Having heard Caitlin's story on the NoSleep podcast about a seaside British pub, I decided to buy her book of short stories. I was not at all disappointed, every story is chilling and stands in their own right. Her prose is beautiful, and the artwork in the book is phenomenal.
The dozen or so stories in this collection are fairy tales, but not the sanitised happily-ever-after variety. Despite the urban settings with modern conveniences like cell phones and air travel, these are the kinds of stories adults whispered to each other while huddled around the fire, in the days before there were electric lights to drive away the darkness and nameless things howled outside the triple-bolted door. The fae here are glamorous, cold, cruel, and not to be trifled with. The stories are beautifully written, splendidly illustrated, and full of loss, regret, guilt, obsession, and terror.
I've been a fan of Caitlin Spice (or Cymoril Melnibone, as she's also known) and her stories for ages, and I finally caved and bought this book now that her stories have all been taken down. I hope these are only temporarily lost and not gone and that they might appear in a new book of hers someday.
A collection of short stories that mostly speak to the fantasy of the fae world. Filled with YA stories this book is great fun for both adults and older children, it does have some instances that might require an awkward explaination for younger readers. Otherwise a good bedtime read.
Honestly when I came by this book at the library it was in the 'last chance, will be gone tomorrow' category. It had no summary and just a picture of a vampire lady on the back. And then I found out that it was a collection of r/nosleep stories and I felt like I picked up a cursed tome and I love it lol.
All of the stories in this one were really neat and creepy in their own ways. I liked the fantasy horror that was going on in the book, very underrated genre.
