Berkley Street #9

Amherst Burial Ground

Rate this book
Amherst, New Hampshire, is known for its lush landscapes and pastoral beauty. It’s also the home of The One, a hideous little ghost boy named Samson, who’s been dead for centuries and feeds off the life force of the living. His smile is as alluring as he is deadly. Now, Shane Ryan must destroy him before Samson grants the Watchers eternal life. Shane is weary, depressed and in love with a ghost. If that’s not bad enough, his depression is leading him into reckless behavior on his job. He’s no longer a ghostbuster as much as a killing machine. He’s obsessed with annihilating the Watchers and their properties, one ghost and one human at a time. But his personal life is on a collision course with his professional mission and his friends are worried. When Shane finally finds Samson, the encounter is cataclysmic. With demonic glee, the lethal specter relishes the thought of killing the ghost hunter. Fueled by hate, Shane’s obsession to destroy the Watchers and Samson drives him to the edge. As events spiral into a dark place, Shane realizes their end could also be his own…

Ron Ripley

Ron Ripley is a husband and father surviving in New England, a place which seems to be getting colder every day. He grew up across from a disturbingly large cemetery where he managed to scare himself every night before going to bed. Mostly because of the red lights that people put in front of the headstones. Those things are just plain creepy to a kid.

Ron enjoys writing horror, military history and driving through the small towns of New England with his family, collecting books and giving impromptu lectures on military history to his family, who enjoy ignoring him during those dreadful times.

Mindless violence marks the end of a dreary series. The ghosts seem more like McGuffins than meaningful to the plot.

"""BOOK 1 (BERKLEY STREET) - I really enjoyed this book. I read this book after meeting Shane in the MOVING IN series. This has been a very good series so far.
BOOK 2 (THE LIGHTHOUSE) - This has to be my favorite Ron Ripley story so far. The characters are all very well done.
BOOK 3 (THE TOWN OF GRISWOLD) - A nice book. The characters continue to be well done. So far I am enjoying this series more than the MOVING IN series....and I also enjoyed that series.
BOOK 4 (SANFORD HOSPITAL) - This is probably my second favorite book in this series. I really like the addition of one character in particular. The way this book ended makes me wonder if that person will be a returning character in the series....
BOOK 5 (KURKOW PRISON) - This book was a good read too. It was not one of the better books in the series. I may have to read it again because I feel like there are some things that I missed the first time.
BOOK 6 (LAKE NUTAQ) - This one was also good. More elements to the story appear to be being added. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
BOOK 7 (SLATER MILL) Still a good book. I am continuing the series. I do still feel like I need a reread to find things that I missed.
BOOK 8 (BORGIN KEEP) Same review. Still a good book. I am continuing the series. I do still feel like I need a reread to find things that I missed.
BOOK 9 (AMHERST BURIAL GROUND)Same review. Still a good book. I am continuing the series. I do still feel like I need a reread to find things that I missed. There will be a reread to make notes and see."

My temptation to say that this is my favourite of the series was very close. Having thought about it though, I don't think that I would have enjoyed this as much without having read the series. I know the characters, the battles they have been through and the final hardships to come and that is what makes this series so special.

I was thinking of a one word description for this story. Dark? Not really, it doesn't do it justice. Bleak? Nope, anybody who has read 'The Last Man' by Mary Shelley knows a bleak story when they read it. Then it dawned on me, Cold. This book is stone cold in every sense of the word. Leave your emotions at the door and have your humanity stripped away.

Without being in danger of spoilers, this has by far one of the most disturbingly interesting adversaries that I have been fortunate enough to come across. I love everything about the whole make up (especially in the back story bonus chapters). I honestly thought that my eyes were going to cease with the speed I was plowing through this one.

The Watchers in themselves are a nasty piece of work, the more so because they are human, they cause death, suffering and mayhem at every turn, and everything comes to a wonderful conclusion in style. I was selfishly not wanting this to end, hoping that there would be 'just one more' occurrence to keep the pages turning.

This rates as one of my favourite ever reads. If you love horror give this series a try.

