Resisting Mr Rochester

Rate this book
Twists on old favourites. Classic tales, Jane Eyre and A Christmas Carol, inspired these witty contemporary romances.Cara Truelove has always been a romantic, burying her head in books and dreaming of being swept off her feet by her very own Brontë hero. When she was a gullible teenager, she believed boyfriend Seth to be a modern-day brooding Heathcliff. Fourteen years later, when Seth has proved to be more like Homer Simpson, Cara vows never to fall in love again, and turns her back on romance for good.Leaving Seth behind, Cara secures a job as nanny at Morland Hall on the Yorkshire Moors, but is shocked to discover her new employer is none other than the tall, dark, and disturbingly handsome Mr Rochester. Her resolve to be more level-headed is soon tested when strange things begin to happen at Morland Hall. Why is Mr Rochester's mother hidden away upstairs? What are the strange noises she hears from the attic? Why is the housekeeper so reluctant to leave her on her own? And where is Mr Rochester's mysterious wife?As events unfold, Cara knows she must keep a cool head, curb her imagination – and resist Mr Rochester at all costs. After all, one Brontë hero in a lifetime is more than enough for any woman. Two would be downright greedy. Wouldn't it?A sparkling contemporary romance with a gothic twist!

How could I let myself fall for Mr Rochester when I'd only just escaped the clutches of Heathcliff? This is a quote taken straight from the pages of Resisting Mr Rochester by Sharon Booth. You totally want to read it now don't you? Like many, I have read both Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights this is an awesome contemporary mash-up of the two written with Sharon Booth's strong human interest themes and flair for true romance. Cara is rolling in the deep with Seth when strict Great Grandmother Reed dies leaving her a piano. You will be fuming when you find out what Seth does but then so glad about Cara's choices. I especially enjoyed the use of the attic rooms in Moreland Hall, great for letting the story unfold.

I think I need to warn you that this is going to be a totally uncritical review – I might even gush a little. This book was just gorgeous, sheer enjoyment from beginning to end. I said I needed a bit of a cuddle, and that’s exactly what this book delivered.

Being a fan, I loved the Brontë allusions, so cleverly done – Cara’s disappointment with her very imperfect Heathcliff and her discovery instead of the wonderful Mr Rochester in his stately pile, complete with ward Adele, housekeeper and strange goings on in the attic. But there’s really a bit of everything in this book – family drama and confrontation, secrets and lies, a bit of a mystery, a journey of self-discovery, and a romance that develops just perfectly and makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I adored Cara from the very beginning – she’s such a wonderful character, with a wry sense of humour and a warmth you can feel, and I was so angry for her at the way she was taken advantage of at every turn and made to believe that she wasn’t as worthy as everyone else. In fact, every character, no matter how peripheral to the story, is perfectly drawn – I have a particularly soft spot for Cara’s lovely father. I also fell unreservedly for Mr Rochester – and would defy any reader not to feel the same.

Sharon Booth writes quite beautifully – shifting with absolute ease from humour (the texted poems from Seth, with their more mundane postscripts, are just perfect, and very funny…) through sadness, strong emotion, and with superb descriptions of the setting of Moreland Hall and the Yorkshire Moors. I loved the secret garden, wanted to sit on that swing and inhale the perfume of the pink-tinged white roses too – if Mr Rochester could join me there too, my life would be complete.

I was going to say that this was a perfect summer read – but it was actually a perfect read for any time of year. Read it in the depths of winter, and it’ll bring a perfect inner glow to your dark days. I really loved this book – but you can tell, can’t you?

I love love love this book, this retelling was so good and not many authors can do this but Sharon Booth has done it. I loved the twists from this story and how it obviously changes from the original Jane Eyre novel. I don’t often give full five star ratings but there was nothing really bad about this book, other than it finished so soon. As Jane Austen has said “If a book is well written, I always find it too short”.
A fantastic book that has definitely earned a place in my favourite books list.
Also I could totally see this as a tv drama or a movie 🙂

Cara fell in love at a very young age with her own Heathcliff. Problem is, he turned out to be a bad poet who expects her to support him. She finally gives up on him and gets a new job in Yorkshire as a nanny to a young girl. Her new problem is that her employer is Mr. Rochester.
I loved this book so much. While the plot is a contemporary version of Jane Eyre, this book is so much more. Ms. Booth writes exceedingly well and is also very funny. The romance between Ethan Rochester and Cara takes some different and surprising turns while staying true to the original. The little girl is named Adele (as in the original), but I laughed out loud when I read the reason why. Same with the lunatic in the attic.
A terrific book from a terrific author.

Absolutely fabulous!
It was such a pleasure reading this book, I keep saying this, but Sharon Booth is definitely an author to watch out for! She has outdone herself with this story. It's perfectly plotted, it provides the right balance between romance, comedy, and suspense, and don't I love her female characters! You can so easily identify with the heroine and albeit it's obviously a fictional story where a happy ending is expected, you'll find it is very real.
Definitely in my Top Ten for 2017. Highly recommended.

Really liked the first few chapters and Tamsin as a character really grew on me, but then half way through I felt the author was dragging it out a bit and it needed to quicken up. It got too modern and boring which was a shame because the premise as a whole was nice.

Cara is a lovely character, humble and modest, and a good sense of humour!

I did like the ending though. A modern twist on Brontë ‘s ….but if you like the classics stick with them!

"An extremely enjoyable read. Looking forward to part 2."

"I rather enjoyed it, fairly well written with strong characters, it had shades of the secret garden as well as Jane Eyre. I found it an easy relaxing read."

Enjoyed it

A really good read, got quite engrossed rather quickly. Loved the way so many smaller stories combined to make the whole. The main characters were instantly likeable, if you're looking for a nice relaxing Read this is it
