Once she was human. Now she's something else altogether.
Indigo Delta is an assassin for hire. Half human, half android, she’s an elite fighting machine. She follows orders without question, kills without emotion, and gets the job done with minimal fuss.
Then she meets him: Ryker Victor. Her next target.
Ryker falls for Indigo the moment he lays eyes on her. Granted, she is trying to kill him, but he’s ready for her. After all, he’s also a creation of the Institute—one they desperately want to silence. Now he has to convince Indigo that he’s telling the truth and that the Institute was founded on lies they will do anything to hide.
Heart of Darkness is an action-packed sci-fi romance between a man with a mission and a woman with a secret that jeopardizes them both.
Heart of Darkness by J.A. Hinchey is a sci-fi romance novella that tells the fast-paced story of Indigo Delta and Ryker Victor. Indigo is an assassin with a mission…take out, Ryker Victor. She’s been good at taking out her targets to this point, but she’s warned that he’s going to be the most difficult that she has taken on. Ryker is prepared when she shows up because she’s not been the first, but this time, the Institute is ready for his usual tricks. Heart of Darkness is absolutely a fast-moving story that gives you just enough backstory to give you an idea of how Indigo became the assassin that she is. Her history is tragic and disease took her, but it was the Institute that really ended her at the end of the day. They brought her back but with their own agenda in mind…creating an army of super-soldiers/assassins. She’s assigned a target; she hunts them down and takes them out. There are some steamy scenes between Indigo and Ryker and they really spice up the story. This story is smooth as butter, but I found myself disappointed at how smoothly things went for Ryker. I understand that he’s dealt with being hunted before, but I wanted Indigo to be the one who threw him for a loop. I guess I just wanted more drama to happen and not for everything to essentially go according to plan. I know I’m being nit-picky with this aspect, but I was also disappointed that the title doesn’t tie into the story itself. I wanted to know what the heart of darkness was. Was it the Institute? The individuals who ran the Institute? I am rating this story 4 out of 5 stars. The story flows smoothly, but I felt that it was a little too smoothly/perfect. I expected more tension, more drama…something unexpected to happen, but that really wasn’t the case. If you’ve read books by this author and enjoyed them, then I think that this fast-paced sci-fi action romance will be a good fit for you.
This was my first time reading a book from this author. I am impressed. The story is about Indigo and Ryker - two humans who have been saved from dying but are enhanced artificially. The story held so much interest in reading how Ryker saved Indigo from the clutches of the institute. I only hope we can read more or Ryker and Indigo
Skillful Sexy A.I. Assassin's, Faced Paced Action That Gets The Blood Pumping!!!
A Smoking Hot A.I. Assassin Clad In Black Leather, A Killer Storyline, Fast Paced Action And Sex To Shock!
I've had a copy of this Book in my Kindle Library sitting unread, for quite some time. Having put a priority on Ms Hinchey's Series over Stand Alones. As I love, love, love a great binge read, Who doesn't?
With Jane's re-branding & updating covers and storylines I'm glad I finally got to read it!
OMG How Damn Hot Does Indigo Look In That Black Leather Get Up? Talk About A Smoking Hot Bod (she can almost make this straight woman, turn)!
I really enjoyed this short story Novella. Reading in just one afternoon. I loved the storyline, the characters, the author, The Terrific Trifecta!!!
My biggest disappointment with this story is it's length & whilst reading, came upon this same conclusion. Wishing several chapters were extended, better explained in depth, with much fuller details and content.
I thought some chapters were cut way too short & others completely omitted crucial details and planning, but I can not expand on it here without giving away plots & causing spoilers alerts. And that I just won't do!
One chapter in particular, Chapter 16 (or the first part of it), seems it would have served a better purpose concurring right in the midst of the biggest, most crucial climatic scene during Chapter 15. Therefore for me, it missed the mark and its desired effect upon me as a reader.
Unfortunately more than one chapter seemed rushed & over before it began but you'll know which one I'm speaking of once read, with so many of the details usually included in a scene like this totally omitted! and while it did not ruin the book for me, it left me totally deflated & disappointed. I felt as if I was missing out on something that should have been incredibly special! A missed opportunity by Ms Hinchey to be a 5 ⭐ Book and on the Best Seller List, The Top 100 or An Award Winner for Jane as an author. Well I guess it's never too late to Update, Extend & Excel!