Well, this is the end of this series and, quite frankly, it didn't end the way I thought it might. It was a bittersweet conclusion to a series that was both compelling and gruesome. The evil entity in "Amherst Burial Ground" is The One - the "Chief Spook" that The Watchers have been seeking for decades. Shane Ryan must face this black spirit alone (with the exception of Courtney) as his living sidekicks recover from various injuries. Whether Shane survives this encounter or not I shall leave to the readers to discover, so no spoilers here.
Ron Ripley is a master at delivering frights and this book does not disappoint. There are hired killers, both living and dead, and ancient evils that arise to spread death and destruction to all who enter the realm of The One. Not only must Shane and Company fight ghosts, they must also face assassins and deal with members of The Watchers who try to change allegiances, or are they?
I loved this series and will miss not having future episodes to look forward to. It ended about as well as it could have, I suppose, but I felt as though Shane was a friend of mine and now he is going away. I would recommend this book and series to anyone who enjoys horror and the supernatural. Five big stars.

This book is the end of Berkeley Street Series and leaves me missing more tales of Shane and the ghosts he lived with and the living friends that helped him battle and eliminate the evil ghosts. How it all was to end was a big question for me and author Ron Ripley’s end was the best with a twist that totally surprised me. I’m not a ghost story lover, but I read Sanford Hospital book 4 and wanted more of Shane and this incredible storyline. It was back to book 1 where I learned about Shane’s intriguing past and I was hooked. Read the rest in order, finished one and was beginning the next. Any reader, not just ghost story lovers, will thoroughly enjoy all the characters, living and dead, and the original, imaginative storylines Ripley creates. There’s suspense leading to scary, evil action that grabs and doesn’t let go book after book. Each book is different with new side stories, but same wonderful characters, all keeping the pages turning to see conflicts resolved. I loved Shane’s character instantly and best friend, Frank’s character was a perfect fit for Shane. True love makes the Courtney storyline ending with tear filled eyes for me. This series is just too great to miss, it’s a must read and you’ll love it. Applause to Ron Ripley, a new favorite author for me!

Samson, has an angelic face and an alluring smile. Shane Ryan is tough, battered, and missing bits and parts of his body. Looks are deceiving.

Samson, a young ghost, has an angelic face and an alluring smile. Shane Ryan is tough, battered, and missing bits and parts of his body. One is evil, and one is good. Looks are deceiving.
Shane Ryan's personal issues are troubling his soul, but he is determined to save the world from the Watchers, and those who follow them. Especially Samson, who is determined to give them eternal life. It is a struggle between good and bad, good versus evil, life versus death. But will our exhausted hero have it in him to triumph? This may be the final book in the series, but we do see Shane in passing in Ron's other books. Shane is just too good a character to shelf to gather dust.

I can't believe the series is over! While Berkley Street is the only series I've read by this author (so far), I'm hopeful we'll get to see more of Shane and his ghosts in the future -- even if they're secondary characters in a different series.

While the series became progressively more violent, I think it ended in the only way it could have. And I must say, I really enjoyed the twist with this one! I hate spoilers, so I won't give it away...

Amherst Burial Ground had me on the edge of my seat several times, ready to cry at one point closer to the end, and clinging to the hope that even though this was a horror series, there would still be a happy ending of some sort for the characters.

Very well done, Mr. Ripley! Now I'm off to figure out which of your series I'll dive into next!

Wow wow

Can I just say this series was way more than I expected?

This final installment of the Berkley Street series was superb. It tied everything up nicely, was exceedingly gruesome and had the most fascinating yet sh!t faced eating little ghost child.

I love how this ended and Samson was a right little twerp. Seeing everything with the Watchers fall apart, and Shane's character arc blossom into something so potentially wholesome.

Although the series as a whole is pretty short, you get so much out of it and the creepy factor is cranked higher and higher with each installment. Definently a series I won't be forgetting about any time soon and I highly recommend to all my spooky lovers!

A powerful ending

"Wow" & "damn" are the first two words that come to mind for this last installment of The Berkley Street series. Such a long journey we had with Shane, Frank, Marie, & the inhabitants of number 125! I'm glad it ended with our main cast still breathing. I will also always wonder if The Watchers were looking in the wrong direction for The One. With Shane's ability to draw upon the energies of "good" ghosts to defeat "bad", perhaps there was more there than that diabolical organization chose to see.
Goodbye, my friends. You will be missed.

Fantastic entry for the last one in the series! Loved it. This is a great series and I enjoyed every single one of the books. I don't read the "Bonus" chapters - don't find them very interesting or needed.

I've tried a couple other series by Mr. Ripley, but nothing was as engaging and interesting as this series. However, I will continue to look for something that grabs me as this series did, perhaps another writer in the "Scare" group.

Great job Mr. Ripley! This was a fabulous ride from beginning to end!

