Vivian Mercy has been running from the past for so long she doesn’t know any other way of life. When a panicked call comes from one of her only friends she finds herself returning to the city of her nightmares where her dedication as a doctor and resolve to help others is put to the test.
Etain Vi’Aerlin has been watching over Noctem Falls for centuries. Sent by his queen he became a silent sentinel in the shadows helping Magnus whenever he could. While the sickness around him claims more lives he discovers what it feels like to be helpless, as an ancient warrior he doesn’t have the skills to fight this unseen enemy.
At any other time finding a mate would be cause for celebration, but Etain wants Vivian as far from Noctem Falls as possible, unfortunately, as the only doctor with an intimate knowledge of diseases she has to stay in the city, and finds herself working tirelessly to discover a cure in the middle of the deadly chaos sweeping the levels.
As Vivian’s past is revealed she finds herself not only combating the terrible virus but also the rebellious faction of the Founding Families. Etain vows to stand by her, even if it means abandoning the post assigned by his queen.
It’s a race against time to unravel the lethal secrets the virus is hiding before the city itself is lost forever.
I am going to keep this short and to the point. I loved this book. I loved our new couple Vivi and Etain. I loved the on going plot. I loved my time with Meryn and her gang but what really made this book for me was Aiden beating the shit outta men that were treating Meryn badly. I loved that sooo much. I hate the cliffhanger going on with Magnus..... I can't for the next book.
The shifter community at Noctem Falls are falling prey to a virus that is attacking young and old alike without mercy. None so far have been able to isolate the virus's specifics or come up with a treatment plan for those already infected. Worse is that there is now evidence that dark magic may have been used to manipulate the virus complicating the issue. The only positive is that the virus hasn't affected the vampire community as if that were the case an all out paranormal war would ensue at Noctem Falls.
Dr. Vivian Mercy, a paranormal disease specialist, is contacted for her expertise in isolating the virus attacking shifters at Noctem Falls. Though Vivian has sworn never to return for reasons known only to her, hearing that children are involved changes things. Her focus will be to identify and treat the mystery virus and leave as soon as possible.
Etain Vi’Aerlin has been experiencing the dreams signaling his mate will soon be arriving. While this should be a joyous occasion, Etain is fearful as the outcome of his dreams and the reality currently facing everyone at Noctem Falls make it deadly dangerous for whoever his mate will be.
Vivian & Etain recognize their mate connection immediantly but will have to be on guard as the past and present will challenge them in ways they couldn't have foreseen. And for once Meryn isn't behind the shit storm about to hit Noctem Falls but will be in the thick of things regardless.

Can I start this review by saying: Seriously. How long is Meryn going to be preggers? I'm trying to remember which installment it was first found out that she was expecting Meryn 2.0 but this is getting ridiculous. Not only do we NOT KNOW the sex of Meryn 2.0 but there is no due date/delivery in the foreseeable future. I get the build up for this and understand (I actually have a theory on baby Meryn I want to find out if I'm onto something or not. Cue Keelan) but enough already.
OK. Getting that off my chest I continue to be a fan of this author and series. I highly anticipate each installment to get an ongoing fix of Meryn and whichever couple is showcased.
In this story fae Etain & vampire Vivi are brought together though there are still major problems going on around them. Good time to repeat that this series builds off previous installments so I highly discourage anyone from reading it as a stand alone. Nope. Need to read previous installments to fully appreciate the genius of this author and series. It's pretty much a given that the majority of the story revolves around those circumstances as it's a case of insta love for each couple recently.
The world building is has been consistent in recent books of the series as the location hasn't changed. Only the upgrade modernization created by Meryn changes things out are. I sometimes (not often) wonder about the day to day boring world building aspects but after getting a taste of the Public Works & Utilities Department in one scene I don't think I'll have any future concerns regarding this aspect in the foreseeable future.
Secondary characters are basically unchanged from recent series installments. The addition of new character Halbjorn Bergson brings another layer to this series though i had some reservations on who/what/when/where regarding him in general. WHY COULDN'T IT HAVE BEEN DENNIS???????
The storyline itself lends the reader to a complicated journey of twists, turns, and unexpected moments that have different degrees of success (for me). One of the better aspects was that recently I had felt that the existing couples were coming across as more of a sibling type relationship. Happy that this is no longer the case. On the opposite side of things I do feel the plot series direction is becoming muddy and disjointed. Unfortunately, commenting on those feelings would be spoiler content so once again I'm going vague and meaningless unless you've read this story. I really hate when garbage builds up to the point someone is forced to take care of it and regrets having waited so long but that's not as bad as cleaning up blood that's been around awhile AND blood can be telling in it's own way.
