Adrian Roger's last written manuscript before his passing in 2005, has been edited and brought together by his son Steve, as a final joint work. When We Say Father takes the Lord's Prayer and breaks it down to its most basic components for readers to easily learn how to pray from the ultimate source, Jesus himself.
Adrian Rogers and Steve Rogers does an excellent job breaking down and explaining the Lord’s Prayer.
They share personal experiences and their journeys along the way so that it is easier for others to grasp the prayers meaning, how to pray using this example prayer and mostly the “who,” you are praying to.
I took the whole month of December to read this book and digest the meaning of this prayer, a decision I’m so glad I made. This is not a book you want to rush through and read. You want to come out learning more about prayer and what it means when we say Father.
LOVE the simplicity and frankness of this book. It has shown me that prayer is a special gift and a true joy. Nothing lies outside the reach of prayer except what lies outside of God's will.
When We Say Father: Unlocking the Power of the Lord's Prayer By Adrian Rogers and Steve Rogers
When we say Father we come to the name with certain expectations or disappointments all based on our previous experiences with our own fathers. But this is not how we should come before our Heavenly Father. Rather we need to reset our thinking because God our Father is so much more than what we've ever experienced in our current physical experience.
Prayer is a conversation with God and we've been given an example of how we are to begin this conversation with the Lord's Prayer. We are to come before God addressing his nurturing nature - that of an ideal father. We come before God addressing Him as Father but we must realize that He is not the Father to all but rather to those who have accepted His gift of being born into His family.
I really like When We Say Father and how each line of the prayer is addressed and explained - putting it into perspective for our own lives. When we pray we are to start out by addressing God directly exalting His name. We then ask for His will to be done - in other words, we put God and His wants first in our conversation. By putting God first we don't focus on ourselves - who would start off a conversation with someone saying, "I want such-and-such and this-and-that." Self-focus distracts us from a full and meaningful conversation with God. Only after we focus on God do we ask Him to provide for our daily needs (when we worry about the day-to-day things we are insulting God by not trusting Him to provide). We follow this by asking for His forgiveness and His assistance to avoid temptations that would lead us into future sins. We end our conversation as we began it focusing on our Father, His kingdom, and His everlasting glory.
This is a lovely book that helps one to understand in a more complete way the gift of prayer. The small size makes it easy to handle and to keep readily handy. You'll want to reread this book as you grow in your daily prayer life with the various scripture references it will prove to be a valuable aid.
I was provided a review copy of this book by the publisher BH Publishing with no expectations of a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Many have heard the Lord's Prayer, quoted it, or maybe even studied it. I have done all 3, as well. However, there were a lot of golden nuggets tucked into the pages of this book. I think most of his illustrations drove home the point to me in a way that I hadn't ever thought of before. I had to write a lot down in my journal because I didn't want to ever forget them!
One of my favorite illustrations Adrian Rogers used was when he was talking about fellowship with God. He talked about how it's like when he flew with a pilot and the pilot allowed him to fly. So while they were in the air, he flew the plane. But then the time came for them to land and he handed the plane back over to the pilot who had way more experience in safely returning to the ground. He said "He could fly without me, I could not fly without him. But he allowed me to fly it with him, and we were having wonderful fellowship." I loved that illustration because it gave me a good visual of how we are in fellowship with God.
Another thing that I loved was when he got to the "forgive us our debts." He said "to forgive is costly. But when we forgive, we gain a brother." I've never stopped to think about how much forgiveness costs. I mean, yes, I do in terms of what it cost Jesus. But it really does cost me something everytime I choose to forgive.
He also said "Praise and irritation cannot coexist. Praise and pride cannot live together." This was a huge reminder to me that when I become irritated or prideful, it's time for a heart check. Something is obviously wrong when I have those in my heart. I want praise to be my response, not a complaining, irritate, prideful spirit.
There are many books in the market that talk about the Lord's Prayer. Don't overlook this book just because of it's size. It holds a lot of nuggets in it that will challenge you, convict you, and help clarify things for you.

I received this book free from B & H Publishers in exchange for my honest opinion of this book.
This is the first book by Adrian Rogers I have read. I appreciate his simple, no-nonsense approach to topics and his use of understandable and relevant examples. This is the best book on prayer I have ever read. Mr. Rogers goes through the disciples prayer step by step and applies each line as they pertain to issues in our everyday life that we can take before the King of Kings. A memorable line is when Rogers says, "Prayer is the most untapped resource in America." This book is well written, not technical or filled with religious jargon. This book will get you motivated to pray and teach you why it is important to pray and what to pray about. I feel like I know God better after reading this book. I highly recommend.
Adrian Rogers’ book, When We Say Father, is an exposition of the Lord’s Prayer, and, as such, it serves as a helpful guide to prayer. Inspirational in tone, it is highly practical. The author, who served as pastor of Bellvue Baptist Church for many years, shares personal accounts of his own experience of prayer along with a number of amusing anecdotes. The book reads essentially like a collection of sermons—very helpful, uplifting, easy-to-apply sermons. If you need some motivation to pray or if you are looking for a guide to prayer or if you just want to be inspired, read this book. It will take you to your knees.
Being a senior, I find that I prefer to read a book and hear it at the same time. Pastor Rogers was one of my favorite Bible authorities. When you feel you have a reasonable understanding of the Bible he can present with his writing that you just thought you did. Great read!
I really enjoyed this book. Prayer is like a coming home if you will. The basic, simplistic approach to prayer is a reminder that it's the heart. The words do not have to be lofty they must be authentic and mixed with faith. There are stories recounted that will stir your faith. God hears and answers. You have to know His voice and yield. Rogers repeats the points that we need to commit to memory. I will refer back to this book again and again.
