'It will get dark. The crocodiles will come . . . It is for you to decide, Luke. Live or die - it is your choice.' Luke Evans never knew his father - he'd cleared out before he was born. So when his internet skills track down someone living at a luxurious resort in tropical Queensland who could be his dad, Luke's imagination runs wild. What happens when they finally meet is unexpected, and shocks him to the core. Luke has some hard lessons to learn as he realizes that no one is perfect, and that the world can be a tricky place, where people aren't always who they appear to be and nothing can be accepted at face value. How Luke deals with what he finds will change his life . . . if he can survive.
Des Hunt was a science and technology teacher for many years, interspersed with periods of curriculum development both in New Zealand and overseas. During this time he had several textbooks published to support the New Zealand curriculum. In recent years he has looked at other ways of interesting youngsters in science, creating computer games and writing non-fiction and fiction with scientific themes.
After living in Auckland for much of his life he moved with his wife, Lynne, to Matarangi on New Zealand’s Coromandel Peninsula. He retired from the classroom in 2007 to concentrate on writing fiction for children. He continues his aims of fostering young peoples’ natural interest in the science of their surroundings by visiting schools and libraries where he runs workshops and presentations.
Title: The Crocodile Nest Author: Des Hunt Date: 8 September 2014 Text Type: Novel
Q1: Who is my favourite character and why?
My favourite character in this novel is Luke Evans because he is very bright on computers and dealing with electronics, he has a good sense of humour and is strongly attached to his father and pig hunting. Luke is very brave especially when the boar almost got him he was determined to stop the boar. "like a real pig hunter would do" that was a phrase int the move that Luke said showing the reader how brave Luke really is and thats why Luke is my favourite character in this novel.
Q9: What did this text make you think about? Why?
This text made me think about if i go pig hunting that i will be as brave as Luke Evans. Especially when Luke's old friend got hacked and stole her money if that ever could happen to me or a family member. If i never new or seen my father that i would try to at least find him because i would want to know him and hopefully he would want to know me and thats what made me think about.
The Crocodile Nest is in amazing book. It is set in places I've actually been to, so I can connect with the story on another level. The characters were great, there was lots of action, and you were always wondering what would happen next! I would highly recommend it :) The book itself is about a boy called Luke, who has been told his whole life that he has no father. When Luke and his mum move house they have a car crash just before they reach their new home. Luke finds a man, Kev, who helps them, and even offers to take Luke pig hunting. Along the way, Luke meets Beth and her granddaughter Lora. Luke discovers his love for pig hunting, but when Kev admits that Luke is the spitting image of a man that he used to know, before he moved out to Australia. What if this man is Luke's dad? What will happen if they meet? And who is this "Chizza", a man with a short temper and dark secrets? Set both in a small New Zealand town, and in the beautiful Cairns/Cape Tribulation of Australia, this story had me every step of the way.
-I decided to read this book because I have read a book by the same author and I enjoyed it a lot. -The category on the bingo board that this book completes is a book written by a New Zealander. -What I liked about this book was the constant action and excitement. It was a fantastic combination of both mystery and action. I loved the way that the author described the environment that the characters were in and what was going on. I also liked the humour in some parts to the book, it made the book more interesting. -What I didn't like about this book was the gruesome descriptions in very few parts of the book. E.g. A part where it described a man being attacked by a crocodile. -I would recommend this book to anyone over the age of 10 because anyone younger wouldn't understand some of the vocabulary used.
Luke and his mum have recently returned to the Coromandel town of Whitianga. Thru a series of fortuitous events Luke lands a job helping an elder recently widowed Beth learn to use her computer. He also discovers that his absentee father is alive and well in Queensland Australia. Beth and her granddaughter Lora decide to check out the area where Luke's father is living and they take Luke with them. Luke embarks on an adventure that includes computer trickery, crocodiles and the unfortunate realisation that not everybody is what they seem. A fantastic story as always from Des Hunt. There are no dull moments between the fantastic descriptions of the natural world and the action that is never far away.
I am am reading this book because I have read some of des hunts other books like whale pot bay, the phantom of the tanipha and a few others. It's very interesting and it keeps getting better and better!!!
