Pushing papers at a werewolf sanctuary is the last assignment Aviva would have wished for. It’s the bottom rung of the career ladder for a vampire, a job that will leave her isolated from most of her kind as she watches over members of a species whose very existence threatens the secrecy of the supernatural world. Her only consolation is the promise of peace and quiet. After all, the werewolves may be troublesome, but they’ve kept their own secrets for a century.
But the situation at the sanctuary is not all it appeared to be when Aviva received her assignment. Age-old tensions between vampires and werewolves come to a head when a human in a nearby village is found brutally murdered and suspicion lands squarely on the sanctuary’s supernatural inhabitants.
When the pack leaders refuse to turn the killer in to face justice, Aviva knows her elders will do anything to keep their world safe from humans, even if it means wiping out the werewolves for good. With the help of a mistrustful female and a relentlessly tempting alpha male, it will be up to Aviva to overcome the instinctive hatred between their species and catch a murderer before the human world takes notice—and before the sanctuary turns into a battleground.

Sanctuary was a great follow-up to Resurrection!!
We find Aviva heading to the werewolf encampment to serve her time and lay low until she can be trusted once more not to feed on humans. There, she finds a lazy "boss" who hinders her every move, and move she need do because things are not as they seem at the sanctuary. The wolves are forced to stay, sign in, and are treated like children during their wolf transition. The three packs are not on good terms and are fighting for territory. Aviva believes she has lost all empathy, but she must decide if she can truly stand down in the face of slaughter and injustice.
Sanctuary wasn't what I expected, but it is what this series needed in order to continue to build up Aviva's character. Daniel is out of the sanctuary pretty quick after he helps Aviva get settled. It's clear he's still confused on his next steps because he's clearly falling for Aviva and knows it's wrong. We don't see much of him in the second installment, but Tanith kept the action going enough that you don't really have a lot of time to miss him.
Now, of course, you're probably all thinking, who's the werewolf introduced into the love triangle *roll eyes.* Honestly, I thought it was coming too, but it's not as you expect and Tanith Frost pulls off Aviva's sexuality and loneliness quite maturely without any bullshit. Yet, she also sets up the plot and Aviva's character enough that Daniel is going to have some things to say about her time at the sanctuary, or to let sleeping dogs lie, so to speak.
The ending was heartbreaking and I wanted to yell at Tanith quite a bit, but it also answers some questions about what direction the next book is heading. I am so impressed with how much thought was put into book two. Everything happens for a reason and all plot points are clearly thought out. Extremely well done and I cannot wait to get my hands of book 3.
This sequel was EVERYTHING I was hoping for and more! I am completely obsessed with this series which says a lot as I typically don't like vampires or werewolves. Every page of this book kept my interest. What an intense and exciting read. I laughed, my heart pounded, and I cried but most of all I just couldn't quit turning the pages fast enough as I just had to know what would happen next. There is nothing better than picking up a book and just becoming so absorbed in the story that the real world disappears for awhile. Like the vampires of this series it is rare to read a new version of werewolves, and these werewolves are different and fascinating. The addition of these new characters along with their backstory made for a great read. I can't wait for everyone to meet Silas, yum! Aviva is still such a wonderfully strong, layered, and intriguing character. Her inner struggles and growth in this book have only made me love her more. All that we learn about her and other characters as the story progresses just leaves more questions to be answered and interesting secrets to be revealed as the series unfolds. I can't wait for the next one and to see what new supernatural creatures show up next!
*Thank you for the ARC copy provided to me from the author in exchange for an honest review*
In many ways, this is a much stronger book than the series opener, Resurrection. The second installment in an intriguing UF series set in Newfoundland, Canada (my province!), the plot is much more intricate and is full of twists and turns right up until the last page.
I absolutely LOVE the idea of a Werewolf Sanctuary in Gros Morne National Park! Aviva is sent there for her first solo assingment, a huge demotion that is supposed to see her pushing paperwork and keeping her head down in punishment for her actions at the end of the last book. It's a warning from the head of her Clan, Maelstrom, that Aviva had better start toeing the party line - or Else.
But when Daniel takes Aviva to the Park, the beautiful but boring wilderness posting she was promised turns out to be more of a prison than a haven. Werewolves and Vampires have a deep-seated instinctual hatred of each other. The official story is that the Vampires are ensuring the survival of the Werewolves, showing mercy for past transgressions by granting them the Park territory and carefully managing their numbers. They are supposed to live on the Clan's sufferance and obey it's laws to the letter. The reality is very different.
Only two vampires patrol the fortified Park station, and one of them was replaced by Aviva. Her new partner, Paul, is an inept slacker. Once Daniel goes back to St. John's, Aviva is on her own. There was only supposed to be a single Pack, but Aviva finds herself in the midst of an intense power struggle between three factions that consider themselves seperate Packs, roughly split into Older, Younger and Female membership.
Aviva, against her better instincts, becomes involved with Silas, Alpha of the younger male Pack. He is rude and rebellious but Aviva is nevertheless attracted to the strangeness of his Werewolf powers, which repel her in equl measure. Despite Aviva's research and her attempts to talk to all the Packs, the wolves remain aloof and stand-offish - until their very existence is threatened.
There are some elements I didn't quite understand, especially the female Pack, whose very existence and growing numbers is a mystery. I also would have liked to learn more about Aviva's power, which was rather unhelpful and spectacularly vague when she used it here. Perhaps it will sharpen with time and use? The other major issue that bothered me was: The heightening tension between the Packs, and between the Packs and the Vampires, makes for a tense and suspenseful - if sometimes grim - read.