I am starting to question whether this series has an end game or if Meryn is ever going to have her baby. Not to be confused, I love love love the writing style and characters and can't get enough of this fictional world, I just want to see some meaningful progress so maybe Meryn can concentrate on other pressing issues, like world domination or jumping back into gaming or getting introduced to GoT (which she hasn't so far).......
I really have liked this series up until roughly this book and the one before. Meryn is hilarious and I mainly read these books for the awesomeness that she is - plus the warriors finding their mates and the story behind it all-
However. I think the author has lost some the overall story while she was writing these last two books. The chemistry between Vivi and Etain was hardly there. It was just written as an "of course." Plus we never really heard anything about Etain. It was his AND Vivi's story and we got mostly her and her brief insecurities. Instead of the darkness that was suppose to have been swirling inside her.
More spoilers- what happened to Meryn and her collecting allies to prevent something in the future that both Kendrick, Ryuu and Beth have all seen and mentioned but then was completely dropped.
Why did Kendrick look concerned when Meryn adopted the twins.
What does Gabriel's blood actually look like under a microscope? Big buildup for that and then nothing.
Why did the doors spring open for Vivian and no one mentioned it or thought it mysterious until they couldn't identify who came in?
What happened to Meryn and her brilliant analytical mind in this one??
What about Beth's shadow? Any development there. And since the shadow becomes darker in Magnus's presence, is his incapacity affecting her in any way?
What's happening on the Alpha estate?
What's happening with Kendrick and saving Keelan?
Why have ferals and the reapers suddenly gone on the back burner?
When a vampire has a bond, what exactly does that mean? It seems no vampire wants one but what does it actually mean? Is the vampire’s life now tied to that persons? If a person does have a bond, will their lifespan be extended?
What would have actually happened to Gavriel if his blood had been taken?
Was the other blood on the plates too long for them to not have to worry about bonding? And if not, shouldn’t they have earned the 3,0000+ yr old vampires they took it from?
However at first I thought this part of the series wasn't going to be very well-connected once Meryn left and I'm starting to see they're coming together. This will be the medical team if anybody needs.
(On a personal note- I’d like for one of their mates to be a woman from the Marines. That would be awesome -especially if she was written to have a feminine side too. One who could maybe give them new or different drills they could run through...)

Another great one in this series! I loved Vivi and Etain and their love story is sweet and hot, but what made this book for me is spending time with all the other characters. Aiden, Meryn, Gavriel, Kendrick, Grant, Rhea and the twins are my favorites and we get to see plenty of them. There are still many problems to solve and I can't wait for the next one. The romance of the next one concerns me a little because Micah might be a manwhore. I can't tell if he is just a huge flirt or sleeps around a lot. Anyone have any insight?
I liked this book better than the previous 3. In this one, stuff are finally getting back on track, there were some interesting developments in the city's political structure, some baddies were caught but there are still many questions.
And although they were caught, they did not disclose any new info, which is frustrating, Grrrrr!!
I still think these series should leave the dual pov in favor of multiple pov's, some scenes felt "forced" because the hero ou heroine needed to be present so we could see what was going on..
To me these character's could have been better explored, we know nothing really about Etain, except that he has twin siblings that are in the Queen's good favor. (Compared to the previous warriors revelations... Meh!).
Vivian Mercy is asked to help cure a virus that is spreading through Noctem Falls. Etian Vi'Aerlin knows his mate is about to arrive and he can't wait to be with her but he also wants her to be safe and with the way things had unfolded lately he is not sure that will be the case. There is more to Vivian than meets the eye though, a woman who has a squire and a women who is breaking through with a possible solution to the virus has Noctem Falls embroiled in another adventure.
I liked this one, was a bit surprised by Vivian she was not quite what I expected and her back story is fascinating. With each book there is another layer that is added in the story. Of course all the favorites are in the book but Meryn stood out as usual with her wacky ways. I liked Hal a lot, Vivian's squire he was a hoot.
Etain and Vivi are the MC and FMC of this novel but for me they did not hold my attention. In my opinion Etain was down played. There were several references to his power and the fear Noctem Falls has of Etain, but there never was a moment of his power on full display.
Vivi was pivotal to the ongoing plot of the series, I can understand why she was introduced to the series. Yet the same applied to her in the sense she needed something more to make this her story. I found myself more drawn to and invested in former characters than Etain and Vivi.
You may be wondering after all I have said how/why I still rated this an 4 star.....Alder clearly has a full picture of where this series is headed because the storyline fits together like a beautiful puzzle. There is no great sexy give me the shivers love story here but the storyline is extremely compelling. This is one of the VERY few series where I have been able to overlook no steam flying off the pages due to the complex and well placed plot.
