Scott King is an author and photographer. He was born in Washington D.C. and raised in Ocean City, Maryland. He received his undergraduate degree in film from Towson University, and his M.F.A. in film from American University.
“DAD! A Documentary Graphic Novel,” King’s first book was published in Fall ’09. He is also the creator and writer of “Holiday Wars.”
King is a game photographer based in Texas. His most common shoots are for websites, online stores, and for other marketing needs. He also produces an annual calendar that highlights board and other hobby games.
King was first introduced to the entertainment industry in high school when he was hired as a production assistant on “Runaway Bride.” At the time, he served as a reporter for the school newspaper and although another student was assigned the article about the movie King was determined to write it. He snuck into a press conference where Gary Marshall was meeting with local media, so that he could out-scoop his fellow student. Durring the meeting King asked a few questions about how the movie would affect bus routes and local businesses. The next day he was hired and he’s been working in the entrainment industry ever since.
I quite enjoyed this book. Not only does the author have a laid back writing style that's easy to read, he throws in just the right amount of humor. He has done a good job of explaining the hows and whys of each chapter. At the end of each chapter, there's a short assignment. After completing the assignments I had a basic outline and a solid idea of how the story will go. The assignments highlighted a weak point in my own novel prep process, which in my case is knowing what the stakes will be.
I think this is a good book for writers who are struggling to create blurbs or who are still in the early stages of their writing career.
Useful book about what elements of a story are necessary and how to build a Story Pitch out of them that you can use as plotting device even if you’re a pantser. I disagree on the blurb chapter, though. The way King writes blurbs, I’d never buy the books he wants me to buy. A book saying ,buy me now‘ is one I will ignore. That usually means that the book isn’t good enough in itself and that the author is desperate to sell anything. Not the best way to go.
But apart from that this is one of very few writer‘s guides so far that actually had something worth reading in them.
I believe this book would help any author p!an and begin writing a fiction book. And, structurally, it could even help with non-fiction planning. Highly recommended guide.
If you have any interest at all in writing, Scott's method of teaching is unmatched. Working through a story pitch helped me solidify my idea from vague understanding in just a few hours.
This is just the kind of craft book I need right now: something to help me get a handle on my stories before I start writing them. I'm ready to give the story pitch method Scott King breaks down in this book a try. I loved the conversational style he used to lay everything out in a clear, simple manner. Worth the read!
