front of our eyes as she survives all obstacles thrown in her direction. What will she do to survive the threat? I do not want to give too much information but I will tell you that it is worth the read.
I cannot wait for other stories from E. A. Burnett. Her story is an attention getter and grabber for young adults and adults alike. She is an author to follow.
Silverglen by E A Burnett is a fantastical imaginative fantasy tale that follows the main character, Ember. In a world of spectacularly special beings and creatures, Ember is a different kind of special that she does not want the wrong kind of people to find out about especially the insane Lord Arundell. She has no choice but to run to save herself and stay away from him as she seems to have been discovered. Her journey is full of discovery, bravery and danger.
Ember is a brave and determined heroine and Is very likeable as she has a great desire to do the right thing no matter how much pressure she is put under. She is smart and seemingly fearless which I love to see in female lead character especially in this sort of story. The world building in this book is wonderful and magical and completely draws you in.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I am sure it won't be the last. Silverglen definitely made an impression as one of those books that is like a massive budget film playing in my head. The descriptive elements to this book is brilliant and, on occasion, breathtaking.
I highly recommend this book to any fan of fantasy novels and loves being introduced to new worlds and the creatures within. This was a fabulous book.
Silverglen by E.A. Burnett is this author’s debut novel and it does not disappoint. Written in the young adult fantasy genre Burnett’s story is set in a time of wizards and shapeshifters. In a land full of castles, Lords and Ladies. Silverglen guides us through the journey of a lord’s daughter born to two worlds. In a family where what she is, is the very thing her father hates and hunts. For her safety, she must never tell anyone who or what she is. Isolated and alone she strikes out to find her kind before her lord father or his pets discover who and what she is and take her life. Of course once she finds her people what will she tell them? Just having the name she does is reason enough for the very people she seeks to know to want her dead. Yet what other choice does she have? Burnett writes wonderful characters with splendid detail and development. I enjoyed her shift in this tale from what we have come to believe as the norm for shapeshifters. The feeling in this story is well conveyed and leaves you caring even for the father that seems evil at times. This a great debut novel for Burnett. I look forward to more works from her.
This was a wonderful fantasy story! I thought Ember was such a superb main character. You really see her grow throughout the book. And that she is more than willing to put herself above others. She starts out as basically a sheltered girl with a crush on a boy she grew up with. But as the story goes on, she is forced to grow up and see that not everything is as wonderful as she thought. There is so much more to the world. Ember comes to learn that not all is black or white; and you will too.
The descriptions of the people and places put me right in the book. You will quickly be submerged into the story, being right alongside Ember as she battle evil forces, and learns to trust and love others. And the way the evil characters are described – you can’t help but dislike them. Then you will feel pity for some who really had no choice. To me, the heart of this book are the characters. Yes, there is action and the story is very good, but if it wasn’t for the people in the book, it wouldn’t be half as good.
Silverglen By E.A.Burnett is a paranormal fantasy book. From the first chapter on I was hooked.Ive only read a handful of stories with shapeshifters, but the more I read the more I really enjoy them. The fantasy of it all is outstanding. Although this is my first book I've read by this author I can definitely seeing my self reading more. This story is about Ember.Shes believed to be a wizard, the daughter of Arundel who is a man whom takes pleasure in the slaughtering of ahapeshifters.Arundel doesn’t know that Ember is in fact a shapeshifters, there's only few who know her secret.,that's her ex lover and her mother, she doesn't want others to find out. .It may seem that Arundel assistant has his suspicions though.Ember is forced to flee she finds herself in the company of other shapeshifters, and she's in constant fear. What happens to Ember?Does Arundel figure it out?
I enjoyed this story of the Journey Ember embarks on and reading how the story played out.I could go on and on but I don't want to accidentally spoil the story others.I do however highly recommend this book. I look forward to reading more from E.A.Burnett.
In the oft times oversaturated genre of YA fiction, E.A. Burnett has created a world that stands out from the crowd - in her debut novel no less. Not only is the fantasy world of Silverglen so richly detailed that the reader feels completely immersed within its borders, the main character Ember serves as a strong and relatable female protagonist. In short, the story finds Ember, a shapeshifter and wizard, at odds with her vicious father; a man intent on brutalizing “shifters” such as herself. On her journey, Ember faces situations that are both unique (the difficulty of shape shifting quickly for example), and also innately familiar (the uneasy feeling of being the newcomer to a group). The underlying themes throughout this fast paced novel are vitally important, particularly to YA readers. Who among us hasn’t felt uncomfortable in our own skin or felt the sting of unrequited love? E.A. Burnett skillfully manages to navigate these difficult topics by subtly weaving humor, compassion, and genuineness throughout - a truly commendable act. I can’t wait to spend more time in this world she has masterfully created!
Silverglen by E. A. Burnett is a fantasy novel in all its glory. Focusing on a lead female hero on a journey to discover more about herself and help to undo the atrocities caused by her father this book has everything you could need.
Ember has hidden a secret her whole life. It is one that, if discovered, could endanger her life. With only two people who know what she is hiding it seems she has done all she can to hide that which she does not want to be found. When it looks like her secret is out the only thing Ember can do is go on the run to save her life. By doing so she is opened up to a whole world that she was previously sheltered from, one in which she feels partially responsible for the actions of her father. One in which she wants to do something that will try and overcome all he has done.
This author clearly knows how to write a great fantasy novel, one that keeps the reader engaged and on the edge of your seat right until the end. Brilliant in all ways I will definitely be delving immediately in to more this author has to offer.
