WW2 with superpowered people. But not the 4 color comic clean cut stories you are used to. Extremely violent and graphic depiction of what superpowers would look like in a war situation. Excellent storyline. Very recommended
This is really developing into something special. I hope there will be more volumes. This time out, the Germans, realizing they lack the manpower to control any of the territories they've conquered, set their eyes on invading the US, with the goal of terrorizing the populace and shutting down war production. A couple of survivors of England's surrender bring documents from Bletchley and Alan Turing manages to decipher a previously unknown, brand new class of ubermensch, the Zephyr, whose power seems to be based in speed. And a previously unknown Japanese battleship lays waste to San Diego. The artwork really develops all the horror of this continuation of the war with super-powered soldiers, particularly in an issued devoted to the aftermath of the destruction of Boston.
Everyone thought the fascists were done for, but new technologies enabled them to mutate and strike back, swiftly putting the forces which - however imperfectly - stood for progress and decency on the back foot. Now they rampage, seemingly unchecked, through a reeling USA.
But enough about Trump and chums - Gillen's alternate world tale of an even worse Second World War remains as harrowing as ever.
(And yes, I plan to keep on doing variations on this joke for as long as our own timeline keeps providing dystopian material for it)
A tragedy that this series has been left incomplete, I am a big fan of this entire work and I keep revisiting both Uber and Uber:Invasion. Keep all thoughts about the phone app aside and know that Uber here stands for Ubermensch aka "superman" the word got around during the 20th centeruy thanks to Nietchze and the German obsession with social darwinism. The Plot: what if right before the end of World war 2 when the Soviet red army storm Berlin the German army counter attacks with supersoldiers, here they are called Panzermensch as in Tank men.
The original Uber series dealt with the Europe and Pacific theatre. where we learn and understand how these super-soldiers work, what are the technicalities of their production and the strategy/tactics used by the combatants.
Uber: Invasion brings the battle to the United States. DUN-DUN-DUN I cannot reccomend the whole series enough. It's worth your time.
What if the Germans had developed The Bomb at the end of WWII, not in time to win the war, but enough to make everyone lose? And what if The Bomb wasn't a bomb, but superpowers developed from an ancient and/or alien recipe? And what if the other "players" in WWII got their hands on that research?
The result is a controversial comic series, which so far was able to work from existing knowledge WRT possible alternate scenarios for WWII. But this second "volume" (not a spin-of but a sequel) is going way out on a limb, imagining a lot more than previously. And it poses a confrontational question: what if the USA also experienced massive losses on its home-front and encounters similar extensive destruction as Europe experienced?
Should I be reading this on public transportation? The cover features bold Iron Crosses and everything about it screams NAZI POWER! Not to mention the main story is Germany might win WW2 with super powered soldiers! The art is bloody and graphic the way Avatar likes to do. Gillen's writing saves everything. Even handed the killing blows no human seems smart enough to use it. We go back and forth on hurting each other and wasting the lives we claim so precious. This volume definately builds you up just to stomp on you in the end. It's a world of interesting or boring and it's certainly not boring. .