April 2020 I re-read it during my big series re-read, and I have to admit it wasn't as bad as it felt on the first read. It could be, because I re-read the books back to back...noting came in between them and probably because I wasn't wondering who was who in that massive cast...phew. It made a big difference. I still don't like the fact that this book was all insta-love, though.
This time around I give it 3 stars.
September 2017 I didn't like this as much as the other books. I waited for My Angel to be released and when it fell flat. Too high expectations? I'm not sure...
I don't know if it was me, but the cast it massive and everyone and their squire gets page time, but the most important persons, namely Vivi and Etain only get sex scenes. Wow. Okay, I mean they're mates, but mating has to be more than that. And it's insta-insta-love. To the point that it feels unrealistic and annoying. I'm really not one to hate insta-love books, I love shifter books and insta-love is a given with this type of story, BUT...I want to at least see some relationship building. And not just sex. Vivi practically jumps Etain, when she first sees him. Funny? No! Crazy! It pains me to say this, but I'd like to see some development in the overall story. I've had enough of finding a cure for the virus. Also, I miss the crazy humor...this one wasn't the least bit humorous.
2.5 stars
I hope the next book gets better.
BTW...the best scene was then the arrogant Vamps learned who Gavriel is...
I love the way this author portrays the fae. Tall, elegantly graceful with a golden glow to surround their gorgeous visage. The ongoing story line just keeps getting interesting. This series is one that I can not imagine ending. Luckily we have two more pillar cities to visit and Keelan to rescue, oh and I feel like Sascha is really meant for Penny. I can’t wait to read the next book to see what happens next.
Lovely story! We love the new couple Vivian an epidemiologist arrives at Noctem Falls to help the children. Soon enough she finds her mate, Etian Vi'Aerlin the fae of the unit! I really love the story and the whole gang and of course i must not forget to say. Every time Meryn talks i am waiting for a disaster to happen or to lol!!! I am excited for the new book with main character the womanizer Micah!!!
Book 9 already and we are still in vampire city and they call in help with the sick children from Vivo a vampire doctor. And she's the mate to the Far guard of the city. Another fun and r book with the crew we all love.
I want it now! Not later but i have too. I also pre-ordered it as well.
Well, reading this book finally for the third time since i got it. Once again, she blows my mind with a amazing book. I love it lots. It has a few sad parts within the book but it will have you laughing as well. I can't wait for the next book to come out now.
Meryn is still my all time favorite character within this series. She is so cool and great character to read. If you are starting this series, go back to My Command to read and then read the next books within the series before this one.
Recommend to all who likes paranormal romance books, comedy scenes and great characters.
Note, I'm still getting tired of having only paranormal mates in Noctem Falls. Please change it up!
My Angel is book 9 in the Bewitched and Bewildered series, with the main couple of this book being Vivian and Etain. One thing I really enjoy about this series is that the characters from all the previous books still play such a strong part in the storyline, so if you have a favourite from a previous book there is a good chance they will still feature strongly in the ongoing story. I have to say my favourite has always been Meryn, so I was happy to see her being her usual snarky, humorous self in this story.
So, if I enjoy this series so much, why 3 stars??? Well, I just didn't find the main couple of this book, Vivian and Etain, as engaging and interesting as couples in the previous books. I still enjoyed the continuation of the storyline, and look forward to reading the next book - but I did find I was more interested in the appearances throughout the story of all the couples from previous books than this couple.
I absolutely LoVe this series and loved this book too. But this one had issued the others didn't. First, there were all the errors. I don't think any of the books is really well edited but this one felt like it had no editing done at all. The was a lot of grammar mistakes and typos. The second thing didn't work all that well for me was the main couple. Not that I didn't like them, I really did they had chemistry... But for the first time in this series I have found that all the other characters took over the story a bit too much. I know that many have found it to be a problem a few books past but I was okay with it until now. The new couple had very little page time.
Oh that being said it is still at 3.5 star for me. It is still had heat, it still had humor, and all our I beloved characters from the previous books where there making it all wonderful.
Yet another amazing book....I shouldn't be surprised at this point. I swear reading about Meryn just makes my day so much better.
Etain and Vivi were HOT. And I mean from the very start because Vivi just full on sat in his lap the minute they met. How yummy LOL!
I always loved Etain but Vivi cemented herself on my good side when she stood up for my girl, Meryn and helped her face her insecurities. She is a powerhouse!!!