I'm a going to miss Shane Ryan and Frank Benedict

A bittersweet ending to a great series! I thoroughly enjoyed the complexity of our main character. This probably had the highest body count of all the books. Some pretty good death scenes and multiple memorable antagonists. That Clair is cold blooded! Samson is a devilish little boy with the power of persuasion. He is a great villain and really was one of the best parts of the book. Love that Shane kind of gets some sort of content ending. Gonna miss the adventures of Shane and the gang.

Not a bad finish, not a great finish. The boy ghost was super annoying and like all books this one has a lot more gore than horror. The meaning of the relationship of Shane to the "One" was not fully fleshed out and the Watchers turned out to be simply incompetent nincompoops. Just like book 8 I found this ending very anticlimactic and an overall let down. Shane's character was somewhat redeemed at the end but if I had not pre-purchased the entire series honestly would have stopped a long time ago.

I honestly though that Shane and Frank would die at the end of this book, I was ready for it and extremely pleased when they didn’t die.
The finale was amazing, I’ve read so many anticlimactic books but this one didn’t disappoint. The end of the series was great, the characters as they have been throughout the series were interesting and believable and I thoroughly enjoyed the series and can’t wait to read more for Ron Ripley’s books.

Sad to say this is the end of these familiar ghosts, Shane and Frank. It has been well developed with believable, likeable and some interesting. You will feel the Suspense. The bonus scenesreally add to the story. I am going to miss Carl, Eloise, and all the ghosts of Berkley Street. If you want to add a little suspense to your life you need this book. Thom Bowers is such a powerful narrator he adds life to the characters that will keep you on gaurd. I highly recommend this book!

This is one of the few fictional book series I've read from start to finish. Usually it gets to repetitive for me and I get bored. That repetition definitely started here midway through the series but Ripley spiced things up and threw in enough curve balls to keep me interested. I admire his ability to kill off likeable characters. And I'm impressed with the character progression of Shane especially through the series.

This is a 4.5 star explosive read.

An exciting, all-in, arse kicking finale showdown between The One, The Watchers and Shane and his motley crew. A long, long journey with a remarkably bittersweet ending. Yet I still find myself wanting to know a little more. I would love a couple of "prequels" that show Shane's time as a child in his haunted house and one of Shane's time as an active Marine and how his ability to see ghosts affected him on the battlefront. A stellar paranormal series.

I was devastated when I received the email that this would be the last book in Shane's story. I have grown to love Shane, Frank, Carl, and everyone else on Berkeley Street. As sad as I am to see the series end, this book could not have done a better job of closing the story. I just hope new series is in the works.

Awesome

Shane an ex Gunnery Sergeant and Frank an ex Monk and ex Special Forces are ghost hunters.
Shane's house is full of the dead that traumatized him as a child except for Carl. A dead butler that speaks German.
Please join Shane and Frank as they both try to kill the dead and dismantle the group The Watchers who feed the dead regularly. You will not be disappointed!

Worthy finale to the series. I absolutely loved the added chapters on Samson and what happened to create him. It was maybe better than the rest of the book in my opinion. Overall I really liked the series. It was interesting and was not easy on the characters in any way. Really glad I picked it up.

Epic!

Wow, that was a grand finale!!
The book had a couple really good plot twists.
The bonus scenes in the end were great too.
It was an epic book.
The entire series was epic. The books are so good. A couple of the books were even spooky. I loved it - read the entire 9 books in less than a month, that’s how good it was.

Perhaps the ending wasn't what I'd expected and this last in the series felt a little rushed. But overall, this series was great - real page-turning excitement and interest throughout. The sad bit is if I've finished and Shane is now done with as a character. I will be reading more of Mr Ripley in due course.

Shane Ryan Finds Family Connections

The Berkley Street series is perfect binge-reading for the horror fan. Ron Ripley is a master story craftsman, his characters fine-tuned, the tension sustained and torqued to eleven. Shane Ryan is an unforgettable character, and the final ghost he faces in this book is a dominating nemesis.

Finding "The One" has been the task of the Watchers for years. Getting closer, Shane Ryan is now more of a threat than he was before - one that is destroying the hard work that they have been doing for decades.

Shane is determined to find "The One" and destroy him, ending the Watchers game once and for all - and hopefully keep more people from dying in the process.

Another terrific read

Characters and story lines expertly woven together, it'll have you on the edge of your seat. Love the character of Shane and all his friends and fear this may well be the last we hear from him so fittingly it's a rollercoaster ride for the last book.