Jane's Characters, no matter whether they play major or minor roles are always top quality and easily work their way into your heart (like maggots through rotting meat). So you're either rooting for them, wanting them to win or their so hateful & diabolical you can't help, but love to hate them and can't wait to see them come to a dramatic and timely end (hopefully suffering some of the same heartache & agony they've caused those along the way (for its fate after all, the good guys always win or ususlly). For the real bad guys / characters, I love dreaming up the ways, I wish to see them die! As long as they die screaming in agony, I'm good ! Sicko much, you bet (but only with the diabolical bastards)!
Once again Ms Hinchey throughly excels in her love & sex scenes and is in her element. Her writing is truly impeccable and of the highest calibre. I can find no fault here at all. Others may not appreciate certain language of body parts, but here it truly fits the narrative. The new emotions, the full depths of hunger in the throes of passion suddenly switched on and felt by Indigo in such unexpected and primal ways.
Ryker and Indigo fall hard, fast and furious like many relationships in Sci-Fi / Fantasy novels, especially those formed under extenuating circumstances and high pressure situations. This pairing will have many obstacles to face and overcome that most couples could never even compenplate. We see the sparks fly and passions ignite, at the simple touch of the others skin, sensing the magic this twosome can become!
I can't comment to much on the world building here as it's set in our own world, in our own time and part of the everyday lifestyle and world around us, apart from the scenes at the Institute, but there's no detailed description of the premises and the equipment contained in training rooms, science labs, medical bay and Indigo's quarters, other than the banded glasses for uploading data storage and her shower & bed. Though both of Ryker's premises include some pretty incredible technology and devices including an MRI machine which can cost anywhere between $150,000 - $2.1 Million dollars Australian 🤑👀🤑! It sure pays to be a techno wizard & well versed in cyber warfare!
I RATE HEART OF DARKNESS 4.3 ⭐ OUT OF 5⭐!
I recieved an ARC Copy of this book from the author and this is my fair, honest and impartial review.

This story has an interesting concept. I can't reveal too much, because it would probably give away too much. I will say that it has to do with humans and android assassins. I liked the concept and the characters. Normally I'm not big on novellas because they always feel rushed to me, but the pacing of this one was actually decent...until it got towards the end. Then it kind of time jumped a couple of weeks and skipped to the ending of a conflict that I had thought would have had more of a focus put on it. In doing this, it kind of left me feeling like something was missing. This may be because this story is a novella, not a full length novel. I still enjoyed it though, enough to want to read other books from this author. I'm also curious what would be next for these characters in this world. Even if we don't find out, it's fun to think about. I am voluntarily reviewing this book, gifted to me by the author with no obligation.
The only thing I didn't like about this book was it was too short! I was just getting into it and it was over. I can tell it was originally written to be part of a box set. I hope Jane eventually fleshed it out and writes a sequel.
Indigo is part human and part AI. She is sent to kill bad people. When she is tasked with killing Ryker Victor she discovers that "bad" is in the eye of the beholder. Although she does find some parts of him to be bad.
Ryker used to work for the same people Indigo works for. Now they send people like her to kill him, and he tries to save them. He recognizes her for what she is as soon as he sees her. Now all he has to do is capture her before she kills him.
I received a copy of this book from the author with no attached obligation. My review is voluntary because I try to review everything I read.
This was an imaginative short story about humans who are turned into assassins. It was fast paced and entertaining whilst also making you think about being human and man's desire to subvert humanity for nefarious purposes. There were enough plot turns to keep me interested and the last two chapters tied the story up nicely. Jane Hinchey has written a self-contained story and while I liked Indigo and Ryker very much, it is good to have a complete storyline and not have to wait for the next instalment or have a short story drawn out unnecessarily over several books.
This was a short novella that had a very interesting concept. I won't give it away, but you'll know when you read about it. The characters were appealing, though I felt kind of sad for what happened to them. The plot jump between chapters 14 and 15 was very jarring. It felt like I missed something. I even double checked to make sure there wasn't any missing chapter(s). All in all I enjoyed the book and if you like Sci-Fi romance, grab it up.