I don't mention the plot a lot in my reviews but that doesn't mean I don't love it because it is so intriguing!!! Now we discovered so much in this book and people I won't speak of because spoilers, rightfully claimed their ancestry which was so fun to read.
Also can't forget Felix our little sprite!!! He proved himself even more as the little warrior he is :)
Now something BIG happened to someone I love so I really hope he's alright!!!!
Love this series and of course, I love Meryn! But this book was a little disappointing for me, don’t get me wrong, I like this book very much and I will be reading the next, because I just can’t have enough of these people. But, when I read a romance book, I like the H/h to be the center of the story, and the rest should be happening around them; not the other way around. I could not relate with the H/h in this book, their love story felt like an annoyance, I kept jumping the pages in which they were together just to know what was going on in the city, I felt like, “what is the point to read anything about them? They are already settle, in love and happy from chapter 2. Anyway, I can’t wait for the next book, hopefully there will be more to the next love story, but right now I’m more concern with Magnus than the next couple.
This ongoing saga has its own myths, legends, magic and humour so sometimes for everyone. It like a huge web that we tumble into and get bound too but wear as a spider sucks you dry Alanea lets her words flow onto the page for your sustenance. The characters are all individual but compliment each other perfectly even the darker ones. The storyline is ongoing and forever evolving with twits and turns popping up keeping you guessing and coming back for more just to see what happens to everyone. So glad to see some of the older characters coming back into the story. Well Alanea has done it again and I can't wait for my next fix of my literary addiction
If I could give more than five stars I would. Everything about this book in the series was great. A page turning, laughter and tear inducing, nail biting read.
Vivian and Etain were great as a couple and I loved that she was a Vamp. Their story unfolds effortlessly amid the chaos that the virus is causing. Her squire is a gem and will fit in with the others perfectly.
Our Meryn is still the blunt woman we love and Vivian’s names for her are great. We get to see more of Kendrick, one of my favorite characters, be the “big brother “ he was meant to be. Aiden shines as the mate Meryn deserves, Gavriel steps up and proves why he is the Dark Prince and douche bags are outed.
It was nice to see Etain and Vivi not fight each other on the mating, instead they fought with what mattered most, the sickness hitting their people. Vivi jumped right in to help, coming up with a great cure. What I found most interesting about Vivi was her past and how she used that, along with the other allies we have come to love, to fight back, to take a stand against those vampires that seem hell bent on hurting people to further their own agenda. It's a good thing Meryn is there to help stay one step ahead of them. So many big changes in this one it will be interesting to see where things go from here.
Another fantastic story in the series. I love that all my favourite characters are still so prominent. It was great to meet Vivi and get to know Etain better. Meryn is just as fabulous as ever. Can't wait for Micah's story. I'm assuming after that the story will turn to the fae city - these books can't come out quickly enough for me! Highly recommend.
I have enjoyed this series so much and love all the characters. My only wish is that there was a table of characters at the beginning of the book to help keep track. So many characters with time between books makes it hard sometimes to remember who is who. I love all the quirkiness of the characters, especially Meryn. I kinda feel a bit let down though that nothing in the storyline was completed in this book. I had expected the virus problem would have been resolved and how long will Meryn be pregnant? I will continue to read this series because they feel like family, but I do hope the next book has more meat to the storyline and not just someone finding their mate.
This author never fails me with her books. I wait very impatiently for the next new release that I pre order everytime because I know I love her stories and whatever is next will be no different. Its such an easy read!. Although the author jam packs these books full of information and little clues about what's happening, I don't feel forced when reading them. I laugh hard, love long and get mad angry. I feel a little of everything reading these story's that never fail to give all the feels. I appreciate how well she keeps the past characters interwoven into the current story although these books are set around the mates it honestly feels like a family affair. I love when she brings in new characters to love and gives us sneaky peaks at who's next. The story is perfect as always. It gives me everything I'd hoped to have in here and more. I'm always left satisfied when I've finished reading them. That's not to say I wouldn't want more because id be lying ...
I loved it and cannot recommend this series enough if you love PNR, humour and a good romance with a disfunctional family setting and lots of happenings, this has that and more by the boat load.
A little too quick and for a book 9 the series as a whole is being dragged out but not the individual stories and relationships just overall plot. I want an ending to the virus and maybe a new antagonist. Liked this one pretty well. 4.25 stars.
Once again another great read by Alanea Alder I can't wait to see how it plays out if a cure will be found? And excited to see all these babies come into the world of Bewitched and Bewildered
(2.5-3 stars) But, I gotta continue on because we still have no resolution to the virus and Meryn is STILL preggers. Sheesh. My OCDemoness is just laughing at me now.