“Silverglen” by EA Burnett is a paranormal story that uses shapeshifters as the main focus. I am not sure what I was expecting when I started reading this story, but I am pleased to say that it kept my interest and kept me turning the pages. I feel like the characters really had great details, especially when they shift into their other form. I was not a big paranormal reader until these last few months and as this story is probably not one I would have normally picked, I am glad that I did. It opens your mind to that fantasy world where things happen and your imagination can run wild. The action and mystery in the story was great and kept you on edge wondering what was next. Another thing I really liked about the book is the fact that it does not take several chapters to get started in the real excitement. It is a quick start as the author throws you immediately into the action. If you are wanting to escape into a new world for a little while, I highly recommend this book.
Ember is believed to be the young wizard daughter of Lord Arundel who likes to kill shapeshifters. She spies on meetings of the Council to learn anything she can especially when it comes to shapeshifters because she is one. Only a few people know her secret but when Lord Arundel assistant Fletch, suspects what she is she knows her only option is to run.
Where she thought was safe with other of her kind, isn't safe at all.
I am not one for fantasy but this one drew me in. Ember was such a strong female character which isn't shown much in the YA genre. She was brave and grew throughout the story.
The writing is so well done, it pulls you into the world and doesn’t let go til the last page. It's a story filled with mystery, wizards and intriguing characters.
I highly recommend to anyone especially people who love fantasy or aren't sure what fantasy book to help them into the genre.
Silverglen by E. A. Burnett is a wonderful fantasy novel with a host of interesting characters. It follows the story of Ember, a shapeshifter in hiding from her own father. Eventually she is forced to run for her life from her father’s assistant who suspects what she is and is determined to capture her. While on the run she meets other shapeshifters that teach her more about her abilities. I absolutely loved this book. The way it was written simply pulled me in from the first page and wouldn’t let me go, which is surprising because I don’t normally read fantasy novels. The characters in this book seemed to jump off the page. I found myself relating to deal Ember’s struggle with how to deal with the people hunting her kind, without losing herself in the process. All in all I have to give this book a 5 star rating.
Silverglen by E.A Burnett I don't even know where to start with how amazing this book actually is. Right from the beginning you find yourself cheering for Ember who is believed to be a shape shifter in a world where shape shifters are hated and holding your breath with every struggle that she comes across. The character of Ember is developed so flawlessly and you really watch her grow as a character, then as you are introduced to all the shape shifters you fall In love. This book gives you war, struggle, love and peace. I don't read many books that have shape shifters and other aspects of a magical world but I found myself unable to put this book down because I couldn't wait to find out the ending. A quick paced book very well written and one you will surely not regret reading and will soon be recommending to all your friends!
E.A. Burnett's recent novel captivates the imagination, making it difficult to put down. Her writing engages all of the senses: sight, touch, smell, etc...extending to even those we humans do not possess. I especially appreciated her ability to highlight strengths possessed by each animal taxon and release the character's perspective from the traditional human-centric universe. She exhibits a remarkable ability to capture sensations that are impossible for humans to experience. For me, this opened a wider realm of perspectives to not only explore and appreciate, but also relate to the natural world around me in a new way. I am excited to read E.A. Burnett's future writings and hope to explore more of the Silverglen universe.
Silverglen by E.A. Burnett was a suspenseful fantasy read. The writing was very smooth and transitioned very well. I literally couldn't put it down from the start, there was no need to warm up or any time to get into the story. It was well written and very descriptive, so easy to get lost in Burnett's fantasy world of wizards, and shapeshifters. The main character Ember was very easy to fall in love with and I loved the character development throughout the storyline. I love reading fantasy books, but I believe this is written in a way that would make it a first time fantasy read for someone who is ready to dip their toes in the fantasy genre.
I give Silverglen by E.A. Burnett a 5 star rating!
The story of Silverglen by E.A. Burnett is a young adult fantasy fiction book appropriate for all ages. The main character is named Ember a wizard who is the daughter of Lord Arundel. Lord Arundel is a half-demented man who is most famous for his slaughtering of shapeshifters. Ember has a secret that must be kept that way, the danger she would be in if anyone found out would be immense. She must hide her secret from everyone including her father and his assistant who will stop at nothing to capture her.
I would rate this book at a 5/5 star and would recommend it to other readers. It is well written, has suspense and you are easily able to fall into the story while reading. The characters are well thought out and the description of them alone engages the reader.
Silverglen written by E.A. Burnett. This was a unique read for me. I Am new to E.A . Burnett so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Silverglen was a pretty addicting a didn’t want to put it down. E.A. Burnett has a unique way of describing the setting so well you have no choice but to imagine it as your reading and creating all these people, places and scenes in your head. Ember was a great lead character she is finding out so much about herself and her strength throughout the entire story. How will she handle the threat of which is her father, hes assistant, and everyone else who wants her and those like her dead? You will have to read to find out.
Silverglen by A.E. Burnett is an amazing fantasy story with shifters and magic! This book is full of twist and turns! Ember’s emotions are so intense that Burnett’s writing abilities make you feel like they are your own emotions! Ember must live her life in fear of her father and his minions as they hunt for her kind. I couldn't imagine how it would be to never be able to be one's true self! Being a shifter and wizard, Ember must use her abilities to do what is right even though it isn't easy! This was a fun and exciting read! I can't wait to see what Burnett has for us next!
E.A. Burnett takes you on a whirlwind adventure to the mystical land of wizards and shifters. Burnett’s powerful writing skills make the fantasy world come to life it truly is magical. I honestly couldn't believe when I turned that last page I wanted more of it. Sorrow, fear, lies and wonder completes this book thoroughly.
Who will discover the truth about the lord's daughter? Will she save the others like her? What will she risk?
