Teacher Hattie Selkirk is happy with her quiet life. But Miss Opal believes Dr. Mack McKinnon is the perfect candidate to marry Hattie–he just doesn’t know it yet. Miss Opal hatches a plan, but soon realizes that it will require more from her than expected. Is Hattie’s and Dr. Mack’s budding relationship worth Opal’s personal sacrifice?
Another fun visit back to Belton, Texas to see what Miss Opal and her sister Armilda are up to now. They believe the local schoolteacher and doctor need help getting together, so between the good Lord and Miss Opal's creative plans, the pair is destined for each other. There are plenty of antics along the way though, involving a play, a pie, a plate of brownies, and plenty of faith.
"Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert."
New beginnings are a theme for both main characters, especially in the romance department, who are stuck in their ways, and work long hours. Loved the use of hymns and mini-discussions of faith, especially about prayer; it flowed well with the storyline. There are some good examples of praying and waiting on the Lord for answers. It was nice to have some of the characters from the first Miss Opal story return too. The author effectively uses real landmarks and history to create an authentic setting. The history of the County Asylum and Poor Farm at the end was interesting. The stigma of mental illness and treatment was sadly true.
Recommend to readers who enjoy Christian historical romances. Hope to see more of this series! 4.5 stars
(An ebook was provided by the author. All opinions are my own.)
I loved Miss Opal Learns a Lesson! Miss Opal has a strong relationship with the Lord and she follows His instructions and it leads to a lot of matchmaking. This time her focus is on school teacher, Hattie Selkirk. Hattie is shy and is running from her past. She has been the school teacher for three years.
Town doctor, Mack McKinnon is the father of one of Hattie's students. Miss Opal decides Mack and Hattie are to be together. Miss Opal and her sister do all kinds of things to cause them to see each other hoping that love will blossom. Hattie already has a great relationship with Mack's daughter and enjoys spending time with her. Mack begins to see Hattie in a way that he had not seen her before. He begins to fall in love with her and desire her to become his wife.
Hattie fears marriage because her brother suffered from an illness that she feels she will pass to her children. She fights her feelings for Mack due to her fear. Once she sees that Mack has changed and has begun to care for the causes that are dear to her, she realizes she loves him too but can she put her fears to rest to finally become happy?
Miss Opal also has the opportunity to realize what is important to her and sees that following God's instructions can bring about unspeakable joy and change one man's life.
Miss Opal Learns a Lesson is well written and flows nicely. The characters are lovable and the story is great. I look forward to reading more of Miss Opal's adventures.
In Miss Opal Learns a Lesson by Amy K. Ronnie, Miss Opal is up to her match making again, with the Good Lord's help, of course. When she decides school teacher Hattie Selkirk and town doctor Mack McKinnon would be perfect for each other, let the shenanigans begin.
I love the relationship between the sisters, Miss Opal and Miss Armilda and how they always have each other's back. What will happen when Miss Opal disagrees with what the Good Lord tells Miss Armilda needs to be done? Will she submit to his instructions or turn her back on them and do as she sees fit?
I really enjoyed Miss Opal Makes a Match and couldn't wait for further adventures with the sisters. Miss Opal Learns a Lesson did not disappoint. I highly recommend both books to everyone. They are such fun, entertaining short reads that just make you feel good! I was given this e-book by the author. These are my own honest thoughts and opinions of this book.
I enjoyed this story about a woman who had all the makings of a real busybody, but she declared she was only doing what the Good Lord told her to do. However, she was far from perfect and had a bit more trouble heeding the promptings from the Lord about her own life than she did when it came to getting involved in the lives of others. She had to learn her own lessons the hard way at times while seeking to intervene in the lives of a certain school teacher and a doctor to help them do what she sensed God telling her that they should do. Of course, the ones she was trying to nudge in the direction she thought God was saying they should go also had some lessons to learn. The story is a quick read that conveys the message that God is interested in our lives and will direct and help us if we allow Him to do so. I received a copy of the book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.
It was so much fun to return to Belton, Texas, and see what in the world Miss Opal has done next. Although this is the second book in Rognlie’s Miss Opal Series, you could read it as a stand-alone. But Miss Opal is so intriguing you’ll want to read Book 1.
This delightful book has great characters, is clean, has a light romance, and even includes history from that era. To see what music can do for those with mental illness was very interesting.
A great story to relax with, I highly recommend you see what Miss Opal is up to!
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
I truly enjoyed this lighthearted book about Miss Opal and her sister involving Miss Opal's matchmaking plans (directed by the Lord, of course!) for a young couple in town. The book had a bit more depth than the first installment with the author tackling the subject of views about mental illness in the early 1900's. We also saw another side of Miss Opal when she struggled to surrender something she loved to God. I enjoyed the historical information about Texas at the end of the book.
This was a delightful story! Set in an actual historical setting, it was a charming read. Sweet, thoughtful, funny, and filled with poignant truths, I truly enjoyed every moment.
