A collection of mostly short stories with wandering gods. I wish some were longer, especially the one with the wind god and the small child. The one with the bird who brings spring and the hunter is also great. The snake was so cute and funny. I mist admit that the title story was my least favorite out of all of them.
Despite what the title says, this is actually a collection of several stories and I am not kind to any of them. In the first story the dragon already irritated me, among other things. That thing doesn't look like a dragon (until later on), and I saw a lot of dragons, and it is a bit.... icky to have Mauri be the village's fuck boy because there are no women. And not only that but Mauri looks awfully young. I hope he is at least supposed to in his mid-teens. Furthermore, if the dragon only wanted someone to talk to, why insist originally on a girl? And did we need to have a rape attempt by the villagers? The whole story with the kidnapped and killed girls could not be revealed more easily? And how are the both able to have a dragon child? I hope the author thought of the god/dragon being pregnant because Mauri sure as hell would not be able to be pregnant. And after that their story was over… at not even a quarter of the book so why their story is the title story is beyond me. After this it became apparent that this is an anthology of stories and it switched to a love between a high school student (much taller than Mauri, which makes the Mauri thing even weirder) and a rain god. And apparently it was love at first sight between the two when the boy Matsuri was still a small child. Creepy. The god was an adult. And apparently Matsuri was cornered by wolves. Is this a translation error or is this supposed to be a fantasy world? Because Japan has no wolves anymore. And how would Matsuri know that Shiramine loves him? That dumb snake never said anything. Back then I doubted that I would remember any of this without looking at my notes when I write my review and except for the first story and some images I was right. These short stories just aren't that memorable. The images only come from the last story that was more memorable because this time the god is the child... and apparently the Japanese hunter is part... well, considered that he is called Gene, probably part British or US, the other options are too unlikely. But I still gave up as these constant misunderstanding danger stories are boring and the maturity difference is too creepy for me.
The first story was a bit too short for my liking because it's the title story. Mauri's intended to be a sacrifice to a God who spares him out of pity after he hears the reason for Mauri being a sacrifice and after that they start living together.
The second one is about a God of Rain who falls in love with a boy, Matsuri, and stays with him while he grows up. While Matsuri can see and talk to Gods, he has no idea that Shiramine is human because of their mutual but unbeknown feelings for each other.
Story number three is the longest one and my second favourite. Basically it's about a God in the form of a bird that brings spring to the regions it travels to. When the God turns into a human, he keeps his ability to sing and is captured by a theatre.
The last one is my favourite even though it is the saddest of them all. A little boy named Kio is the only one to survive after his village is raided by bandits. All alone he stumbles around in the woods when Kitsune and his God lover, Orfeu, who are living with nomads, find him and take him in.
