Compliance 101 is as useless as other Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA) books and products (e.g. Auditing and monitoring Health Care Compliance). Compliance 101 is promoted by this association that sells ethics to make money, which explains the high price.
Compliance 101 is overpriced for what it offers. It is falsely promoted as a book that would help CHC candidates pass their certification exam in health care compliance, which is also offered by HCCA. In reality, the test has nothing to do with this book, and it consists of 120 nebulous questions while only 100 of them count toward the final score. Clearly, the test is deliberately designed to increase non-passing rates in order for the association to make more money. They charge $250.00 dollars to take this test for the HCCA members and $350.00 for the non-members. They promote these expensive and useless books to enrich their board members (like Troklus, Warner, and Schwartz) and executives. They even purposely set the passing scores higher than any other association (72%) to ensure that people will take the test more than once and pay them more money. At the same time, there are no materials whatsoever that would prepare a candidate for their certification test, unless you enroll in one of their $3,000 conferences, which might then increase your chances of getting some assistance to pass their exam. Until recently, their online short quiz was guarded like a top secret where the answers weren't even posted in order to help candidates assess their knowledge. However, they recently modified their quiz and added the answers to probably appease their members' complaints. Basically, the certification exam in health care compliance (CHC) is a shot in the dark, meanwhile, HCCA continue to falsely promote their books like compliance 101 and other products as preparatory for their CHC test. The bottom line, HCCA is about making dollars!

Save your money instead of buying compliance 101, purchasing other HCCA products, or even joining this organization and taking their rigged certification exams.
Selling ethics for money is a great theme that is catching on in many other organizations!
Maybe after you read compliance 101 you can start your own!!

this is a book I frequently pull off my bookshelf at work as I develop my organization's compliance program. It has been very helpful as I get this program off the ground. I think I will be referencing it quite often over the next year.

This book does a really good job of laying down the basics. It's a bit dry and reads like a text book. But it's rather succinct and straight forward as an introduction to compliance.

I know a lot of CHC candidates buy this for exam study prep (as did I). It clearly explains a few subject areas covered at the Academy--gives a great overview of an effective program and delves into HIPAA. I do not think this book is necessary for exam purposes if you attended the Academy, but it is well written and includes several forms. It's pricey...would be a good purchase for a department and board to share. If you are new to compliance or are starting a new program and looking for insight, this would be helpful.