Despite the many mistakes Aviva makes here, she discovers something very important about both species, largely due to her penchant for throwing herself head-first into danger. My kind of girl! The discoveries she makes will have ramifications for both species in the future. I'm looking forward to reading more of Aviva's adventures!
BONUS: I love that the beautiful pendant shown on the cover is the provincial stone, Labradorite (which is spectacularly gorgeous in person, shining with a blue scintillating brilliance as I can attest, owning a far less fancy necklace myself), and that it is actually a part of the story. It's a clever, subtle nod to the regional culture!
As with the first book in this series, the author continues to portray vampires, and now werewolves in an original way.
Aviva knows what's expected of her from her vampire clan, Maelstrom, but still struggles with unacceptable human traits in her new 'life'. The clash between clan expectations and her own values creates ongoing, dangerous conflict and several times I wondered how, or even if she'd find her way out of predicaments she'd gotten into. Daniel again maintains a frustrating distance, and has secrets yet to be revealed. Several new characters are introduced in this book, and one in particular didn't turn out as I'd expected.
The vampire books I've read far outnumber those with werewolves, but I've never come across anything like Frost's interpretation. Female readers in particular will enjoy this version.
Sanctuary kept me riveted, and I finished the book in two days. For vamp/werewolf fans who've grown weary of repetitive storylines, give the Immortal Soulless Series a try - you won't be disappointed.
I received a digital copy of this book from the author.
This series about Vampires is unlike any you have ever read. I won’t go an describe the story because the author does that quite well on the cover and that is why you pick up this book to read. I like how Aviva although reluctant at first, in book 1 to lose herself to what she has become, book 2 has her accepting the “Void” which is all these vampires have in place of a Soul. That Aviva continues to hold on to a shred of her humanity as she accepts the fact she no longer has a soul makes the book a fascinating read. I received a copy of book 1 for an honest review but when ahead a bought a copy of each book.
I am awaiting for book 3 to come out. The author has become a favorite of mine and all her books are outstanding.
Sometimes a book two is a letdown. This book two is Just as good as book one. It’s always cool to find a series so good you hate having to do anything that takes you away from the act of reading. The main character, Aviva, is a recently turned vampire who has something different and more about her. At this point even she doesn’t know exactly what that is. She is a character that you like. You want her to succeed in what she does and what she believes in. Obstacles are set before her and she overpowers them in her own way. Much to the chagrin and or disdain of her Vampire superiors. Tanith Frost is an amazing author and as I move on to book three I am hoping there are many more in this series. Thank you Tanith for all the hours of a truly joyous reading experience.
This book was **A**MAZING! Sanctuary, book 2 of Immortal Soulless, was so *bleeping* hot it should be shelved differently. Again, Tanith blew me away with her rendition of Werewolves and vampires in this book. Her characters are so well written I felt like I was there in the book with them! The werewolves have to be my favorite, I love Aviva and all, but the Were's were intriguing and ... Silas (insert character crush & marriage proposal) ... Silas was ... HOTT ... Aviva is one hell of a vampire! Hands down! 5-Star lady! I absolutely love this series!
This book is AMAZING. I really, really liked the first in this series. But I LOVED this one. It literally made me laugh and cry. It even had fabulous literary reference an old English major thrives on. What a wonderful tale. Ms. Frost has a genuine gift and I have been blessed to be able to be her reader and fan!! Now to get my hands on the third book.....
That was quite a story! A wonderful story. I loved the characters and they kept me on pins and needles wondering what was going to happen next. I think it was very well written, leaving you wondering just where things and characters were going to end up. I highly recommend this series to other readers loving the supernatural.
Omg after the issues with book 1 this is well worth the read. Hot vampires and sexy werewolves. Aviva is quite the hottie it seems, due to undistorted view on the world. She see things differently to her clan and strives to follow her heart (dead and unbeating as it is) to protect those who her clan see as outsiders and trouble makers. Knowing that doing it will put her own undead life at risk.
This was another well written paranormal set in Newfoundland by Tanith Frost . This second one added werewolves to the vampire mix. I am really enjoying this unique world Tanith has developed and I look forward to reading her next instalment in her Immortal Soulless series.
I am really enjoying following Aviva's story. I haven't been big on the vampire vs werewolves genre, but this was a fun read with some great steamy moments ;). The story is wonderfully written and I highly recommend this series!
Couldn't put it down. Continuing Aviva's story this book was a great sequel. Tanith's writing is a refreshing change to the usual vampire tales. Off to read the next one now.
A real page turner - be careful - you might become obsessed with the characters and their plights!
This is the second book in the Immortal Soulless series and it continues Aviva's journey of self-discovery as a vampire. Aviva has been "punished" and sent to the Sanctuary to monitor the werewolves when a series of murders is committed. The murders need to be solved in order to maintain the secrecy of the existence of werewolves and vampires, and it's up to Aviva to help solve them using her unique gifts and her ability to connect with others. There is a hint of romance (well, as much as can be allowed for a vampire, anyway) and much adventure. When Aviva seems to be out of luck and all on her own, she finds a surprising ally in a high-ranking clan member.
Again, Frost has created an amazing world where vampires and werewolves have taken a different turn and are very complex creatures, much like humans are complex. This world set in eastern Canada is so realistic that it makes you want to believe in these mythical creatures. The character development is complex and deep, while leaving enough mystery to keep us coming back to learn more and see how it all plays out.
This was a refreshing take on the vampire and werwolf story. I really enjoyed reading this story and getting lost in a familiar yet very different world! Can’t wait to see what happens next. If you like vampire and werwolf sorties this is decently one you should read.