I received an ARC copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it.
This is a well written sci-fi story with strong characters and an interesting story line. The author brings the story to life with her descriptive writing and detailed scenes. She pulls you in with all the suspense as well as the romance. There's tons of action in this short fast paced story. I was hooked from start to finish reading and would recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
Sometimes endings can bring about beginnings. This book seems made for what is happening in our world today. Gave me chills reading it. As a retired nurse, who spent several years in the medical research field, this is something that would not surprise me one bit to find it was really happening. A shocking story of betrayal but turned into something powerful. A great read by a great author! Well done!
This book was a great read!! Even if this is not your normal genre, try it anyway! You'll be happy you did. I was pleasantly surprised. I would normally have passed this up. Mostly because it's not my normal genre, also because it's a novella. But, I thought the characters were strong, and the plot was great. This author's style of writing is such, that despite the novella format, she manages to make you feel like you've just read a full length novel. That's not easy!
Short sci- fi story with action, suspense, deceive, romance, passion and bionic altered characters with a deadly mission. I’m a fan of this kind of stories with cyborgs and the very human issue of facing death for me, it was touching. The story had mystery and a satisfying outcome that entertained and stimulated my imagination with its interesting situations that left me eager for more.

I really enjoyed this book, It has a fast pace right from the get go. It's something different from a lot of books in this genre, although you can kind of speculate what is going on it is still a shock when you realise what is happening! Indigo is a killer, pure and simple. The book hit’s the road running. Indigo is on an "assignment" a kill, the writing does more than tell a story it paints a picture, I could see what Indigo was seeing and how she is seeing it this always the sign of good writing if you can envision what is actually happening purely with words. The assignment goes flawlessly (obviously) and when she returns to the shadowy institute you can see how desperate she is to please her superiors, she knows she is worth so much more than the assignments they are sending her on, she is quicker, faster and more better than the basic jobs she is being given, she is ruthless, a machine. Yet there is another side to her, she is having strange dreams, she is seeing events happen in front of her that on waking leave her in a state of, could it be? Well …fear? She checks her systems for faults but none are found, yet she is reluctant to tell anyone particularly her commander. Especially when he calls on her to fulfil a very special job, the one she has been waiting for, the one that proves to her all her hard work has paid off and she is trusted to succeed where others before her have failed she is ready no she is MADE for this job…… He is waiting. He knows they are coming, he does not know who it will be or what they will look like but he knows they are coming. In fact they have come before. More than once! He even make it easy. Making sure they can find him, so he can take them out. What enfolds is a really well thought out short story, as a standalone and as a start of a series.
So I have sung it’s praises I have told you I thought the writing is brilliant and the story unusual for its genre why only 4 stars. Well it is for 2 reasons. Both of which are a very personal picky reasons and neither of which will stop you enjoying this book, in fact the first reason is the book itself this is a short story/novella a bit like one of those that are written as a prequel for a series that’s been tacked on after the series has started and is well underway. But it could have been a novel a full length novel, the last part of the book could have been done in a lot more detail, what for me was a big part of the story was kind of stuck on and hurried through, not Indigo’s realisations it is handled beautifully actually and there was a real emotional chord struck there, but the other part regarding the institute was tied up in a chapter instead of 4 or even 5 chapters, it felt like a missed opportunity and though it does not ruin the story it did leave me feeling a bit deflated. The other reason, well the sex, to be quite frank it is not required, it could have been done differently it felt as if it was thrown in to “flip her switch” but again this could have been done another way. Still if, you like your sex hot and fast, your action much the same, and an HEA as the cherry on the top, then you will love this book. Jane Hinchey is a great author and delivers a very well painted story for me this story had a little bit of everything, Action, Romance, Science Fiction and a little miracle sprinkled on the top. ENJOY I was given the opportunity to read an ARC of this copy and chose to leave a review
Quick, fast-paced novella. I loved the flashbacks that gave us some insight into what happened to get Indigo where she is today. Ryker has a great vision for the future, and I could easily see this novella being turned into an ongoing series. There's a few shades of the themes behind the original RoboCop, where a person is transformed into a cyborg by a private corporation for private gain and that person has to "break through" the programming and somehow mesh who they used to be with who they are now (now don't yell at me here, and please go back to the original movie, which won 5 Saturn Awards, rather than the kinda cheesy TV show and sequels - this is not a slam against the book but rather a comparison to a well received, albeit now somewhat dated, film).
