I'll tell you right off that I don't like reading my own bios, let alone writing them. It's like tooting your own horn. But if you're here, then you want to know something about me. So how about I break some ‘writers have a glamorous life' myths first off.
Myth 1: Writers have always been writers. Not me. I was a licensed cosmotologist for years, and didn't even put pen to paper until I was 30. (with an infant and 3 year old) It took me 3 years to write my first book, and while it taught me a lot, it was dreadful ! Got rejected 6 times flat out. I burned it in the back yard when I sold my 20 th book. I've kept the first pages to remind myself of how far I've come.
Myth 2: writers have a staff to take care of them and their homes while they write. I wish! I don't have a maid, a cook, or anyone who works for me, except maybe Shelley, who maintains this site. Like most women out there, I do all the cooking, cleaning, bills, shopping, etc. Sometimes I can be seen driving the riding lawnmower over our 2 acres. That's not a complaint. I'm a Marine's wife, and my husband was gone a lot, so I had to do it. I'm the only female in a house of men, so I pretty much rule too. And as the daughter, wife, and now the mother of US Marines, believe me, I can give orders when need be.
Myth 3. Writers work when the muse hits them. If I did, I'd never meet a deadline. Writing isn't about the muse coming to you; it's about unleashing bottled creativity and giving it freedom on paper. Every writer I know feels a deep internal need to tell their particular story and hope you're entertained. Writers HAVE to write. Yeah, sure, sometimes the creativity isn't moving like we want, but like everyone who faces some problem, I go to my friends and they come through in a punch. By the way, I work at my job from about 7 am till 4, sometimes later if it's going great and I don't want to stop. Weekends are for playing, projects or gardening. I actually love pulling weeds; it makes my mind drift to good places.
Myth 4: Writers get paid oodles of money. Oodles?? If I did, I'd have a staff and a better-looking office. But I get to go to work in the worlds' sloppiest clothes.
Myth 5: Once a writer sells a book, they can sell anything else. Want to see my rejection file? I could wallpaper a bathroom with it. To keep selling is the really hard part of this job. However, my idea of a great story isn't often blending with the editors. It's frustrating and often, it hurts, since the books writers create have, without a doubt, a piece of them inside. But then, if you can't take it, then this isn't the business for you.
My second book (#1 being the dreadful one I burned) My Timeswept Heart was a finalist in the Romance Writers of America, Golden Heart contest for unpublished works. I didn't win, but it got my work before my Kensington editor. It came out in '93 and I've sold over 30 since. With numerous rejections in between.
Right now, I'm writing books I've wanted to write for three years, Romantic Thrillers. Think Peacemaker or Chain Reaction with a little more romance in them. Lots of action and danger. After writing books in 5 sub genres of romance, (I get bored easily) this new one is the chance for me to use all this military knowledge I've stored up for years. I've fired weapons, rappelled, ridden in an Armored Personnel Carrier, and did some Scuba diving in the East China Sea. It hasn't been boring, and because I write, it never will be.
Now that my Sergeant Major husband is retired, and my sons are grown and towering over their mother, we get to stay in one place.
How average. I love it. When I feel the itch to move every 3 years, I just redecorate.
Well, its time for me to get back to work. Thanks for visiting. Take a look around the site, drop me a note, even read the first chapter of a new novel, if you like. It's out there for you, the reader. I wouldn't be loving my job if you weren't
While sneaking on board a cruise ship to steal but evidence being used to blackmails a friend, the heroine is chased and shot at before she leaps into the ocean. Being saved by a dolphin, she's then trapped in a nasty storm and she losses consciousness.
The hero is baffled when he drags the woman's body out of the waves but deep inside he feels a lasting connection with the strange woman. He spends every second he can by her side, nursing her back to health and praying for her to live. When the fever finally breaks, he comes to realize that she is the most beautiful woman he's ever laid eyes on but she's also obviously not right in the head what with her strange babblings and even stranger manner of speech. Plus she is beyond like any female he's ever encountered before. She's got a razor sharp tongue and is brutally honest with the way she sees him and his world but when she's in a temper she is like a fiery goddess and he can't help but be drawn to her.
The heroine first thinks the sexy caption and his crew are playing pirates but when they are attacked and she witnesses the death and pain around her first hand, she's horrified to realize that she's traveled back in time. It's then that she finally breaks and exposes the fragile and soft side of her and it's also when the hero finally succumbs to the heroine seductions. They start a heavy and passionate love affair, her not expecting anything out of it but sex but also knowing she's cares deeply for the man and will do anything for him. She does in turn save him during the battles and such and is like a ferocious tiger when in comes to protecting him. The hero however is seriously guilty over what he believes to be compromising a lady's honor. He asks her to marry him but she declines. He keeps at it until she relents and expresses her fear over trapping him in a marriage that he may not want considering she is so far from a 'good wife'.
I really loved this book despite the painful 90's writing style and phrases the heroine spews constantly. I did think that all her snarky and sassy mannerisms were charming for the most part though she did at times annoy the hell out of me. Mainly it was her dismissive and judgmental attitude towards the hero and what she considers savage injustices. Even after she realizes she was indeed in a historic time period, she still vocally opposed the hero's decisions and inserted herself into every single conflict and conversation. But, I did however feel she redeems herself with the fact she was obviously capable of handling her own on the ship and intelligent enough to help the hero out with his quest. The hero was just enrapture with the heroine and was so obviously wrapped around her little finger. He grew frustrated with her at times, but who wouldn't? Though he was always quick to make amends and they never really were at odds at anytime of the book. The pull between them was just too strong and from the start to the finish they were together. I did feel torn between rating this a 4 star or going for a 5 star but finally settled on the higher rating because i don't think i would hesitate to read this again in the future. It seems like it will be a go to read on a rainy weekend.
This is a time travel romance where her life is in danger and to try and escape goes on a Bahama bound cruise. Even on this cruise she is not save and ends up going overboard into a wall of mist that sends her back in time. He is an 18th century buccaneer and rescues her from the ocean. He believes her to be an heiress last at sea.
This is the best terrible romance I've ever read. Just barely coherent enough to have a (completely absurd) plot, which is carried by a Mary sue who finds time to be a fainting damsel for a female protagonist, and a dolphin named Raymond. Whenever I need a laugh, I can count on this book to lift my mood.
I read this as a teenager years ago and remembered it to be so rich and vivid and enthralling. This go around it felt.... less than. It felt less than that. I still liked it,...
If you like time travel romances, pirates, ships and the like, this one is worth a read.
I re-read this as my goal to review my old reads. I really enjoyed the historical world building of this book. I don't know a lot about American history but it feels accurate enough and was interesting. I liked that even when Tess was dressed in the times, her attitude clearly showed she was a modern woman. I liked her connection with Dane, and the idea of traveling through time to meet your soulmate. There was a bigger plot around the American military and Dane's personal vendetta against his sister's torturer. I found it a pretty enjoyable read.
I like the story very much and the characters. I very much loved Tess's character and the dolphin who rescued her but had sent her to the past and was saved by our hero. I enjoy reading both of their POV's I really like how the two of them are perfect for each other and the crew members on the ship were very likable to and the fact that their chef was a Japanese and the crews reaction to that were just funny. All in all I like the story very much!
This is truly an excellent book. The male lead believed her story at precisely the right time and the female lead was spunky and smart. She knew a great deal about America's defenses as they would come to be and as someone who knows little of that I found it admirable. This was a terrific example of time travel romance.
Not the best time travel book I've ever read. The author needed to stay with one character's pov through a chapter, the jumping around was really difficult to read. There are better romances out there, especially about pirates.
Realistic enough for a time travel book, got some apt observations. The pirate captain is super cute. Good story, well written with enjoyable plot twists, my mom LOVED this book