All in all, I enjoyed the plot, both the content and the pacing. In a way it was a SciFi-lite book, and would be a great choice for someone who enjoys romance and maybe wants to branch out into SciFi without getting lost in the technical jargon full fledged SciFi often relies on. I felt the romance was really a secondary plot line, but it needed to be in order to allow Indigo to resolve things from her previous life. The ending, while not a cliffhanger, certainly left some room open for a continuation of the story, and I sincerely hope Ms. Hinchey follows through with a sequel. This review is for an ARC of the book.
This is a full book no cliff hanger ending and a totally enjoyable read. Indigo is an assassin recruited to a secret agency but that is not all she is. She is also a highly enhanced android who used to be a full human. She has no life outside of the organisation but lately she has been dreaming about another woman whose life she is witnessing unfolding like a story. Indigo has not told anyone about the dreams in case they decommission her as they had done to another assassin deemed faulty. Alpha who is handling all of the assassins for the organisation has now assigned Indigo to a new target named Ryker and has warned her that this one will not be easy to terminate. Alpha and the members of the organisation have been keeping secrets from their assassins and Indigo is about to find out that what she has been dreaming may not be a dream at all. A big thank you to Jane Hinchey for the wonderful review book. Loved it. Hope one day you will turn it into a series. Highly recommend this book and author .

This is a great new read from this author. A departure from what I am used to but really enjoyed. Well written plot and story line that was very engaging from the beginning. Love the characters that have been created and really like the way they engaged throughout. Really enjoyable sexy read.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
I was given an ARC and voluntarily choose to review. I loved this story. Though I'm not normally a sci-fi gal the story intrigued me so I just had to read. If you're not normally into sciffy, as I call it, don't necessarily dismiss it. You're not inundated with lots of technobabble and the story and characters are fab. Go on, you might surprise yourself. So much happens in what feels like such a short time. You experience two lives in one. It has its sad moments, intense moments and everything in between moments. I don't know how Jane managed to craft a story that encompasses so much. I loved Indigo/Carrie her character goes through the gamut of experience and emotion and you're right there with her. Ryker is there for her with whatever she needs. They make such a good couple. If I have one criticism of the book it's that there seemed to be jumps that left me a bit confused and I'd have liked the story filled in and to know what happened. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
A fantastic novella that needs to be blown into a series! Wow! I love all the series from this author, but this is the first time I have read this series or even this genre. I LOVED it! Once I started, I couldn't put it down and since it was a novella, the page turning ended to fast for me. I loved Indigo who worked for a secret organization as an assassin who was turned from a human into an android giving her some enhanced power. When she finally received the assignment of her dreams, to assassinate Ryker, who previously could not be touched but she was ready. Could she succeed or will it be the death of her or is there something more? What about the dreams she keeps having? I just couldn't put this down and look forward to more about Indigo and Ryker. This seemed to end too fast for me. That is a compliment since I want to read some more of this series. I received and ARC from the author but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Wow, what a fast paced sci fi romance story. I whipped through this one as I didn’t want to put it down. I loved Indigo and Ryker. As it was a novella, everything moved quickly. This book was full of action, with some romance thrown in for fun!! It was such an interesting concept, the Institute saving people, adding in some kick ass technology and artificial intelligence and turning them into assassins. But all is not what it seems. Read to find out what happens when Indigo is sent to kill Rkyer!! If you are into science fiction with a bit of steamy romance and sex thrown in you won’t be disappointed.
I am voluntarily reviewing the book Heart of Darkness by Jane Hinchey gifted to me by the author with no obligation.
I have been reading this author for some time, and I have missed a few of her previous titles. Since she is re-releasing some, I get to catch up. This novella was one such story I hadn’t read. I loved this peek into Ryker and Indigo’s love story. Ryker seemed so caring, and he wanted to do right by all the people still left at the company where they were made into assassins. I felt so much for Indigo when she had to confront her past. I do wish we had been able to see some parts of the plot instead of a wrap up, and I wish we had learned more of Ryker’s back story, but alas, that’s what happens in short stories/novellas. I am looking forward to more. Recommend! I was provided a copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

This was an interesting and well written book the characters are entertaining and well thought out, the main characters are two cybernetic humans but the story of how they became this way is what draws you into the story and keeps you hooked. The story is not overly long about 2-3 hours and it is an easy and enjoyable read, it has a bit of mystery, intrigue, romance and even a few steamy sex scenes everything you could possibly want in a book. If you enjoy a romance with a twist and an entertaining storyline with characters that keep you interested then you will enjoy this book.
I received a copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review.
I got this as an ARC for my honest opinion and review. I don't normally read sci-fi but something about the cover and story drew me to break my own rule. Indigo is only half human and the other half is android. She does what she is told without mercy. That is until she meets her next target. Ryker is like Indigo and a problem that the Institute wants to be shut down. He knows that she is there to kill him but he falls for her almost instantly. He wants to open her eyes to the Institute's lies. Will the machine part of her win out or will the human side? You will have to read and get that little tidbit of information.
This is an interesting quick read. Indigo is an engineered assassin. She does not know of any other life, until the dreams start. She is very confused, but has kept her secret from the 'Institute'. Her next target, Ryker, just might be able to help her. But it won't be smooth sailing. There was a lot of emotion in this story. Action on every page along with a bit of romance. I also loved reading it from Ryker's POV. I think this made the story all the more relatable. I had read this about two yrs ago and thought it could be a great start to a new series. Hopefully, now that the author has republished it, she will consider writing a follow up. I would love to revisit these characters.
Indigo was a great character whose genetics were altered to turn her into an assassin. When she is sent to assassinate Ryker she ends up under his control while he deprograms her to remember who she really was. This was a fast paced action packed read with great characters and a fantastic plot. Ryker and Indigo had great chemistry and some steamy sex and just added to the overall story. We learned about both of these characters and a couple of secondary characters along the way. I was gifted an advance copy of this book from Jane Hinchey and I am voluntarily reviewing this book.
WOW! Heart of Darkness is a great read. I couldn't stop once I started it. I devoured it in less than a day. Indigo was human, once, now she is an assassin and out to find her target. What she finds s much, much more. Ryker is her target and he has military skills. Indigo is just one of many that have been sent after him. This time it is different, he falls for the assassin. I can't wait to see if there is more to their story. I am voluntarily reviewing the book Heart of Darkness by Jane Hinchey gifted to me by the author with no obligation.
I love the blurb for this book and it describes it perfectly,,,,,Indigo Delta is an assassin for hire. Half human, half android, she’s an elite fighting machine. She follows orders without question, kills without emotion, and gets the job done with minimal fuss. Then she meets him: Ryker Victor. Her next target. What happens next is Indigo is slowly remembering her past life and love, until Ryker who is rescues her from the Organization who is turning people into assassins. Payback can happen..... when you have assassins. Good short novella, with lots of heat and no cliffhanger
Heart of Darkness is a pretty fast paced Sci-Fi thriller that tells the story of an assassin who use to be 100% human, but is not an Android working for an organization that gives her assignments to kill. A cog in a wheel, destined to obey, Indigo is starting to dream things, things she probably shouldn't be dreaming. She is starting to feel things for a new target - things she probably shouldn't be feeling. Things are starting to unravel in a world that was up until recently, used to be as black and white as salt and pepper. This is Indigo's story.
*voluntarily and honestly reviewed the ARC I received from the author*
Indigo is an android assassin, and when she gets her next target, things change for her... again? This was an interesting read. Pretty exciting, really hot with the sexy scenes, and I just really liked getting into a programmed head that's learning about human emotions and moments. It's cool, you know? It was a fast-paced romance with action, though the ending was a little fast, but overall pretty engaging.
Assassin...sent on assignment with little info. Target...found easily...too easily Memories and dreams....malfunction? Indigo has questions but learned that to voice them means trouble. Her new assignment may have answers. Everything changes including who she is...or thinks she is. Love this story. Fast paced with a great twist. Another fantastic story from Jane. I can see this stand alone screaming to be continued in a series at a later time
